- This is an experimental travel project where I tried to assess the similarities and differences between the Bethesda Fallouts and the places they're set. It covers Washington D.C. and the Capital Wasteland, Point Lookout in Maryland, Fallout 4's Commonwealth, Far Harbor in Maine, and the great state of West Virginia. It's not completely comprehensive and includes some best guesses and mistakes. Nevertheless, this represents my best possible attempt to find the intersection of fact and fiction in the Fallout universe.

Most of the time when I'm tuning in these days, it's to the travelogues. The narration is spectacular, and make a great companion to the work day and bring these places to life. Atomic Pilgrimage and the Lincoln Highway are two of my favorite videos.
His writing voice and the travelogue format go together like peantubutter and jelly

The story of Noah sneaking into the real life Institute is extremely endearing. My university didn't run on access cards, but I'm proud of the student that randomly heard somebody trying the locked door and decided to let him in to a world famous place of learning.
These card scannners are very new. They got added to MIT during Covid as a health precaution (to improve Test & Trace), and just haven't been removed when the building got opened up. To my knowledge, there's a few other Universities that went the same route. It's unfortunate, as University libraries were great places to work/study for anybody, and they were generally speaking pretty open as long as you weren't disruptive and had the confidence to pretend you belonged.
Hearing Noah's commentary on the moth-man's unbelievably toned clapcakes was truly inspiring. Another gem from my favorite travel writer.

the gag about a free cold war museum being a perfect honey pot designed specifically for you had me laughing so much I had to pause the video. This travel doc is a gem!
For me was the admiration speech of mothman buttocks and slowly touched it.

I was working with a team of developers in Boston at the time 4 released, and there was much excitement around the office about how you could essentially navigate the in-game city without consulting the map if you were familiar with IRL Boston at all. And Quincy today looks EXACTLY like it does in-game, complete with jet-addled ghouls and crumbling architecture.
Anyway, can’t wait to watch this later today. Your essays are always exceptional and a delight whenever they appear.
Noah's original Fallout video is one of my comfort videos. New Vegas is my all time favorite games and seeing everything in that game for real is just stunning. No other person can do a travelogue like him, hearing him wax philosophical about geography, Americana, history, and video games for hours.
And now, I have a sequel I didn't know I desperately needed.
I believe Noah is working on an update on his original Fallout video but all these travelogues are definitely great

The FO 1/2/NV video is one of my favorite YT videos ever. I’m not even a fan of travel content. Noah is just that good of a writer/narrator. I also watched that video after having a particularly bad day, so it’s a comfort video for me too.
I know these are controversial opinions, but I love Fallout 3 and 76. I’ve never been so excited to go home and watch a YT video after this popped up on my notifications.
It's really cool as a european to see these layers of real america in the games. Especially Fallout 4. Rebuilding the commonwealth at the sight where it first came about is such a sweet way to start that game.

Born, raised, and living in Boston, I could comfortably tell a FO4 player how to get around if they were familiar with the game. I was pleased by the number of references, the accurate geography, the mostly accurate place name locations, etc. What really blew me away was the inclusion of niche local spots like Don Bosco Technical HS. I found out Emil Pagliarulo went to Bosco, and a light bulb went off. IT WAS AN INSIDE JOB! Haha. Top notch work.
As a historian, I really enjoy these travel logs. I think your writing does an excellent job of exploring the materiality of these spaces and a reflection of a deep appreciation of significance of what is otherwise considered mundane. Many thanks for your work.
Noah you should get a gas monitor for urban exploration if you're gonna be running around ruins. Those confined spaces can easily fill with asphyxiating gasses and by the time you realize it'd be too late. Very important piece of safety equipment

