Samples from the original .umx files shipped with the GOG.com GOTY release were extracted using OpenMPT then rearranged, mixed, and mastered in Studio One. A few minor arrangement and sample changes have been made to modernize it and correct some audio imperfections such as clicks and clipping.
Deus Ex is unique for being one of the first games to properly implement a simple (but extremely effective) dynamic music system. The way this is achieved is by splitting every major area theme into multiple "subtracks" - ambient, conversation, combat, etc. - which are queued automatically depending on the player's actions. This, however, poses a big problem for a project such as this one - the soundtrack is structured in a way that augments (pun not intended) the gameplay first, and my remaster tries to be like a regular album for listening to from start to finish. Therefore, I decided to include every single subtrack (even unused ones), meaning I had to come up with smooth transitions between them. This means that the subtrack ordering is inconsistent, however, as it was a conscious decision to order them based on how much they made sense musically as opposed to the order you may hear in-game.
This release includes some music unused in the game (tcrf.net/Deus_Ex/Unused_Audio...
- UNATCO - conversation track extended intro
- Majestic 12 Labs - alternate ambient track (used as the conversation track in the PS2 port)
- Opponent Within - unused outro
- Naval Base & Graveyard - unused ambient track for the Lower East Side Cemetery level which is left silent; combined with Naval Base tracks since they come from the same file
- The Nothing - unused conversation track
- Area 51 - unused outro (most likely a leftover from before the final Moon level was cut)
This release has different credits from the official soundtrack release:
- Area 51 is composed by Bryan Rudge who, according to Alexander Brandon, asked not to be credited (source: • Interview w/Alexander ... )
- NYC Bar, Hong Kong Club 1, Hong Kong Club 2, Paris Club 1, and Paris Club 2 were composed by Reeves Gabrels; they were not included in the official release
This is the first release on my new channel, "misadventures in ludomusicology", focused purely on video game music. I made this decision to keep my main channel focused on original music and occasional music-related content. It just seemed fitting for my all-time favorite game to be the first remaster there (not to mention it's the most complex and time-consuming so far!)

"Excuse that I have forgotten your brother Paul Denton and the infinite power of nano-augmentation."
This is the music they should’ve used for revision
pretty sure it's possible to mod it in, though i have no idea how you'd handle high fidelity audio and clean transitions
Yep, this is going into my music playlist
Why are you locked in the bathroom ?
Mine to.
ah jc denton in the fresh
And into mine *Lip smack
I read it with your voice, jc
A master piece of a game forgotten in time and now betrayed by Embracer and Eidos.
A sad ending for such a great game series.
yet another great franchise ruined by corporate greed...
@@misadventuresinludomusicology What a shame. It was a great franchise... *lip smack™* What a rotten way to die.
damn :(
this game happened only because they had no expectations. now enjoy corpos destroy everything. besides that i feel like we will get some really great games soon from some small studios which are going to be classics in the future just like this game.
@@jovik2671 pretty much why i stopped paying attention to aaa releases since mankind divided. indie studios and mods are now the way to go if you're looking for actually memorable gaming experiences free from the atrocities of mass produced entertainment.
Thank you for making these available as flac files. This is a refreshing way to listen to a classic score. I appreciate that you gave proper credit to the composers. A lot of people just attribute the Deus Ex score to Alexander Brandon and while he did a lot of the heavy lifting, van den Bos et all really added a lot to making the music so dynamic and engaging. I wasn't even aware there was a fifth contributor until now.
Very good remaster. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that I can't select a specific variation (ambient/action/conversation) of each theme.
