Got to hand it to Neville, there’s no way he didn’t know he was going to get shredded and he came on anyway. Yes, he’s doing it for the money, but maybe we should see whether he actually uses his platform as he’s promised here to do before we slap the hypocrisy label on his forehead. Hislop never spares people who deserve it, as Neville does, but it’s not out of malice. It seemed to me more a warning to Neville not to forget what’s expected of him when he gets to the World Cup as a famous person who’s spoken out on these topics before…. Not to squander his opportunity. [Edit: magnitude, not multitude!]
I’m genuinely interested to see if he makes any sort of comment whilst he’s there. Even if it’s a small one. I doubt it entirely but I’ll keep an open mind and see.
@@StevieCooper likewise. It’s a tightrope walk for Neville - if he speaks out he’ll almost certainly get the chop. @@swetasorab He's worth an estimated $25,000,000. So it's not as if he needs the work. @@robertadams8192 I agree entirely. I just meant that his point - about being able to say his piece on a stage that is assuredly international and larger than club football commentary - was valid, so complete condemnation could perhaps wait until he had the opportunity to be critical of Qatar AT the World Cup and didn’t use it.
Neither Paul nor Ian applauded at the end. Hard to tell after the stage lights went down but it looked like a bit of a delay before Ian shook Gary's hand also. Gary didn't really retort after "The elephant in the room" bit. Pretty much every question after that was met with Paul saying "we don't know the answer, just tell us". I can definitely see Gary following his political ambitions within the next 3-5 years. Madeley had some overly rehearsed lines. But one or two good ones also. Thanks for uploading.
If these people had lived and worked in Qatar for a year they'd have a much different viewpoint, or at least a nuanced one. Foreign workers bring 100's of millions of dollars a year to their home countries in S. Asia, Southeast Asia, and North Africa. People who'd have no chance of earning almost any money at home At least 1.8 million of the pop. of Qatar (about 2.3 million) are foreign workers, mostly from developing nations, many of whom raise families. You'd be more advantaged to speak Hindi than Arabic in much of Doha, since a sort of 500 word English is the most common language. The deaths of foreign workers are a scandal and easily avoided if the Qataris wold simply put A/C into the trailers they sleep in, where they often get their heart attacks.
They could not say a word against Qatar or the world cup. All these celebs and football clubs said alot before going over to Qatar but nothing once there or since. Beckham was paid 200 million pounds...and he was shite as a spokesperson. He only knows 50 words. Morally compromised, there you go David...two new words .
Not sure what Neville would achieve calling out Qatari human rights abuses on a broadcast for foreign audiences, other than a shallow exercise in virtue signaling undercut by his own complicity. The Qatari government probably wouldn't much care, because domestic audiences will just see the prestige and vindication of international participation.
It's getting very difficult to continue laughing at an ever-worsening situation. Maybe there's no time left for any humour at all. I've been saying this for y-e-a-r-s. Yes, it's not funny.
Madeley's first time on television? You're on camera, man, get your hands out of the way. (I'm joking, but he noticeably spends half the show talking from behind his hands)
I like how everyone is whining about this that and the other regarding Qatar. Stop trade with them. Stop buying their carbon products. Then we can see how much integrity everyone has. Hypocrites.
Was this guest host invited on merely as a set up - knowing Ian would more than likely go for him? I agree with Ian's stance but it this the right venue? Pretty shitty treatment in my book even if good for click bait. Not exactly a level playing field - was it!
From what I recall the show has a 30 year history of doing that. Those guest can expect it when they sign up. It's part of what they have to do to promote whatever they are selling or to get their appreance fee. Kind of like Nevermind the Buzzcocks, they would often book someone just to get shreddered for "fun".
Gotta say I think Ian is barking up the wrong tree here. The Qatari regime has been using slave labour for decades, yet all western regimes invest heavily in doing business with them. Nothing will change if Gary Neville goes there, he’s there to do a job, and he’s been very critical of FIFA allowing this, which in his situation most definitely requires more guts than sitting in a panel show and ask someone to follow one’s own morals. The questions should be asked to leading politicians instead: why is doing business with these regimes something that’s encouraged? Why can these regimes use English football clubs and other business in England to wash their names? Why is it ok that the UK buys huge amounts of gas from Qatar? In the last couple of years none of these regimes or our endeavours with them have been questioned by anyone but a bunch of leftists and football fans who might be jealous of Newcastle and Manchester City. You absolutely can go there to do a job and still be critical of the regime. We have to be able to keep two separate thoughts simultaneously.