The Boston section reminds me of when I was playing Fallout 4 and two of my daughters were living in Jamaica Plain at the time. Just by randomly exploring, I found Jamaica Plain in the game and managed to snap a screenshot with the "New Area Discovered" caption still up. In view were burned-out and crumbling buildings, decaying houses, and I think there was a column of smoke rising in the distance - typical Fallout stuff. I sent it to my daughters, and the almost immediate reply was "Looks about right."
I grew up in Bar Harbor, basically spent the first 20 years of my life there. The Far Harbor section, while brief, is absolutely heartwarming -- only a travel log like yours can do justice to the feelings I get walking around my own hometown. Glad you liked Acadia!
Mixing video games with travel content is fantastic! It shows that games can teach us more about the real world then most people realize. The reason I explore so much when I travel is because of how I explored every nook and cranny of games I played as a kid. Games grew up with me in that sense.
For me, an old fuddy duddy that was born in 1977, it was "where in the world is carmen sandiego?" for the apple II that interested me in travel :P
I know Americana is a big part of Noah's thing but he should ABSOLUTELY come to Europe some day. I'd love to here what he makes of the ruins on top of ruins on top of ruins that quite literally forms the foundation of so many European cities.
Would be great to see his perspective on some of these Old World places. I'm reminded of the old saying that in America a hundred years is a long time and in Europe a hundred miles is a long way. (of course you could also go to China or India or something and have both be meaningless, but that's a bit harder to do as a tourist lol)
I'd also be curious to see some stuff on my own home country of Canada, which is so similar to the US except for all of the really fascinating ways it's not. I imagine to an American tourist a lot of it would be quite uncanny.

I would be really delighted to see Noah visiting Europe. As a European myself, in find these videos incredibly insightful as they make the entire allure of Americana so intriguing.
a travelogue of all the similar locations to Red Dead 2 would be tremendously awe inspiring if/when you find the time to plan it out.
I’d love Noah to go on RDR inspired trip, problem is how much of those locations have changed or were more of inspired rather than actual places.

Like almost all of your essays, it feels like if I cut out a single paragraph it wouldn't feel as rich or wonderful. You've become my all-time favorite video essayist and there's so much for me to come back to every time. Any time Noah uploads a new video, the internet rejoices. Few people can release a three hour video that viewers WANT to see all the way through.
Fallout 4 has been a huge source of comfort to me since it came out because it gave me a huge world to explore while being bedbound from severe chronic illness. I’ve been dreaming of visiting Boston for years and haven’t been able to do so because of said illness so this video made me incredibly happy! Thank you for letting us live vicariously through you, I really appreciate the time an energy you put into this wonderful tour.

As a Native Western Marylander and current resident of Rockville, it’s more than a little trippy to see Noah discovering all the places I’ve been visiting since grade school. So glad he had the idea of going to High Rock, it’s literally like 15 miles from where I grew up but I never would have made the Fallout connection. Little disappointed he couldn’t visit the real-life location of Mothership Zeta, though…

Small correction, at 12:42, those scaffolds are from the Capitol Exterior Preservation project's phase 3 which is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and the project as a whole has been ongoing for several years now. Its purpose is to restore the exterior of the capitol which has been weathered by the elements. A few years back they were working on the House and Senate sides, and once they're done with the west face of the capitol they'll do the east face.

Having the artist get basic facts about damage on the capitol building incorrect, sea level rise at harbors misstated, and miss characterize the thoughts and intentions of those he doesn't agree with degrades his work. If he has his information wrong about the riot on Jan 6th, it calls into question the details given about other historical events. If he interprets other historical events through a modern hard-left lense, the I have to question his accuracy and the quality of any other information he provides...

The Boston portion is so fascinating to me because my brother lived right in the middle of downtown for several years. You can see the window of his old apartment in several shots. I have eaten at the Chipotle where Nathaniel Hawthorne once chatted with Ralph Waldo Emerson. I have dined at the Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in the old town hall. It fascinated me how much of Boston's "ancient" history was still standing and still publicly accessible, even if it was made to serve a completely different purpose.
The man, myth, legend, returns once again to deliver a high quality video that somehow synthesizes travel content with solid video game review. Noah, I don't know how you do it. But once again, well done, and also again: thank you for making yet another work day that much more entertaining!

