- www.atlassian.com/agile/kanban Kanban is a work management system designed to help you visualize your work, limit work in progress (WIP), and maximize efficiency. It can often be a powerful tool for teams that want to improve transparency, communication, and alignment within their workplace.
In this video, we’ll give you background on how the kanban methodology was developed, what its core principles are, and how it could benefit your team.
We'll also show you how you can get started with kanban yourself.
We’ll bring you step-by-step through the process of creating and managing a kanban board, a project management tool that uses cards and columns to compose a visual "workflow." Then, we’ll cover how to fill that board with kanban cards, which are visual artifacts that represent different work items. Finally, we’ll show you how to set up work in progress limits to maximize your team’s efficiency.
By the end of this video, you should be equipped with all of the fundamentals you’ll need to start using kanban to improve your team’s work.

Didn't expect it to be so straightforward. The principles of Kanban and Agile have been around for decades, originating in Japanese manufacturing. It's honestly mind blowing that 'Agile' is sometimes considered this new revolutionary way of delivering a project when it's derived from Lean methodology. Only difference is Agile caters to streamlining a software development process rather than a manufacturing process. JIRA just visualizes a methodology and practice that has existed since Toyota first implemented these concepts in the 40's. Surprised no one thought of this before.
Honestly, I watched a lot of videos and this is the best and most classy explanation of Kanban. You did really well! Thank you.
This! Excellent explanation of a concept I’d never heard of one hour ago. It may be the solution to my organization woes
my man knows his stuff!
This is a golden textbook example of how an educational video in general and on Kanban specifically, should be made. Nice work! :)
We're glad it was helpful! 💙
1:43 (ish) "It's on the team to make kanban work for you" i.e. it's not a magical lantern you rub to make magical things happen. It's a tool that can be used effectively by certain-minded people. Good stuff right there.
The Kanban video series are truly amazing. The way the videos are directed, produced and also the main speaker are just superb!
For an absolute novice this was a brilliant explanation. Thank you
totally agree!
As a salesforce trainee, I found your video very descriptive and understandable. Thank you
You are an absolute teacher.... Nice to watch from you, thank you.
This really helped me grasp Kanban and the other videos are fantastic. I realize Agile is complex but this video and the other videos break it out into simple concepts to get our teams moving on their journey.
Wow! Thank you so much! You really seem to like Kanban because you explained it so well
This is the best video I found on Kanban.
I have worked in scrum team and was looking to learn what is Kanban. I went through lot of videos with similar information but this video explained it the best. Thank you
Great video! Well thought out and easy to grasp.
A very simple so easy to understand that you immediately relate it to tasks that you have initiated and completed and you didnt realise you did implement Kanban. Ofcourse the scale of this will differ from task to task. Thank you Max
The 3:55 - 4:08 part is a really, really good point.
Thank you for this video!
For an absolute beginner this was an excellent explanation. Thank you
You're most welcome! Good luck on your upcoming projects!
Just started using Trello and your video series was a great refresher for understanding Kanban. I'd read about it before, but never put it into action. Off to a running start now. Thanks!
Studied in Quality Control the concept of kanbans and did not understand it fully , looked to youtube and did not find any better explanation than this video. Thank you
One of the better videos about Kanban. I actually felt that i learned something, thanks!
Absolutely nailed this whole topic of Kanban boards. Your a natural teacher and I feel myself "Flowing" towards Trello 😁
Best explanaition I have found so far!! Awesome!

Really good explanation, eager to implement this to my day to day activities
Well done Max. Nice and comprehensive. I will use it for my folks
I really loved this video mainly because theory was demonstrated with practical examples..thanks..

