Just watching this made me released how rich and abundant my country was and how we were robbed multiple times by the intruders just because we were more hospitable, welcoming and way far ahead of any other world cultures at that period. Seeing the sheer abundance of produce and flowers, the architecture, engineering and manpower in the boats and the quality and quantity of food being prepared for astronomical crowd and the different forms of martial artworks made me realize that we are a dynamic society which was looted from becoming a superpower. I hope we all share our love for our country and hope the earlier years of prosperity and hospitality make our country great again 🥺❣❤🔥
Yes
Especially these different types of martial arts all around the country was stopped by British
100% true Very nicely taken
😂😂this host probably read this and said 'he's talking about me and my grandpa'. But this is true. India has always been welcoming and generous. And its time that it became the center of the world again just like before these looters invaded and pilaged the country.
Travancore is an exception. Fought back and defeated the Dutch. Foiled the British by hiding away billions. 😅
I am watching this beautiful video from the USA. I am amazed at the sheer beauty of Kerala, its rich culture and traditions, and the large-heartedness of all Indians. As I write this, tears are rolling down my face as I miss my dear friend Manu, who was from Kerala and we lost him in the Covid pandemic. He shared so many beautiful stories about his homeland and I wanted to visit Kerala once in my lifetime. Thank you so much for letting me experience Kerala. Wishing you all a prosperous life and the will to keep the traditions alive !

Gary just broke into every Malayali's heart with this stupendously heartwarming and intricate look into Onam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thanks a ton!
I had a chapter about Onam in my Class 4th hindi textbook which explained about Raja Mahabali and boat races and ever since then I've been so interested in Onam, I was born in Delhi and have not yet been to South India yet, But I truly truly wish that Vishnu ji will allow me to be part of this celebration of his great devotee one day! I knew i recognised him from somewhere
I love India 🇮🇳 what a country, so many cultures, vibrant festivals, down to earth its people, and the greatest hospitality you could ever dream of, religion and its tolerance at the core of any indian i have met during entire my life.
All the colonisers misused the down to earth welcoming nature of Indians especially Kerala and turned them to their slaves and looted our country
I'm sure over half the audience for this video will be Indian because most of our cultures are so diverse that we don't even know what the neighboring states do for their traditions and festivals. Always an amazing sight to watch such documentaries.
exactly...forget nearby states, everything varies with districts too...

It’s not just a Hindu festival it’s a festival of Keralites aka mallus in general
People from all faiths celebrates Onam in some form
@@anoopkl4u Onam is a Hindu festival celebrated by everyone (Christianity or Islam were not even born during mahabalis time was it?). Same as Christmas is a Christian festival celebrated by everyone too.

I have been a great fan of Gary ever since I started watching Masterchef Australia and I’m so happy to see him presenting my happy place, Kerala in such a magnificent way. A big thank you to the team for taking time to study the Onam festival before the shoot, you have done a great job in covering the different traditions and celebrations associated with the festival. Very colourful and vibrant visual feast ….I’m watching this video in the UK, but the video did take me back to my home, Kerala, my happiest place. Hats off to the host and all the team members behind the camera for doing such a lovely interactive video about Onam, one of the mega festivals of India❤❤❤
Oh.. now I know why I felt Gary looks familiar. 😀I used to watch MasterChef Australia.
Such a visual feast, well researched and well presented. Gary was absolutely magnificient. Thanks for being our guest for Onam...please do keep coming back
This is the only foreign video perfectly utilised the real Kerala musical instruments and music tradition I have seen so far. The music 34:19 is pure bliss when you listen along the narrative, especially the Tabala and the Veena. Kudos to the team❤❤❤❤❤
May Guruvayurappan Keep the state of Kerala and indeed, Bharatha Varsha supremely blessed like this. What a splendid video, Thanks National Geographic.
Everything is on grand scale..tells how much richer India would have been in 9th and 10th Centuries.
Beautifully captured and narrated. Having visited Kerala many times and coming from North India (and now living in US), I can say Kerala has amazing food and fantastic greens
Let alone the foreigners, many of Indians don't get the chance to experience the beauty of India.

This is just one in a series by National Geographic, currently being aired on Disney Hotstar. Every single festival so far shown has been superbly shot and edited. Personally, I felt the Holi episode was the best visually. And...NG please have Gary as the host for all episodes.
Beautiful Beautiful Documentary. I have seen international chefs visiting India. They come for the taste but you have felt that Indian energy. Loved it.