Actually so fucking good
I'm listening to this remastered classic soundtrack, but every once in a while I hear something new and dance-able. Great work.
this is incredible. so many of the songs come to life hearing them this clearly. the drums and bass have so much more punch in this mix, too. hearing "lebedev's airfield" blew me away. also, the way you transitioned the tracks is so creative, the timing speeding up leading into the combat tracks is a great touch. my only gripes are with "chateau duclare" and "the illuminati", some of the synth instruments got pretty buried on those tracks, they could be tuned up a little. also the guitar instrument that comes in about a minute and ten seconds into nyc streets sounds sorta thin, it sounded punchier in the original song, and the synths in the opening of "unatco" sound sorta muffled, but i guess that might be how the sample sounds? either way, this is absolutely amazing and will probably be the main way i listen to the soundtrack from now on.
thanks. i always felt the guitar thing in nyc streets sounded a bit too overpowering so i deliberately made it more subtle. the beginning of unatco sounds muffled because i applied a lot of denoising since the original sample has some annoying high-pitched noise. i may have overdone it slightly, though, since now it just sounds like a low pass filter.
I need an extended version of 33:12 😖@@misadventuresinludomusicology
@@ShaYneHD maybe another time, i'm afraid remixes and extended versions are outside of this channel's scope
@@misadventuresinludomusicology I think you are very capable, by speeding some of these tracks up you gave them an entirely new tone and atmosphere, good job anyway (:
The extra definition really brings some of the combat tracks into a whole another level.
Love it. Great work, I'm instantly transported back to my favourite game.
Yeah, I could image Bluey's dad playing Deus Ex back in the day.
This really deserves a ton more listens/views. I've been blasting this remaster in the background at least a couple times a month since I first discovered it, and downloaded the FLACs too. Really dig the way all the tracks are combined together for each area. Amazing job!
A Nightdive remaster of DX1 that uses this soundtrack would be absolute perfection.
Thanks, I downloaded this remaster, now I can listen to it in stereo.
I just listened to the The Illuminati track, you deserve an OP bonus.
Hell Yeah man, nicely done! 🙌🌟💯
This is really great. The remastering, rearrangements, and sample changes are very tasteful. The song transitions and track list is thematic and engaging. Thank you for your efforts on this.
The transition into Alarming Gunfire was slick af
Master Peace! Grat Work - thanks!
Some of the transitions between are very, very Good!
Fantastic work with scurpulous attention to details. Thank you!
Phenomenal job, thanks!
This is REALLY good. Thank you.
I can tell you, I've looped this whole thing a few times at this point.
I love this game and this OST
some of the instruments for the unatco themes sound like they're underwater, other than that its pretty clean
After I listen to it, my hearing is augmented...
I'm not normally affected by ASMR but the spirit of the classic ost punching through in updated resounding high definition just about gets me there. Absolutely stunning work, thank you for this!
Amazing work, thanks!
Really well done on the mastering. Clean and precise. Just teh way we like it.
Been enjoying this, nice work!
You're Simon's? You think I can be bribed?
As someone who's just playing DX for the first time I feel pretty lucky being able to hear this music so clearly. Some of these tracks are so much better than I realised - A lot of the more subtle sounds I never noticed before really 'pop' in this. The Opening and basically all of the combat music sounds incredible
I just played it for the first time with the GMDX mod.
I'm not sure if that changes the audio quality but to me this soundtrack and the game sound the same.
But I don't have any high quality headphones or anything. I'm just listening with stereo speakers.
once you finish this game you will regret that it ended.
@@jovik2671 Yep I finished it really and felt sad and empty afterwards haha. It really sucked me in
@@wausjackbauer128 unfortunately only this game is capable of doing that hah
@@jovik2671 Nah BioShock Infinite did the same to me. Prey 2017 too.
I keep coming back to this playlist. This is amazing.
Man, this is soooooo goooood! Thank you!
Thank you! Love the in-game background
Excellent work !
Holy damn, this sounds so fresh I feel like I'm playing the game again for the first time. You really managed to highlight all sounds and instruments that made the original so great back in the days. They sound just like I remember them sounding, except that the original actually aged a bit in terms of sound quality (Still great tho - listening to it frequently). Good to see how much love the game is still getting.
Such a great work 👍
This is incredible, great job.
