Australians should be reaping the benefits of the wealth of this land from its abundant resources such as its natural gas and minerals. Politicians from both Labor and the LNP need to explain why this country can sell 100 billion cubic metres of natural gas for $800 million while Qatar can sell the same quantity for $27 billion?
".... Australia is set to become the world’s largest exporter of LNG by 2021, overtaking Qatar in the Persian Gulf.
But that year, when both countries are each forecast to export roughly 100bn cubic metres of LNG, Australia’s government is expected to receive just $800m in PRRT revenues, while Qatar’s government is expected to receive $26.6bn in royalties.”
    (The Guardian Newspaper)
“New analysis of data published by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) shows that five of the gas industry’s most prominent companies have paid no income tax for at least the past seven years, despite a combined income from their Australian operations of $138 billion.
Four of the five members of the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) (Arrow Energy, Australia-Pacific LNG, Chevron and ExxonMobil) that haven’t paid any income tax are foreign owned resulting in all profits heading straight offshore.”
“In 2015 Chevron estimated it would have paid around $4 billion in “direct taxations and royalties” by 2020. It has paid no income tax or resource tax over that period.
In 2013 Shell claimed that its Prelude floating LNG project would pay $12 billion in taxes over the life of the project. Shell has since acknowledged it will never pay PRRT and has paid no income tax since 2015.
An eighth company, Australian company Santos, paid just $6 million income tax on $28.9 billion of income, and paid no income tax from 2015 to 2018 and 2020.”
    (Australia Institute)
, ".... Yet, US oil major Exxon has sold a staggering $56 billion worth of oil and gas - drilled from seabeds around Australia - and paid not one red cent in tax on that income in six years.”
    (Michael West 2021 Tax Dodgers)
The cost of living in this country is being driven upwards because the entire burden of funding the running costs of this country are falling entirely upon the shoulders of its citizens. Meanwhile, big business pays nothing in tax and, in some cases, even receive handouts from us the taxpayers. Both sides of politics are responsible for this situation.
“The major issue of inflation since the pandemic is that the price of non-discretionary items - ie those things you can’t avoid paying, like food, utilities, petrol, insurance - has risen faster than for discretionary items. In the past year the prices of non-discretionary items rose 6.6%”.
    (The Guardian Newspaper)
The one factor all of these discretionary items have in common is that their rise in price is driven by the government’s tax structure and its ever growing demand for revenue to fund its responsibilities. For example, a rise in the fuel excise tax makes the task of transporting goods around the nation more expensive and so supermarket prices are, in turn, forced to rise. We then experience this as a growing cost of living burden. If big business paid its fair share of taxes then the burden placed upon you and I would not be so great and taxes like the fuel excise, for example, would be much lower.

It was called the mining tax - by the LNP - and they fought and defeated it.
Stop this, LNP and ALP nonsense. You don't get a fair price for the minerals in crown land because the super resources tax was shot down. We are the only country, out of the top 14 produces, that don't have such a tax. (In the same way that we are the only country that allows franking credits to be used in the way that they are).

I don't see how any honest person could see that thumbnail (acres upon acres covered in solar panels) and think to themselves 'this is great for the environment!'... It's awful. That land has ceased to be farmland or wildlife and destroyed the biodiversity in the area. Not to mention messing with the weather due to the lack of natural tree/bush lines and messing with the water tables by not having a natural groundcover or mycelium network beneath the cover (which maintains moisture naturally and keeps topsoil protected and in place).

Exactly. Especially in time, when broken panels will simply be bypassed and decay and slowly accumulate as ugly junk, because repair/replacement is too expensive or plainly unavailable. No reserve funds are set aside for end-of-life disposal.

You don't need to locate solar farms on productive land - deserts, wastelands are where they should go. China puts up massive solar farms in deserts and then grow stuff in the shade underneath & graze sheep under them too. They also locate them over small rivers and canals where they help to cut down on evaporation. In about 20 countries huge solar farms float on the water in disused open cut mines.

