It always warms my heart when Stephen interviews young guests. He never seems patronizing or creepy. He's like the best proud uncle who's genuinely curious about you. What a beautiful interview!
Thiiiis
Totally agree. I think it helps that he has kids. I know that's not necessarily a universally applicable statement, not everyone that has kids could do this as well as he does, but I still believe that is (one of the many reasons) why he is so good at it.
This is the second time I’ve seen him interview a young female singer who l previously knew nothing about and came away really liking the girl.
Great comments, Jillian Richardson!
whos uncle is he?
It's great to have an interview that respects Billie as an artist, not just patronizing her for her young age. Two superstars!
I agree, he spoke *with* he, instead of to her. It's strange that so many interviewer's don't seem to be able to do that.
Good point! He lets her be amazing because she is, not just because she’s young.
She has a really high EQ that's much more sophisticated than her age. He treated her with respect and the outcome is a nice conversation between two humans that really helps share who she is as an artist.
Totally! It's not like he was just pandering to her in order to gain a larger audience, or not even coming close to criticizing her because of the ridiculous backlash that seems to happen every day nowadays! Every "um" and egotistical musing was given the respect it deserved! All hail "artist" Billie!
it's a bit nit picky, but the whole thing about teenagers not waking up on time is just a toxic stereotype. as if everyone of a particular age or age range is identical. kinda ageist. same with capability -- there exists grandmaster chess players of literally 10 years old. it's all just about what people are interested in, focus on, and apply themselves to (oh, and "allowed" to do).
Props to Colbert for the 20+ minute uninterrupted interview.
Yes, so I didn't start watching the second part first for once 👀
@@krisfrederick5001 I hear you on that!
Well you should probably give props to Stephen's CBS overlords for that, they're probably the ones that deal with the content on this channel.
he's such a good interviewer
@@Mike__B they were talking about how good of an interviewer he is
My heart melts thinking of how deeply he explored her material as a journalist, to ensure her complexity as a young artist was highlighted. He spoke with her with sincere curiosity and joy. Lovely.
Perfectly said.
Billie, and Stephen for that matter are showing telltale signs of giftedness. High empathy, low ego, high intelligence, creativity, analytic minds, out of the beaten path thinking. I always like to hear them both.
Well said... thank you .
This paragraph applies to Stephen Colbert not to the Gucci clad teeniebopper
@@MB5rider81 wow, hateful much? Clearly, you don't know much about her, and your ageism is showing its ugly face.

I feel like Stephen went into to a little bit of a dad-mode with Billie, it was really sweet.

I got the impression he was asking for himself, actually. The things he was asking her about were situations he himself faces. His peers are all pros at it, like himself, but this was an opportunity for him to see how a total ingenue handled it.
Billie's Mom taught music, years back, to my son, when Billie was just a kid. Maggie you are very talented, and I KNOW where Billie's talent came from. That's all I gotta say!
That’s such a cool story that you and your son will have for the rest of your lives! Awesome!
@@anonymoususer6759 why so salty?
That's so amazing!
I love how honest Billie always seems like she's trying to be.
Also, best quote from Stephen: "It's tough being a mortal."
Yes, indeed. Her honesty opens doors into what practically all of music has to contribute to her own creative work with Finneas. She sees things whole. Examples: the Ilomilo video game reflecting a state of mind. The Bad Guy protagonist as a teen Tosca with a gangbanger beau.
Remember what she said, "You only know what you know." There is more to her than what is seen on TV.
I thought he said, "Its tough being immortal."
Referring to being everything for fans.
@@greenbluemonkey Maybe so. Funny, either seems to work.
Does not seem as if she is trying to be - but: she is.
Can’t get over how poised she is here. She’s grown so much in the past few years, it’s crazy.
Becoming an icon and making millions of dollars has really helped her self esteem and made her happier than the early days when she was normal
Steven and Billie hit this interview out of the Fruckin park...
MrArcher0
Great Fruckin Reference!
FRUCK, YEAH!!
T no
You mean she has to conform to an idea, yours, of what is “correct” and proper? She has to fit into that small mind of yours?
Fruck that! She is who she is, and most people appreciate that expression of originality.
She’s so cool and genuine and in 3 interviews I’ve seen she doesn’t criticize anyone. I really like her. I’m an old dude who’s not really into her music, but she seems like a really good person. Congrats to her on her success!
👍🏻
Same. I don't get her music. But she is very likeable.
That’s how I got into her honestly. I think it was nardwuar interviews but she knocks interviews out of the park and shows her truth.
She’s a genuine artist
Also as a fellow old dude, I keep thinking her parents have done a great job and it shows in her behavior, her cogent awareness of everything and the depth of her music. I agree, I love this kid, she's a special kind of artist.
@@solderbuff I'm in the same boat, her music isn't for me but she opened the interview by saying she went through whatever else did, and it shows off that she's not terribly selfish. She could have said "Yeah my life was just flipped, now that I couldn't finish the tour" seems to realize everyone has levels of that happening.
I'm 70 and the cool thing is that I turned my 13 year old grand daughter on to Billie 2 years ago. She said " WHO ?"
I like you. You exist in the here and now; you're present. I bet you're just plain awesome, period.
Is your name Giovanni Giorgio, but everyone calls you Giorgio?
Ur a cool grandpa.😎
Hahaha, nice one, Billie is the only artist I know who has fans of all ages. My 10-year-old loves her too,.
a cool boomer! 💯
Her parents are the poster child for "How to give everything to raising your children." Success or not, Billie and Finneas exemplify their parents and what human being should be. Care for others in this world today no matter what.
I don't know much about her, so this interview was very insightful - and the FIRST thing I thought was - her Parents have done a masterful job raising her.
Robert ~
Thanks for this thoughtful response.
Hey parents have showed me what kid of parent I want to be...
Facts! I say this alll the time and was just talking to someone about their parenting style today. Families must take note.
We need her parents to write a parenting how-to book for us all. lol
There is a few kinds of great Colbert interviews. There is the ''Here's a friend of mine'' with guests like John Oliver etc, there is the ''Stephen doesn't expect this lady to hit on him and then gets flustered and it's amazing'', and then there is the sincere ''Stephen is a true fan of this person and asks thoughtful and interesting questions about things he wants to know''. Cool to see he giving Billie Eilish that treatment.
I totally agree that there are different interview modes, but I just want to add that something very endearing is that when it is someone like John Oliver, Stephen still shows his admiration and appreciation for the talents of his friends. You feel me?
And her every response is vapid. He did his best.
@@globalwarmhugs7741 Im not certain you know what vapid means.

