They're not hard to understand, but still it's good to know what you're in for if you decide to go exploring. #huddersfield #publicrightofway #publicfootpath
Great video Rob. Great to get an Australian perspective on this wonderful aspect of our heritage in the UK. Peak and Northern Footpaths Society has been protecting pubic rights of way since 1894. We monitor the rights of way and also funding improvements to them.
Thanks! Really appreciate the feedback. While there I became somewhat obsessed with public rights of way and explored as many as I could. We don't have these here. I'm returning to the UK and can't wait to resume exploring them. I'll be living in Huddersfield.
Wow,great memories of castle hill.I come from a family of 11.Because money was tight growing up in the 1970s,We as a family went there regularly to run around and play for nowt.I can still see castle hill from certain places in the town of Mirfield.Great memories.
Hi Rob. Very much enjoyed this interesting and fun video. I live in the eastern US, and have hiked all of my adult life. However, I did enjoy the idea of walking like you did even when I was young (
By folks used to have a Oast House in Kent, the fields next to the property had a right of way diagonally across them. Every year they were ploughed and sown with corn, every year the footpath would re-emerge created by numerous un-seen walkers maintaining these precious rights. I love foot-paths, I am glad you had a good experience Rob.
In my 40+ years as a Long Distance Hiker, most farmers would not object to you walking along the edge of a field to avoid directly going through a growing crop field even though we have the Right to walk across the field on the Footpath. I even know of some UK Footpaths that cross a bombing range and Military Training Areas. The Law differs slightly in Scotland where you have the automatic right to walk anywhere (EXCEPT the Crown Estates ie Balmoral Castle) I have already completed two Pennine Way Hikes(N to S + S to N) and two Coast to Coast hikes, W 2 E and E 2 W, Plus Lands End to John OGroats and John OGroats to Lands End and finally a Clockwise Circumnavigation of the GB Coastline. Tony the retired Hiker
Brilliant walk Rob very different country from the countryside around Brisbane l am a Brit living in France but am from Leeds in Yorkshire about 25kilometres from the village of Farnley.
@@walkaboutwithrob Hi Rob l live just outside Paris but l have some Australian friends who live in Caboolture hope someday You will do a video walk around Caboolture.
No. Footpaths can become neglected and overgrown, or not have gates and stiles where they should be. But a Public Footpath remains a legal Right of Way unless the area's Highways Authority goes through a legal process of removing it from their Definitive Map, which is a drawn out process that doesn't often happen. So the fact that you can't use a path decause it is blocked in some way does not mean that the Right of Way has legally been lost.
@@peterwalsh520 yes, our areas council are dong a decent job keeping up the footpath fr the Cleveland way as it passes through there district and have always helped resolve any issues.

The north of England is so different from everywhere, it took some getting used to. Now I really miss it! Where in France are you?

While you are walking these public footpaths you could do some geocaching
great informative video mate, always been interested in how they work
@Sem thanks for watching!
They are blackberry bushes, full of fruit in autumn 😊
Very interesting and informative walk!
@Julie Schipplock thanks! Had a great time making this one.
Glad you got to enjoy a beer! 😊🍺
Always such beautiful country landscapes in the UK
Some foot paths cut right across farm yards. Also if the paths fall into disrepair, and people not using them, they can revert back to private land

It's not necessarily the wildlife is clumsy. In the 1970's they didn't have Darth Vader teaching them how to cross the road.
@Lisa Rogers an entertaining yet thoroughly perplexing comment