      @@petermclaren2665
On deserts is where you want to put inclined solar panels.
Well we did just that in the desert in Kuwait, to generate electrical power and thermal power for a seawater desalination plant.
During the day it was hot, so the photovoltaic cells lost efficiency.
The thermal glass panels had the same surface but concentrating mirrors behind to produce the temperature needed to operate the multistage flash desalinator.
At night the air temperature dropped past the dew point, and water mixed with fine sand condensed on all panel surfaces.
Only with fresh water these deposits could be washed off, with the fresh water produced by desalination, every day, almost.
The problem was there was less water remaining than promised .
Increasing the water production with more panels, did not help.
Scraping did, with a lot of hired help. In the end the invasion of the Iraki army put an end to it.
But the fact remains, that high temperatures and the need to clean the solar panels cost too much to justify the reduced power generated. Especially the fine sand accumulation, past seals, affecting electrical junction boxes. all requiring high maintenance costs by workers losing motivation rather quickly.

Batteries do not produce electricity - they store electricity, which is produced elsewhere, especially by coal, uranium, ground-gas-powered power plants or diesel-powered generators. So the claim that an electric car is a zero-emission vehicle is not at all true.
Since forty percent of the electricity produced in the United States comes from coal power plants, forty percent of electric cars on the road are coal-based.
But that's not all yet. Those of you who are passionate about electric cars and a green revolution should take a closer look at the batteries, but also wind turbines and solar cells.
A typical electric car battery weighs a thousand pounds, about the size of a travel suitcase. It contains twenty-five pounds of lithium, sixty pounds of nickel, 44 pounds of manganese, 30 pounds of cobalt, 200 pounds of copper and 400 pounds of aluminum, steel and plastic. There are over 6,000 individual lithium-ion cells inside.
To make each EV battery, you need to process 25,000 pounds of sole for lithium, 30,000 pounds of resin for the cobalt, 5,000 pounds of resin for nickel and 25,000 pounds of copper for the copper. All in all you need to dig 500,000 pounds of the earth crust for a battery.
The main problem with solar systems is the chemicals used to convert silicon into the silicon used for the panels. In order to produce sufficient pure silicon, it must be processed with salic acid, sulfur acid, salpetic acid, fluoride hydrogen, trichlorethane and acetone. It takes massive amounts of coal to produce solar panels.
In addition, gallium, arsenide, copper indium gallium dieselenide and cadmium telluride are needed, which are also highly toxic. Silicone dust poses a threat to workers, and the plates cannot be recycled.
Wind turbines are the nonplusultra in terms of costs and environmental destruction. Each windwheel weighs 1688 tons (which is equivalent to 23 houses) and contains 1300 tons of concrete, 295 tons of steel, 48 tons of iron, 24 tons of glass fiber, and the hard-to-earth rare earth neodym, praseodym and dysprosium. Each of the three blades weighs around 81,000 pounds and has a life span of 15 to 20 years, then they must be replaced. We can't recycle used rotor blades, they, along with used solar panels go into landfill.
These technologies may have their place, but you have to look beyond the myth of emission freedom.
“Going Green” may sound like a utopic ideal, but if you look at the hidden and inconsiderate costs realistic and unbiased, you’ll find that “Going green” is doing more harm to the Earth’s environment than it appears WHEN YOU LOOK THROUGH THE SMOKE & MIRRORS.
I'm not against mining, electric vehicles, wind or solar energy. But I show the reality of the situation.
And also. THERE IS NO CLIMATE CRISIS IN THE FIRST PLACE, IT`S ALL A MASSIVE HOAX!

Benefits include increased agricultural yields (main effect) reduced winter heating costs and fewer deaths from hypothermia. We should slowly transition to alternative energy sources as fossil fuels are a finite resource not because there is any significant problem with the climate.
The main regulators of climate are Milankovitch cycles, continental drift and stellar evolution of the sun.
We are currently in a geological ice age at a glacial minimum.

Canavan will always get a voice on Bolt's show. He and his fellow Neanderthals have kept Australia at a standstill now for almost two decades. Irrespective of Bolt's views, the world is transitioning to renewable power. Australia under the Coalition have resolutely stuck to an old technology, in the hope that the rest of the world is wrong. Now Canavan is crowing because Australia needs coal fired electricity in an emergency, partly caused by worn out power stations. We should be much further down the track with alternatives, and would be but for a head in the sand attitude by a government with 1950's ideas.