i love how the interviewer makes the questions intresting and i love how billie actually takes time to answer it and actually thinks what she wants to say
She seems far older than her years. Far more self aware and able to express her feelings than I was capable of back then.
Billie is so humble and well spoken, gracious and real! This is why she is SO LOVED!
Damn giving Billie a 20 min interview, pretty lengthy for Stephen, but really appreciated it for this! This really casual interview is honestly one of Stephens best over zoom.
He knows where his bread is buttered. Love Stephen, but am disappointed in him for this pathetic pandering.
@@tigerfightsmonkey9268 sorry just because you don’t like Billie doesn’t mean he’s pandering.
Hi@@EveryCrazyDay ! Thanks for your opinion! It is valuable. But, I wonder if you know what "pandering" means? And why do you say "sorry"? And why do you make assumptions about what I personally like or don't like? And why do you think your assumptions have anything to do with actual facts? Your response also makes me wonder - is this just another young, inexperienced-in-life person defending a likewise-ignorant pop idol? So many questions!
@@tigerfightsmonkey9268 I mean with great grammar like “inexperienced-in-life person” I going to assume you’re either as naive as myself or even worse. Same age, and I agree, Billie Eilish is great.
There's a *ton* of great music out there, though. It takes a bit of research to find the things one likes, obviously, but there are soooo many good bands & musicians doing their thing. Do yourself a favor and listen to her music. It'll surprise you with how incredible it is. She is truly impressive.
Listen to her haunting whispers on Finneas' super-dope fire beats. It's a treat, both the albums.
I thinks Billie is spot on trusting her own judgement and instinct. That's what makes her original and authentic and that is a rare thing in an age where a lot of people are trying to be a copy of a succesfull person in the hope of being successfull themselves. She took the gamble and won big, good for her!

Stephen is so smitten with her. Not in a romantic way, but as an artist, and maybe a little as a dad. I think she represents the triumph of the artist who didn't sell herself out to be a success. I think most successful artists, even Stephen, had to make choices that they would have preferred to not have to make. So he's happy for her, and impressed by her.
There are very few teenagers whose intellect I'd be willing to lend an ear to. Billie brings me down to earth every time I hear her in these long form interviews with her brilliant mind and beautiful words.

@@vp4744 yes I totally agree. I'm sure it's not easy to carry on naturally in interviews, in fact I've heard many express how uncomfortable and unnatural it feels... Can't be easy at all

This was such a wonderful example of treating a young female artist with genuine respect and appreciation for her accomplishments and talent.
Honestly, this is one of the best interviews I have ever seen. Stephen asks meaningful questions and she is authentic and honest.
It is a strange time in life... to be watching this and having such respect and appreciation of an artist, that low-key wish of "I would like to know this person, to call them friend and be able to muse about life.." and then to have it hit you. She is so much younger than you, literally worlds apart because of it.
To be so thoroughly caught up in the wisdom of a person's words and evident ideas that you forget about age, culture, gender that in the narrative of the stories those mean nothing. Sadly we are not beings of pure intellect, we do not live in a vacuum and because of that I will never know her. But it is okay, I wish our society was more pure, but for now. It isn't.
Society doesn't need to be pure in order for you to be. Your response to the interview is evidence of that.
Society will never be pure. Be true to yourself. Don't fear what others say. Most people live on fear. Worrying will not change tomorrow. Have faith in yourself.
How do you define pure? Because how I see it is a homogenous society, and I don't consider this that much of a good thing.
In some ways, isn't the world more interesting because of its impurities? I mean, yes, there are things that we can and should improve, but... wouldn't a homogeneous world filled with people having the same level of interest, the same amount of honesty and without that little sarcasm and pointless passive aggressiveness here and there be kinda boring?
Also, stupidity is not always a bad thing. It's very useful for humour and we all have a little bit of it once in a while.
And about being a "pure" person, quit that... not that you can't acheive it... but that this idea that you should be pure can only be toxic for yourself.
@Black Claws Thank you for your poignant ruminations. Your frequent mentions of desire to "know" this 18-year-old girl who "is so much younger than you" also inspires thought: is @Black Claws just a creepy old man? We may never know. But it is okay - I wish our society was more pure, but for now, it isn't.