I disagree, that it's been normalised doesn't really make it any more acceptable and I don't see it as brave to have ones cake and eat it too by taking the money while shaking your head in disapproval.
Being critical of the regime is all well and good, but if Gary is going to take their money he needs to either shut up or accept being called a hypocrite whose principles are for sale. Politicians take heat for dealing with Qatar all the time, even though they have to deal with the Qatari government as part of their duties, while old soccer players do not often find themselves in the same position. Ian had a chance to call out a hypocrite and he took it.
@@michaelj.beglinjr.2804 he’s not taking their money though, is he? Isn’t he taking pay from the network he’s commentating for, who as far as I know aren’t getting paid to be there?
@@missingsig what happens to gary neville doesn't matter to me the least. Dear Prime Minister (for the moment) Sunak,
do please tell what might be "more pressing" matter than
the imminent collapse of the climate on which we *all* (including the rich) depend?

Got to hand it to Neville, there’s no way he didn’t know he was going to get shredded and he came on anyway. He has a point, his reach is orders of magnitude higher as a commentator than it would be if he stays in the UK and criticises Qatar.
But at the same time, he’ll have said his piece, been heard around the world (not just the UK) and THEN got fired. Which is better than quitting beforehand and preaching to a much smaller audience. Here’s hoping! 🤞🏾
It would be so nice if English supporters behave as they should in a foreign country.
@@swetasorab He's worth an estimated $25,000,000. So it's not as if he needs the work. And if he got fired for taking a humanitarian stand (Qatar has admitted that hundreds of migrant workers have died building the facilities ... which is just a fraction of the thousands who have died since 2010 working in Qatar) it might well backfire on his employers. BTW anything he did say he could have said while taking the morale high ground and refusing to work for the immoral regime! But, maybe the paycheck was just to good to say no to!

To use a football parlance Hislop is a legend! Gary Neville is a hypocrite.
Eff off, Neville.
Actually, Paul answered quite normally, not with "just tell us".
It would also help if they let workers take breaks and drink water when needed.
@@robertadams8192 You would lick the Qatari's backsides if they tossed pocket change in your general direction.
Bit disappointing that they think rape jokes are ok. They're normally much better than that.
He’s probably being relaxed in his normal form. He’s a news host so he would have known that.
nope, I stopped watching after they got Neville
Bit of the Angus Deayton problem. How can someone from the world of football criticise systemic homophobia?
Green woman hair style no looky good.
But it bothers me that when it's football, it's fair game to blame everyone who cares, but nobody cares about the underlying issues. The problem is our trade and other mechanisms that normalie these countries. It's a much bigger issue that most western countries pension funds have huge ammounts of money there than the fact that football is being played there for a couple of weeks.
As far as i'm aware Gary Neville has been speaking about these issues for a pretty long time now. As far as I know, nobody else on the panel has, especially Ian. But the one who's at least spoken about it is the one who's getting hanged. And sure, Garys response isn't great, but i think this focus on blaming just the world cup and the people involved with it while not caring about the other issues is ignorant at best, but at worst, (and more likely at that) dishonest.
@@i0ushephf Hello Phil.
I hate the fake skinhead cut. Do they have to harvest everything from subcultures? Well, it looks crappy because she just imitates. That's not how it is cut.
Come on Ian!! Gary doesn't deserve an ambush like that, he's only doing His job out there. Bad taste mate!!!
Not a very good show this week. Maisie Adam is obnoxious and Ian Hislop too precious. If Ian Hislop feels so strongly about the BBC broadcasting the World Cup, he should quit. Neville is doing a job and it's not up to him to cure the world's ills.
6,500 migrant workers died working on this freak show. Or does that not bother you? And that`s just the start of this money grab on an international sporting event by a corrupt FIFA who do buisness with the devil himself and tell the football fans to turn a blind eye and not bring politics into sport. Human rights is at the forefront of every football fan all over the world and this non event that starts next week will be pissed on by real football fans and all those who would normally tune into or even get on board such a huge global event, but this is not a normal World Cup. FIFA need to be completley dismantled and reinvented with a dose of intregty and decency who are tuned into the heart and soul of the beautiful game, proper football heads.
In life sometimes one should take a moral stand rather than accept money from an evil regime.
@@martinmcdonald4207 I take it that you won't be watching or patronising any of the advertisers. FIFA has been corrupt for decades. Why would they change now and what have you done until now? The UK has a billion dollar trade surplus with Qatar so you're part of it whether you like it or not.
