  • After the deadly mass-shooting at an elementary school in the town of Uvalde, the United States remains divided over the “right to bear arms”. For some, it is a fundamental right - for others, a fundamental evil.
The mass-shooting at Robb Elementary School shook the small town of Uvalde, Texas. It left twenty-one people dead, most of them children. As the first of the victims are laid to rest, political divisions are once again emerging across the US. On the one hand, there is a wave of solidarity with the victims' families, coupled with calls for stricter and more effective gun safety laws. On the other hand, there are the staunch defenders of an unrestricted right to bear arms. They believe it is people, not weapons, that cause such tragedies, and they use this argument to block any reform. Examples of these two irreconcilable points of view can even be found in Uvalde itself, just days after the tragic massacre. A report by Carolina Chimoy.

Hey DW, now do a story about the authorities in Uvalde and their heavy-handed intimidation of residents as they try to cover up the lack of police response to the shooting.

Hard to make sense of one gun tragedy after another as someone who grew up where guns are not legal...

Uvalde didn't have good guys with guns that day. I'm all for an age debate, mental health red flags, etc. And where the Federal government fails, the individual states can establish their own laws. But, that police force down there needs to be taken to task as well. "Good guys?"

The sad thing is that those that argue that it’s not the guns but instead it’s mental health tend to be the ones who object to universal healthcare that would actually allow to ensure access to mental health treatment for everyone.

I understand the historical precendent, the way the right to own guns speaks to the heart of American liberalism. I understand the argument behind "guns don't kill people, people kill people" and why people may feel that the only way out of a situation like this is to own guns for self-defense, since " criminals get guns illegally anyway" .But I feel that having guns enables and encourages violence, it's a lot easier and faster to kill with guns than it is with knives or other weapons.. and most of the guns used in mass shootings are probably bought legally anyway, given how easy it is to get hold of them. I feel like nothing is going to change because of the gun lobby, though.

"If it can happen here, it can happen anywhere." But it DOESN'T happen anywhere else. Only in America are mass shootings a daily thing, and school shootings something that happens every week.

Every time there’s a gun related crisis in America, all that the government says is, “we will fix the background check.” Clearly, fixing the background check isn’t cutting it anymore. America needs more than a background check.