Versalife - Combat is so 🔥
Retained all the dynamics while infusing the source material with new sheen and making the overall sonic spectrum adhere to contemporary standards. This is really great work, man. Glad I stumbled upon this.
all i can say is stay tuned for more ;)
Będzie słuchane :)
what a vibe!
This sounds beautiful, there's a richness and depth that has been brought out and I love it
Piękne. Dzięki
My mystic is augmented.
I've listened to this whole thing four times now, I really am engrossed with the vibe this game's music gives off :p
12:28 😎❤
26:50 Your welcome
The Enemy Within Combat version goes hard at 43:46.
UNATCO! perfect song for a game
Absolutely love how you kept the Area 51 combat music’s bpm consistent throughout unlike how it is in both the PC and PS2 versions. And that transition from the unknown A51 theme to the combat one is absolutely scintillating. Thank you!
i instantly fell in love with the area 51 track after my first playthrough and the first thing i did after realizing i can just open the songs in openmpt was fix the bpm lol
@@misadventuresinludomusicology I am in complete agreement with you on that. First playthrough and I fell in love with the song as well, but it always bugged me that the combat music slowed down, it just takes away from the high intensity the song is supposed to represent. Listening to it with a consistent bpm gives it the justice it deserves
stuff like this is literal fuel for my ocd
The life this remaster breathes into the original songs is outstanding!
You are my buddy 🤝🖤
Love the sound and that you have actually video from the game. One of the better DX-Compilation and trust me, I know them all =)😉
my ears augmented
This is great, PLEASE could you take the more calm tracks from this and make a set from them.
there are already some great deus ex ambient mixes on youtube. my aim is to remaster the original soundtracks in full and stay as faithful as possible so such a mix would be outside of this channel's scope.
26:44 NSF found you and you make a run for it to escape their fire.
Holy crap the Versalife track is a banger
Since when is Paul working with the NSF? What made him pay attention to them? Did he meet Lebedev? Did Lebedev see Paul's parents get killed? Paul is playing with me-player, he embodies the secrets are lives quote.
I CAN NOT believe this game hasn't received a remake.
It's kinda a big game but still.
sadly revision is probably the closest we'll ever get
@@misadventuresinludomusicology say thanks to publishers and all others... many people know this game is one of the greatest but no studio has the time and no studio thinks that it will generate revenue just like re4 remake or anything close. same reason as to why there is no half-life series remakes, it won't generate huge revenues like their multiplayer bs. no one will even move a finger if the game isn't going to bring billions
@@jovik2671 i *really* hate to be that guy but
they just don't make 'em like they used to
One of the few video game soundtracks where all the different versions (combat, death, etc) of the songs is actually worth listening to -- outside of playing the game, I mean.
It's fantastic! Now if only there was a way to put these tracks back into the game, it'd be perfect for Revision.
i guess you could convert the tracks to ogg and use them in revision. flac might be possible with the openal driver.
I like the clarity you've given to those tracks, however some instruments are now completely mute. I can't say I dislike the overall production you used though, it sounds nice regardless.
This should have been in Revision!
I use this to concentrate while writing my novel. However, the only downside is that for some peculiar reason I end up playing Deus Ex.
Nice screenshots from the game. Why were the annoted timestamps removed from the video itself?
not a clue, youtube timestamps are weird
DUUUUUUUU DUD DU DU DU DU DUUUUUUUUU DU DUUUU DUUUU DUUUUUUUUU
So you're saying the soundtrack is augmented?
No Main Title- Conspiracy Version?
12:30 why are you locked in the bathroom ?
*lipsmack*
These soundtracks were augmented.
This sounds incredible. It would have been even better if you used the GOTY OST as the base, but it's still fantastic, regardless.
it's based on game files from gog (which is in fact the goty version). to my knowledge there aren't any differences between this and the original release.
A little too much compression on some tracks and elements getting lost, but overall a really good job!
Yooo
Обожаю эту игру, более 200 часов в стиме, а ведь до 19 года не знал о ней.