Have been waiting eagerly for this one to be telecasted. Always a die hard fan of Gary Mehigan. A well researched and more importantly well presented episode. Proud to be a Keralite. Lots of luv to you Gary❤️
The amazing cinematography and explaining done by the narrator made me realise the richness of culture and traditional values that our country carries. Just like different colourful flowers together arranged in certain way looks more beautiful and varities of foods metaphorically shows India with it's very diverse poeple brought together and living peacfully in one place. I applause South Indian people for being more respectful and conserving towards our culture as compared to Northern people , which most of them imbrace western culture while feeling shame towards our own.
What a mouthwatering authentic Keralan banana leaf treat and a mind-blowing venture of Onam festivity showcasing the core of hinterland Kerala- the undoubtedly one and only God's Own Country.....well done Gary. Happy Onam from Malaysia❤🎉
Gary is so admirable! I am glad he's fond of India as much as India adores him. Lovely witty jolly fellow.
I'm from a small town in Maharashtra. I grew up here with many friends and neighbors from Kerala. And this episode feels so close to me.

National Geographic team and crew members are those genius people I always never miss … … any show by them
"Winning is just a byproduct" how wonderful. I'm so blessed to call this my motherland.
FYI for Europeans and Westerners watching, the kingdom of Travancore in the Southern part of Kerala, India, is the first South Asian kingdom to defeat a European kingdom. We defeated the Dutch and that put an end to their colonial endeavour in India forever. Our kings also hid more than 20 billion USD worth (in current value) of wealth from the British thieves
If you include the Ananthapadmanabha swamy temple treasures they saved much more
@@bharathsf That's the more than 20 billion USD, that I am referring to.
I got anti-bumps reading this
Wowwww❤ the vibrancy and the soothing colors of Onam 🥺🌼 keep him here as well😁😁
Just look at all the happy faces of Kerala people. It’s amazing to see that much enthusiasm and happiness on their faces. Thank you for showing my beloved country. Looking very forward to more.
Dear Gary,
It is astonishing to see you well versed in our Traditional Kitchen Works!
You don't fumble and tumble to do things. Whether it is rowing on our Chundan Vallam, wearing a Mundu, grinding a coconut, roasting the Green Gram for Paayasam or taking part in our Traditional Keralam Aattam and eating with bare bands, walking on bare foot, it seems that you are so sure to get acquainted very easily and fluently!!
We suspect that you underwent some South Indian Houseworks already!!
Greetings and Thanks for your Fantabulous coverage of all sections of our Great Onam Thiruvishaa!!
Very special mention to you dedicated videographer and his team for presenting a very impeccable piece of video recording and audio recording!! No letups, no muffled voices, no hazy frames!!
Congrats to National Geographic Bhaarath (India).
Well said!
Kerala is very special in terms of culture, Hinduism, classical music, classical dance music etc.. The land where Guru and Vayu themselves enshrined the idol of Krishna, the land of Shankaracharya, the land created by Parashurama.. its very special. And my state Andhra Pradesh has a special connection with Kerala. When the priest population was dwindling in Kerala , A group of priests from a village called Sarpavaram in Godavari district, were migrated to Kerala , to continue the tantric tradition of rituals in temples.. they are the namboodiris..
Interesting, can you elaborate more details about this
Incredible India 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

Man.. how rich is our culture. just love it with teary eyes ❤❤
That's a fantastic description dealing with almost every aspect of Onam. Thank you Garry for your love and passion for God's own country.
Onam is just limited to one state of India, Kerala. It has a history and tradition of thousand years. This is what it makes India so special.
The primary gods, Hari and Hara remains same, but the ways they are celebrated is so different and colourful.
You said it, " You don't want to be anywhere else in the world, Would you ? " Exactly my friend...I don't want to be anywhere else in the world. Onam brings all of us back into our homes.
Amazing Onam! Kerala's Gift to Bharat. Gary's presentation is beyond brilliant.
The way you were enjoying everything has lifted the mood of the festival milliion fold..love to see someone enjoying so much... feel proud to be a kerlalite

This is real Kerala storry
Our Mahabali is our pride, there was no organised religion in his time, bharat followed dharmic principles from hinduism, jainism, buddhism etc .Eventhough Mahabali was a shiva devotee ,he considered every citizen as equal and special.we call him maveli.tenth day of onam is his birthday(thiruvonam birth star).to welcome maveli onam is celebrated,it is believed that he will come to visit every home in kerala, will come to see his subjects.actually onam was celebrated for 28 days ,but now it is shortened to 10 days . Onam is a harvest festival too, sadya is a vegetarian dream.
Tahat why a Keralite Muslim told me that this festival is Islamic festival as well, as well as Hindu 😂😂 Kerala Hindus are such a fool. Sometimes I think they are beyond innocent. Will those Muslim Keralite worship shiva? Or just stop dictating Hindus to avoid saffron colour? Or stop the love jihad?
🤣haha another secular mallu spitting on his religion just for sake of secularism.
