Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (aka G6PD deficiency) is the most common enzymopathy worldwide...
G6PD deficiency (favism) is an x-linked recessive disorder, therefore more common in males than females.
G6PD deficiency is protective against Plasmodium falciparum malaria.
Patients may experience an acute hemolytic episode after consuming fava beans (that's why it's called "favism"). Fave beans, in this case, is an oxidative agent.
Symptoms include jaundice (yellow skin, dark urine), fatigue, pallor, drowsiness, exercise intolerance, shortness of breath, abdominal, or lumbar pain.
The most common stressor in G6PD deficiency is infections.
Reticulocyte count will be high in this case

Does dark urine present in haemolytic conditions, bcz dark urine is shown when, the conjugated bilirubin passing through urine in obstructive jaundice.
In haemolytic anaemia ,no bilirubin is passed in the urine ,except only the light colouring urobilin is only expelled in the urine,so chances of dark color in urine is less.

Hello @medicosis perfectionalis I read the opposite for G6PD-deficiency on Uptodate they wrote: "The net effect is that the deficient red cells become rigid and nondeformable, making them susceptible to stagnation and destruction by reticuloendothelial macrophages in the marrow, spleen and liver [45,46]. Although this type of hemolysis is predominantly extravascular, intravascular hemolysis also occurs, leading to hemoglobinemia and hemoglobinuria." I read in alot of sources that it is predominantly intravascular like you mentioned, but I'm no longer sure.
Thank you for your incredible videos!

Living with a g6pd deficiency- information is hard to come by. This helped me understand so much more than any dr has ever taken the time to do; especially for a common deficiency. Although I don’t eat a lot of beans and avoided them my whole life; I was exposed to fava beans/falafel possibly due to the restaurant using the same oil or tools to fry the French fries as they do the falafel. I had a painful reaction afterward. It felt like the RBC’s were trying to escape through my skin or by any means possible. & now I understand why the urine is so dark afterward. Thank you for this.
