  • CHAIN WRESTLING FLOW ROLL w/ Matt Hayter
    The 1st video in my new series giving you insight into what a chain wrestling flow roll looks like. Plus it's narrated by me for extra, geeky, technical knowhow!
    Essentially what a flow roll is, is using technique to flow from hold to hold, position to position. There is only some resistance offered in defence, and the goal is to practice technique while expressing creativity, in a setting that is closer to a real match than just drilling in isolation. As long as you have a partner who will work with you, not against you (too much) you can't really go wrong!
    Let me know what you think!

    I love how little they're bumping, but they're still "selling"/ registering each hold.
    Always fun to hear your thought process.

    Please please please do more posts like this one! Just got back from taking the fam out to dinner and saw this. This is the content that I have absolutely positively been waiting for and wanting to see. So much fun to flow in these. Used to play with TJ often. I’m looking forward to seeing you mix it up with more people. Thanks again!

    I usually do this before every show I work

    This is the type of style im looking to get into as a pro wrestler, and its really great to see you working through the chessmaster-like mindset behind setting up the opportunities for holds through transitions and 3D space (i.e. setting up the crucifix pin from top control and rolling back following the tight pin).
    I plan on watching and taking notes on this ENTIRE playlist, but to put myself into the mindset, any tips/ videos for someone looking to adapt a more shooty background to pro wrestling?

      First and foremost, if you don’t already, actually gain a martial arts background. It will help ten-fold. It’s rare that someone can pull off a strike or grapple heavy style/character without some sort of foundation in it.
      I also think that studying submission grappling tutorials (i.e. BJJ, Catch Wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling) can also help the process. There are an incredible amount on CZcams.

      @damianslater appreciated! I'm mostly drawing on my folkstyle and bjj background. Definitely going to look more into freestyle and catch techniques though!

    Thanks for posting!
    Here in Texas, in pro wrestling grappling or chain is looked down upon a bit so whenever I see someone of a like mind, I love it.
    I've found myself at an empasse as I feel like I've made headway with that style but it's definitely like pulling teeth. Let alone calling it in ring or anything like that.
    I often feel like I'm searching for a type of wrestling that I watch often (be it old school or modern) but to actually get to do it at a competent level is few and far between.
    I'm honestly at a point where I don't know what to do. Should I stay or go? Should I join the rest of the world and just look to get over via a .gif or throw myself off a balcony to get over
    I feel like you might understand this plight.
    Have you felt this way?

      @damianslater  Před 2 lety +4

      I can absolutely empathise with that. The thing is though, regardless of how you wrestle, if you can’t get the audience to understand it and appreciate it, you aren’t doing it well enough.
      For the longest time I just blamed our uneducated crowds for the fact that my mat-based stuff wasn’t getting over. In hindsight, I just wasn’t telling enough of a story within the context of grappling. Sure I could just say “whatever, I’m gonna keep doing my thing” and keep getting met with crickets, but for me the ultimate goal is to check both boxes.
      Bryan Danielson made grappling work in a very non-grappling WWE environment and that’s what made me take a step back and re-assess my approach.

    Its called greco roman knuckle lock but i've never actually seen it in the greco roman olympics 🤷‍♂️

    • @damianslater
      @damianslater  Před 2 lety +1

      I was going to say the same thing, but I also can’t say I’m too familiar with greco. I occasionally train some freestyle wrestling but have never been taught a knuckle lock.

    When flowing like this, are you still focusing on performing everything (selling the holds, making the noises, being in character) or are you treating closer to a shoot where you're just trying to escape and getting control?

    • @damianslater
      @damianslater  Před 2 lety +1

      Not really. You’ll see there’s some selling but it’s more just out of habit. I just like to clear my mind and think/react in the moment. For me it’s more about being creative, problem solving and trying new things.
