  • Custom radiator covers for a customers rental property. All made from MDF. My process and how 8 covers take up a lot of valuable room in the shop.

    what is the math to figure out the slat spacing, width, etc?

    • @JoePalumbo221
      @JoePalumbo221  Před 7 měsíci

      I just take the total width of the opening and divide by the amount of space between 2 slats and fudge the number until all are equally centered and the reveal on both ends are equal. I know there is a proper method, but this works for me.

    I'm looking to try to make something like you did. I was wondering how would it be to use pocketholes for the slots so they sit flush with the front. I'm fairly new at woodworking so just trying to learn!!

    • @JoePalumbo221
      @JoePalumbo221  Před 2 lety

      I think that would be fine ...a lot of drilling for sure but shouldn't be a problem. Just be careful on the thickness of the slats. If too thin they you may have some splitting. Thanks for the question

    Joe. Can you tell me how wide your rails and styles are?

    • @JoePalumbo221
      @JoePalumbo221  Před rokem

      To be honest I don't remember. I want to say 4.5 inches on both rails and styles.

      I did mine 4 inch rails. It’s esthetically pleasing. Anything more than that might be a bit too thick.

      Yes I believe they were 4 inches wide.

    Very helpful video! I'm about to tackle the task of making 7 of these for the steam radiators in my house. I'm sure it'll take me quite a bit more time, but luckily I can store them in place til i get around to painting them. What's your opinion on the use of of MDF vs. Plywood or solid pine?

    • @JoePalumbo221
      @JoePalumbo221  Před 3 lety +1

      I think MDF will be more stable considering the amount of moisture that the radiator puts off. With a a good finish there should be no expansion or contraction. With pine, unless it's extremely sealed and well prepped opens up a tone more issues. Thanks for watching!