great and easy video to understand kanban at first place.
Thank you 😊
You always benefit from the simplicity: kanban itself and the way it's presented
Fantastic! I love Atlassian!
Max, I am a fan! I’m totally brand new & I feel I’ve got the basic framework of Kanban. You have such an easy manner. I live the filming. Looking forward to seeing more! Wow. Onward & upward with FLOW!!
Thank you for this succinct, precise explanation of what Kanban is. 2 Thumbs way up and this ain't a Hollywood picture.
Indeed very helpful. love you. Thank you Sir.
Thanks for the detailed explanation !! Appreciated !!
Fabulous explanation through visualization!!!
i agree that it is best way to monitor progress on the project regularly with this kanban review data!
Thank you for simplifying this
He deserves to be in atlassian - thankyou
just to clarify lead time is not when you start working on a card to done. It is when the ticket arrives in your backlog to done... in Jira its the control chart and by choosing the right states you can either get lead time or cycle time....
Spectacular content! 🙌
This is the best damn video (from the production perspective) I have seen in a long time.
Watched kanban explanation video. Marked as done!
Ohh my god...Amazing, useful video...Very well presented 👍... What I understood about kanban from this video
1.Kanban is a really simple and useful system. But
2.No one in this world is capable of explaining it properly. Whenever they try to describe it they make it unnecessarily complex (exact opposite of the intent of kanban system 😂)
3.I looked about kanban in Google, Google images, other youtube videos etc...But the part that confused the most is about the words such as backlogs, WIP, etc...But after watching this video I am very clear about them and their purpose seems to be so revolutionary and its unbelievable usefulness...
4.Kanban is not just about manufacturing or production. It can be used in our daily life also.It increases productivity so effortlessly. 🎉
Kudos to the team ...Great work... 🎉❤️👍
Very clear explanation…great work.
Nice and simple explanation. Thanks a lot
Great video !clear and concise
Excellent explanation!! Thank you
wow! perfect!!!! loved it!!
Thank you Jared for the intro
it's uncanny!
Very informative video. I'm going to give this a try. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Have a great weekend.👍💡
Thank you for the information in my organization they introduce the kanban system but I think they never sold it properly now I understand. Thank you
Super clear! Thanks
Great job!
I m working at japan factory kanban is one how to manage our working system and time efficiently ❤
Great job. Thank you so much.
Nicely done! Love the creativity in the video
This video is very self explanatory. Very straight to the point and easy to understand. Please can you do another video on Scrum?
Awesome! Lov it!
the best teacher there is
This is good intro to Kanban boards, it has detailed explanation and examples! I hope publish one for scrum boards as well.
Funny you should mention that, we have a whole series on Scrum as well. :D czcams.com/play/PLaD4FvsFdarT0B2yi9byhKWYX1YmrkrpC.html
I’m getting some solid American Airlines preflight video vibes
Thank you!
great explanation really thank you
wow! you are good in it.
Brillient explanation :)
Well done!
Amazing work, guys (also, amazing offices!!!!)
Great video !!!
Thanks a lot!
thanks a million..
U can sell icecream to Eskimo i swear, what a presentation for a white board
Very good video thank you for that! On small comment, at the end of the video, "lead time" is mentioned to describe the time from taking the work till delivering it to the customer. For me, it is more "cycle time". Lead time would be more the time from customer request to the time where the customer get what he requested.
Perfect!!.
Excellent video🔥.
I loved this video. I use Kanban but it is good to re-think the basics sometimes
May I ask a question... On your physical - office space boards, what type of sticky notes do you use? They look different to most Post It notes I've seen.
I wish I had watched this video several months ago when I first started to use Trello
No question, how Kanban should be explained!
Installed Trello. It's pretty good.
Amazing video
great video keep it up
all the best words re content and how things explained. The shaking camera and running circles around the office to make it more "live" is a bit questionable though.
This was most helpful
WIP work in progress limit🤯
Love the video. Very clear and well-paced. I do think you should adjust or add onto the concept of lead time and compare and contrast it to cycle time. Maybe that's in the future installments.
verry helpful !
For accessibility, can we have a reduce motion button on this video?
great.
Good video.
What do you mean by bandwidth? thanks for this video.
I'm thinking about starting Kanban Records
With Jira there is a WIP limit per column, other than aligning column WIP limit to the number of people on your team is there a way to apply a WIP limit based on a users in a Role like say Developer?
great video
Thanks for watching.
why is the camera so shaky all the time?
Ok that's just a team to-do list in another more visual format.
1:23 - Starts here
Looks like a building I have been in on 10th Ave in San Diego.
ya man!
very nice video
Is kanban a job title or what job titles mostly use kanban ?
The visual signal I'm getting motion sickness from the vibration of the whole damn video!
Just realised I've been doing a scuffed version of this with several columns of jobs in an word table
If you want to skip the fluffy bla bla bla intro, go directly to 1:52 for an overview of the Kanban concept and 3:15 for the beginning of the more detailed run-through.
