500 years ago. Glorious, pure glory indeed.
J.S. Bach set me on a path to Sweelinck.

I'm sad no one has commented on this so far, so I'll take that honor! What beautiful music! It reminds me of great works like the Black Tulip from Alexandre Dumas. It tells something of the Netherlands that is its true essence instead of "cheese, hookers, pot, wooden shoes and farmers". I'm a proud Dutchman with direct Indo-ancestry, I'd rather see this promoted! Thank you for your excellent upload! Favorited by me. :)

In other news, Sweelinck is probably my favourite composer. Music of a polyphonic nature is the only music that really interests me. I think the composers that lived right around the turn of the century from the 1500s to the 1600s are the best namely Byrd, Gibbons, and of course Sweelinck. There is just a joy of life that was in this music that was lost through Baroque sentiment for dramatic music. I think the inclusion of drama in music beginning with Monteverdi largely killed it.

JAN PIETERSZOON SWEELINCK { DEVENTER 1562~1621 AMSTERDAM } " CANTIONES SACRAE III " .

In concluding her article on Sweelinck in „Erflaters van onze beschaving“ Annie Romein honors Sweelinck as a European artist, so important for his German heirs. Like Rembrandt he was forgotten in his own country for a long time, esteemed but centuries later. Hurray for our times!

Beautiful music, thank you. And by the way the Dutch have been ahead of the rest of the world for decades in their progressive social policies.

In the very things you have listed.

When composers of the 19th century start to talk about "absolute music" they have no idea. After Monteverdi, there can be no such thing as "absolute music" save for perhaps the fugues Bach and his contemporaries. The shift towards a harmonic system necessitates a dramatic approach towards music, where the validity of a piece is measured largely by it's ability to excite in it's harmonic formulations. This then, kills all "absolutism" in music. No longer is there music, but now "music-drama."

    How so?

I would hardly consider cheese, wooden shoes and farmers to be a disservice. The hookers and pot? The only difference is that we're not hypocrite enough to make it illegal while it happens everywhere under MUCH worse circumstances because it is illegal. If you do want pot or a prostitute here you can do it without making victims with people who do it out of free will without breaking the law. Hardly a disservice if you ask me - but the country's more than that is the point. :)

It is good you are proud of ancestry, though you must accept your country has done itself a disservice this last century.

Sorry my comment was inappropriate. I'm conflicted on my stance towards Dutch people. When you run a country what is the right thing to do? Make prostitution illegal because it is morally degrading, or legalize because it is going to happen away? It's hard to know what the right thing to do is. I guess at the end of the day there really is no "right decision". There is only God's justice.
