    Trip Itinerary:
The ferry: San Pedro to Two Harbors, via Catalina Express. You can call (800) 995-4386 to make reservations. The ferry requires ALL dogs to have a muzzle, mesh is okay. When I was there masks were required. It's about 1 hour to Avalon, and 2 hours to two harbor on the ferry I took. I'd call to get specifics. The ferry doesn't run daily***
The portion of the trail that I hiked: Two Harbors to Parsons Landing. There are two ways to get there, All Trails (the app) lists both, I took the fire road that winds from Two Harbors to the campground. It's a straight shot and there isn't really any elevation gain. It's sunny. Really sunny here. So brings lots of water.
Parsons Landing Campground: you can make reservations online here: www.bookyoursi...
Dogs aren't allowed at all the campgrounds on the island, but they are allowed on leash at Parsons Landing. When you get off the ferry, you go to the visitors center a few hundred feet from the dock to check in & get your locker combo, and that locker has 2 gallons of fresh water, and a bundle of firewood and fire starter. If you want the whole place to yourself like I had it, check the reservations / make reservations close to departure, and choose mid week (I was there Tuesday-Thursday, and on Thursday 2 groups showed up).
Service: There is service basically the whole road to Parsons Landing (Verizon), but there isn't ANY service at the campground itself. It's about a 1/2 mile walk to service.
The ferry home: Make sure ferries are running on the day you choose to go home. I almost messed this one up hahaha.
Overall: If I had a daughter that was set on the idea of going backpacking by herself, I'd suggest trying this exact route first, to test things out, and to bring me peace of mind. I'd also send her with a Garmin. Mine is this one: www.amazon.com...
    Happy trails!

I'm Mariah Alice, and I live the "solo female van life" with my dog, Finn. We've been on the road full time since June of 2020, and although our road has been met with what feels like a zillion ups and downs, we've finally gotten to the point where living in a van feels like home. Sometimes we're alone in the woods, sometimes we're alone in a desert, sometimes we're chasing snow or thunderstorms, sometimes we're trying to see all 50 states, and sometimes we're making weekly videos here on CZcams talking about our feelings, anxiety, loneliness, seasonal extreme sadness..... yeah. I don't know what I'm doing with my life. And that's okay. I think :)

Mariah, thank you for sharing your life with us! I’m old enough probably to be your grandmother and you have taught me so much! I have regretted not doing what you are doing when I was in my early 20, fresh out of a bad marriage. My idea was a motorcycle with the trailer on back and sidecar for my puppy. But fear kept me from exploring new possibilities, and myself. Thank you for being afraid and doing it anyway. As I look at my 2 young adult children, I hope they can do that as well. (I just hope I don’t push them too hard! One day I won’t have to live thru you or them! I will be adventuring eventually myself!) Please be safe and keep exploring! I so enjoy keeping up with your adventures!

I can't begin to tell you how much this video warms my heart! I'm 64 now, and back in the late 70's and 80's, I lived in L.A. My friends and I often went hiking on Catalina Island. I even camped right there at Parson's Landing- that exact beach! And as with you, we were the only ones there. Wonderful "Ranger Dan" kindly brought us fresh drinking water and fire wood every couple days. Happily, I can say that after watching your gorgeous video, it's still just as beautiful as ever. We snorkeled in the kelp beds, grilled fish on the campfire, hid our food from the wild boars and stayed salty (no showers there) for sun-kissed days on end. Those were the days! 💙🌊💙

You are so brave to face that very rational fear of going on a backpacking trip alone. I miss the sun so much and your videos recently give my relief in that feeling, but also create more longing for the warmer days.

What a great spot! Falling asleep on the beach with just the waves sounds incredible.
For your bed warmer - buy a Nalgene bottle (one of the hard plastic, wide mouth ones), boil water, wrap it in a t shirt and stash it in your sleeping bag before you go to bed. Nalgenes are practically indestructible and won't leak. We learned that trick in Nepal when it was cold enough to freeze water in our rooms, and it keeps your feet warm all night long.

Like you, I had my first backpack on Catalina Island. I went with a school buddy who had backpacking experience. We chose an easy route for my first time (vs. you and your mom's challenging route). We took the bus up from Avalon up to the airport and hiked down to Little Harbor, which is a lovely campground. I remember digging my bare feet into the little pebbles under the water at the beach; so heavenly after a hike! There was a bison in the campground. I remember a nice shower. Next day we hiked back to the airport, taking the bus back down to Avalon. We chowed out majorly at the Sandtrap Restaurant and Bar: beers and nachos with heaping tasty coverings. After backpacking is one of time when I feel the hungriest. Surfing's another.

Just wanted to say that as someone who has been building my van for the better part of a year and am about to take the leap into van living, I find your channel incredibly helpful. Not only showing the beauty of van living but also the downsides, so many people depict it as a perfect way to live your life, but it doesn't feel real, like living life through an Instagram filter. But your channel feels so much more genuine and mentally preparing me for the ups and downs for the reality of van living.
    Keep it up :)

Honestly "no service and no people" sounds ideal. Given the sheer quantity of people in California, I'm always astounded by how little the various hiking and backpacking trails are used. All the better for the people who love the outdoors. Once I did a 20 mile hike across the north rim of Yosemite valley and saw four people the entire day (excluding the trail ends where there were lots of people). 10/10, would recommend.

well done, Mariah! Good luck in your future adventures. Awareness is the key. I have done some solo backpacking and had several close calls - one stepping onto some rocks for an overlook view and heard a warning rattle from a rattlesnake less than 6" from my boot. Iy didnt strike and I moved my foot quickly. While solo backpacking Catalina 2003 (the north 1/2) I jumped onto a picnic table when a herd of about 40 bison ambled thru my camp. That was scary but they ignored me and I got some great photos. I swam in the cold brr Pacific O for the first time that trip and got worried scared when the trail kinda disappeared but just kept going and ended up in the charming Two Harbors and ferried back to Long Beach. Thanks for refreshing some good memories and Bravo for accomplishing a character- building experience.

Back packing is awesome. Good that you got the Garmin. You don't always need it but when you do it's important. British Columbia that is a must. Lots of national parks don't have service here

Thanks for sharing, definitely putting it ony list. Solar battery packs for charging your electronics. They are fairly lightweight and recharge themselves in the sun!

Great job! That's awesome, that you convinced yourself that you could do it. Every time you achieve a landmark like this, It'll only reinforce your confidence to do other great things. Finn is such a trooper. He's so willing to do whatever you're doing. Stay safe! Great video!

That was Soo lovely and peaceful Mariah. Thank you. Am in bed (in Scotland) with covid for the second time and it really relaxed me. Well done you for facing your fear and doing it. What a stunning place. Finn is so adorable and looks out for you. Take care and continue on. What a journey! ❤️🥰👋🐾

Beautiful place to relax and reset. I never doubted you could do this, heck your doing the whole Van life thing. This van just has soft walls and you carry it. Also, best bud Fin was there as well, never alone. Garmin Inreach is amazing tech. I carry one as well now. Use the Iridium Satellite system that offers the greatest coverage. Thanks for sharing the adventure.

There is nothing more peaceful than camping on a beach and falling asleep listening to the ocean under the stars.

Mariah- you are so much tougher than you think. It's obvious you have high anxiety and continue to push your way through it. Just randomly found one of your videos and now subscribed!