This is sort of surreal for me. I live in the Boston area, and every year for the past 30+ years I've gone up to Mt Desert Island for a week to stay in a cabin at the base of a mountain named for one of my ancestors. Every now and then I look over at the video and see something I'm familiar with.
I'm at 2:01:19, and I know the bridge Noah is driving over. Its the exact place the family dog would start perking up and getting excited when I was growing up. Having someone else describe their experience driving a route that is so indelibly burned into my soul is strange.
Another thoughtful piece for my mind to sink into while i get through my work week.
It's hardly an original observation, but while i adore your video game essays (what brought your channel to my recommendations, as is the case with many I'd wager), I'm glad I humored your travelogues, as they've quickly become my favorite bits of your work.
All of your work is deeply resonant with me, and your travelogues are so infectiously humanistic that it shatters my apathy, shaking me awake and making me a bit more able to enjoy my present tense. Thank you for what you do, sincerely.

As far as I'm concerned, you are one of THE premier video essayists. As an American, I have never been one to be enamored by Americana; your travelogues help me to see a glint of its appeal.

I love FO4's Boston, you can really feel that they put a lot of care and detail into making it, more than most other real life inspired game settings. I think it's the strongest aspect of the game and I'd love to visit real Boston one day.

Ahhhh dude thank you so much I literally live on great cranberry (one of the town of the cranberry isles islands) and oh man when I was like 13 I literally cried when I found out my tiny unknown hometown was gonna be in a fallout game.
I was a fallout fan since like the age of 8 and it was genuinly my greatest “gaming” experience being able to see the places I see often in my favorite game series.
Wish you would have been able to come out to the cranberry’s. We have two ferries, one that only runs during the summer, and one that runs all year long constantly so I’m assuming you just didn’t know about the year round one which makes me sad :( glad you saw as much as you did around mount desert tho you really did a good job packing eveything into two days!!

New videos are always bittersweet. On one hand I get days of content in rapturous bliss, listening to Noah's excellent writing and captivating narration. On the other, they must come to an end and leave me once more with reality.

I appreciate that you bring more to these types of travelogues than just a simple compare and contrast of the virtual and physical locations. It's easy to forget the history behind some of the said small or large monuments and even simply the geography of an area. Thank you for making this content.
The best part was sneaking into MIT. Wish there was a little more footage of Salem, but was just glad to see the museum from the outside.

@40:50 - at the time of Fallout 3's development, Luray Caverns was significantly less built up, resembling Skyline's entrance and parking far more than the massive amusement park it does today, and even had a different (and notably smaller) entrance closer to the top of the hill. I had last gone there probably 8 years ago or so, before (I presume) they blasted the new entrance into the cavern and made all the different aboveground attractions (though the museum still existed at that time, albeit smaller than I remember). When I returned last year, it was like approaching a whole new place - even the policy on guided versus self-guided tours, since Luray _used_ to keep lights on as little as possible so as not to encourage plant life such as moss and lichen to grow inside the cave. Now, the lights are on all the time at least while self-guided tours are open - and it has made everything close to the entrance significantly greener, and warmer. While the self-guided tours are cool and all the main attractions are still there, it feels a little odd that they've switched their policy from absolute preservation to more of a mineral museum a la the Smithsonian National History Museum.
I'm sorry to hear you had such an underwhelming experience at Skyline - that used to be one of my favorite caves to visit back in the day, but again I haven't been in years. The rocks in your footage look significantly more worn down than I remember - a shame considering the whole "please don't touch" policy they at least used to have. And, again, they seem to leave the lights on significantly longer than they used to - the swaths of moss visible in several points throughout your tour was entirely absent during my last visit many years ago.
That being said - you went on an adventure, in the truest sense of the word, that so many others may never even come close to experiencing in their entire lifetime. You've done research, you've experienced, you've felt, all because of a franchise that chose to replicate parts of our real world, both familiar and unfamiliar. And demonstrated that you don't need a formal education to be well read, well versed, or well experienced. I, among many others, appreciate your tenacity, taste, philosophy, courage, and of course most importantly of all, your curiosity. Thank you for taking us on this adventure with you, Noah.
A couple of times in the latter parts of this video I looked away from the screen and looked back only to have to take a split second to figure out whether I was looking at game footage or your own irl footage. Well done!

