The summer of 2010 saw one of the biggest manhunts in modern British history as police attempted to track down Raoul Moat, who had gone on the run after shooting his former partner and her new boyfriend, then firing on police officer David Rathband.
This documentary draws on the testimony of eyewitnesses, experts and those who knew him best to examine the chain of events that culminated in a six-hour stand-off in the Northumbrian countryside.

I was profoundly struck with a sense of sadness when it was mentioned that officer David Rathband took his own life, after being blinded for life in the line of duty, and barely survived being shot by this offender. @Bennie Boy It is a difference. It's always wrong to kill anyone compare to say you fighting with your colleagues or fighting with the police. There are 2 lines. One is staying between the public and the second line going after higher authority. Literally going to war with tbe police. The police are there to protect and serve the public so when a criminal goes after the police directly, those who are meant to be be going after the criminals, the second line is crossed.

@Bennie Boy the police are not routinely armed in Britain. Police officers do an incredibly difficult and dangerous job keeping the public safe. When there is a terrorist attack they rush in where others flee. They are vastly underfunded and understaffed, and are often targeted because of the job they do, making them more vulnerable to assaults.

Was Moat using steroids? What really caused his break with sanity?

    •  Před 4 lety +1

Much of it was his wife's duplicity. According to people who knew him, Moat was the kind of man who was perfectly amenable and only got frustrated when people weren't straight with him. While he had his faults, guile wasn't one of them. He was easily to manipulate, and people tried to take advantage of him often, and he'd end up in the shit. If he asked you something, and you lied to him, he'd believe you, but if he found out later, he'd be very disappointed.
And drugs. I expect the first thing he did when he got out, was got a good snootful of cocaine. People make terrible decisions on cocaine.

this guy didnt have a real gun, he had a shotgun, but the ammo is everything with a gun like that, he was definitely firing birdshot, thats why he modified the shells. because a blast from 00 buck to the head, wouldnt leave a cop blind, or require 3 shots to kill a man, real ammo wouldve taken that cops head clean off at the shoulders in one shot. its dangerous, but birdshot isnt killing anyone unless the shot is perfectly placed, & even then chance would play a huge part. think about it, he shot a cop , twice in the eyes & face, & the worst it did was blind him....aside form being real loud, he might as well have used a BB gun.

I'm not saying it was right or wrong that there was any public support for him.
It's just something I remember at the time and thinking it was a bit strange. Of course there's been other criminals who've enjoyed public support before (Bank robbers and gangsters for example) but I can't think of any other time that there's been support from some sections of the public for someone on a killing spree. At least in Britain anyway.

I just can’t help feeling that there is another side to this story. Police do target people for continuing harassment sometimes for the most trivial of reasons pushing people beyond their tolerance. Whilst I do not condone violence in any form, I don’t think it is all that surprising that once in a while somebody feels the need and has the motivation to retaliate. It’s all very well for the police to demonise any action against them and fail to comprehend their own part in these kind of offences but until there is a realisation that deliberate harassing behaviour from individual or groups of police men may have consequences for themselves or their colleagues, retaliation may very well become more prevalent. The statement that there was a real risk of danger to the general public made via the media by the police was definitely inflammatory and possibly without any realistic basis.