When you get to the railroad aspects, it just screams to me about how drastically they dropped the ball between what could've been and what is in Fallout 4.

absolutely gobsmacked to see the first thing in this list be high rock, a place i’ve spent so much time eating lunch at, smoking joints, and generally staring wistfully out into nothing at.
that little corner of the world feels very small, it’s almost entirely farmland, and people do not talk to you if they you Do Not Look Like Them, and everything of convenience is 45 minutes away, but god damn if it isn’t one of the most beautiful and romantic places i’ve ever lived in my life.

The Point Pleasant bit had me in hysterics. Brilliant as always. Nobody but Noah can make a 3 hour video travelling around video game landmarks such a fun and interesting time.
The whole DC part of this video was so surreal for me. Not only did you video 2 separate houses I've lived in, but you brought up the Quarry House Tavern, my old local! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. That place is amazing.
For several videos I've been puzzled and a little impressed by Mr. Gervais' decision to read aloud his list of Patreon supporters, including names that are idiosyncratic internet handles or clearly intentional absurdities. I couldn't fathom the motive that drove him to perform that herculean and thankless feat of continuous speech. Now the list has finally defeated his mysterious endurance, and I find myself feeling relieved on his behalf.
I agree, didn't even watch the thing when he did that.
The bit about Fort Armistead in reference to the Arboretum is very refreshing. I grew up in New York and having the run down beat up parts of town vs the flashy more corporate/touristy spots was part of the appeal. I now live in Georgia and it's a bit frustrating to see everyone labeling decay as such a tragedy. Having a rundown spot for punks like myself to hang is kind of, I don't know, foundational to a good city or town in my opinion. It gives a lot of depth and perspective to places that might not have much in terms of variety of aesthetic or theme.
If you're near Atlanta, check out Doll's Head Trail. You have to go a bit off the beaten path to find it but its similarly wild.

It's really cool hearing Noah's thoughts on my neck of the woods. I live in southwest Virginia, so both the DC area and West Virginia are familiar sights. I heartily agree that the free public museums in DC are worth the trip alone. I also recommend the Espionage Museum, which isn't free, but it is a truly fascinating experience.
You are by a long mile the best travel writer I know. When you run out of America, if you were to do a fundraiser to travel somewhere else abroad, I'd put in to it. Amazing stuff as always.

As someone who's lived in JP all her life and tries to take a trip up to Maine every summer, the Fallout 4 section of the video was a treat. I've never actually gotten around to playing Fallout 4 myself, so it's especially neat to see how well the city was represented in the game. And it's always fun seeing how an outside perspective takes in places I've grown up around; I haven't been to the Waterworks Museum in years.
Small correction @1:24:53 The swan pond in Fallout 4 is actually the pond from Boston's Public Garden right across the street from the Common. At that pond you can take a ride on swan boats hence why there are swan boats in the game.

ALSO I know the daughter of the owner of the asylum, she was one of those hippie girls who rolled up to school in a BMW but wore tattered clothes to look like she was a dirtball. Pretty cool but always found her wealth depiction ironic (she just got back from a 7 month trip to Europe)

Yesssssssss! Glad 76 was included! I've been spending a ton of time in that game this past year, and while as a fallout game it might not hold up to past entries, as a game it's quite fun and good (although I started playing long after it was fixed multiple times).
Also as a DC-area native, this will be interesting to see. Noah was near my house?!
