    Remember to tell patients that even though they are being anesthetized the local anesthesia doesn't really work for abscesses. The patient will still feel the blade opening the abscess. And they will feel all the injections. Coming from experience.

      i had an abscess about a month and a half ago and while i did feel the blade, it was mostly pressure, not pain. i did feel a poke when my provider cut deeper than the lidocaine went, but otherwise it wasn't too bad. i had cellulitis next to the abscess so by the time i had it drained, i would have let her cut that sucker open with no pain relief but a tylenol, it hurt so bad. as soon as it was drained and i was on antibiotics, the relief was unimaginable.
      i will say that it was a really strange sensation, like my doc was cutting through something granulated, but it hurt a lot less than the cellulitis did, so i didn't even really register it. and even with the open wound and pulling out the packing, none of the healing process hurt worse than having my cellulite infected and swollen to twice the size it should be (quite literally, comparing it to the other side of the area, it was double the size by the time i had it looked at). i wouldn't wish that crap on anyone.
      edit: the injections were HELL honestly, I'm normally fairly stoic when I'm in pain but she had to inject me around 10 times (i counted) to fully numb the area and i had to stifle myself. i was shaking uncontrollably by the time she was done, but after it took effect i was more than glad the whole process was over.

    I looked at this after draining a tiny abscess at home. It was on my genitals and it was probably half a cm in diameter so really tiny, but because of the sensitivity of the area it was uncomfortable. I had seen a doctor but he gave me antibiotics, and i took them correctly and it didnt even shrink. So i just used a bot of rubbing alcohol to sanitise the area, a sterile needle that i had and two ear cleaners (to press on the outside incase my hand weren't clean enough. I just slightly poled a hole and honestly it drained by itself. Then i just cleaned the area again and change to clean underwear in case the ones i were wearing had any bacteria on them. I think it went pretty well i just wanted to make sure i didnt do something wrong. This did not help me figure it out but it was still interesting, also made me question why the doc gave me antibiotics even tho im allergic to penicillin and he had to look for a few minutes until he found something that might work. He could have just drained it?!? Instead of me having to take more medication and stay in pain

    I have an abscess on my inner thigh. At the clinic I went to, they cut it open and mostly pushed on the edges of it. I don't think they stuck anything inside. It's not inflamed or soar anymore but it's still open at the moment. What concerns me is that the induration doesn't seem to be going away or getting smaller - is this normal? Should I be concerned that there are still pockets in there and it's going to come back? Tomorrow is my last day of antibiotics. The induration is about two inches in one direction and half an inch the other. But there's now swelling or pain for the most part.

      can confirm, got an abscess drained yesterday and i got cellulitis next to it too :/ it hurt so bad before i got it drained that I couldn't sleep, and I'd only had it for less than a week. the lidocaine shots were killer! ugh, right into the most tender parts around and into the abscess 😖 I didn't scream or cry but i had a vice grip on the side of the bed and was shaking by the time the doctor was done injecting me, lol!
      tomorrow is gonna suck because I'm going to have to remove the packing on my own... but at least it doesn't hurt nearly as much anymore 👍 and I'm holding out hope that pulling out the packing won't hurt as bad as the needles 🤞

    Hi. I have a question. First I'll tell you a little bit of my history. I have had several of these over the years.They always get infected and have cellulitus. I'm stage 3 kidney diease and have UTIs all the time. My Dr.s have treated all this with all kinds of antibiotics. I've even hospitalized and give IV.antibiotics. Well now since June I'll get one on my buttocks and by the time it gets almost healed another will develop. I currently have one the size of a golf ball. I was told years earlier that I was a MRSA carrier. I called my Primary Dr. yesterday and he was going to get me an appointment with a surgeon to excise it. I haven't received an appointment yet but I'm in a lot of pain so I think I'm just going to go to the ER. My question is if it's MRSA , should I be keep overnight and given IV antibiotics since I'm having such a hard time healing??? PS. Forgot to mention that in the past 5 months they have given me 3 different antibiotics and none are working.

      the gauze helps gather pus and healing fluids, which are then removed with the gauze (which promotes healing). After the gauze is removed, the hole left from the abscess and drainage will slowly heal over from the inside out. it does leave a scar (speaking from experience), but it heals quite nicely without stitches usually. i had an abscess about the size of a large grape (think the huge round ones) drained and packed about a month and a half ago, and all i have left to show for it is a fairly small scar. the scar is still healing and still a little red, but it's 100% stopped bleeding or scabbing. in another month or two, it'll probably be much harder to find without really looking for it.

    Imagine having an abscess and fibromyalgia. This crap hurts like hell. It takes over your whole being. I couldn't do sh@# or communicate with anyone. I tried putting hot compress on it and my doctor had put me on an antibiotic called cephelaxin. Didn't work at all, so I went to the ER last night. The drainage process almost took me out (just exaggerating), but lord Jesus my body was shaking after the procedure. I still wanna scream from going through that. But I'll say it's a relief to get that pus out of your body. My arm is still sore but it's way better than before. This crap is no joke. My doctor told me to not use any antiperspirant deodorants, only naturals. Also for a whole month I can't use deodorant. Wtf, I was like I'll smell. She grabbed my achy arm and said "Soap and Water" "You don't want this thing coming back". Sh@#, yes sir ma'am! I don't wish this on my worst enemy, well only my ex. He deserves this pain all over his body. But anyone that's dealing with this as we speak, go to the ER immediately. Don't suffer for 5 days like I did. Okay, let's dab armpits😂....Bye

      Hello, I’m a Provider that has performed many I&Ds. Although this procedure is the primary, most effective, and definitive treatment for abscess, perhaps yours was not ready yet. Meaning, we usually prescribe the hot pack to bring the infected fluid closer to the surface and the antibiotics are empirical or prophylactic to try and prevent infection spreading (look up SIRS and sepsis).

    • @reanami
      @reanami Před 2 lety +3

      I’m sorry you also had MRSA and cellulitis before, this means you are probably more susceptible to Skin and Soft Tissue Infections, which is a group of differential diagnoses that includes abscess and pre-abscess. I am glad you went to the ER for evaluation, but please don’t put down Healthcare Providers, we have feelings too, and we sought this career to help patients. We furthered our education so we could learn how best to treat patients. The workers in that particular ER, other hospitals, urgent care clinics, and me would never purposely harm a patient. Our intentions are never malicious, just thought you should know. Thank you for your time and consideration if you’re still reading this. Best of luck to you in the future.

I have a stupid abscess right now. My immune system is not as strong as it used to be. When you are at the hospital and get sick from someone else I know it is not on purpose. It would be wrong to think that. Ppl sue hospitals when it is not even the hospitals fault. The person who had it there fault but not on purpose. Drives me nuts when others sue places and blames the ppl and places who had no knowledge of it. Just a way for ppl to get money and that's wrong.

    As an old school nurse, it amazes me practitioners don’t routinely perform a “C&S” -Culture & Sensitivity. Sure it’s an additional cost but if you’re doing a costly ultrasound, why not try to determine which pathogen is causing the infection & most importantly, which antibiotic (if used) will effectively treat it. Why just make a stab in the dark with a general antibiotic when we’re already dealing with “MERSA” Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus on a grand scale in hospitals.

    I have a question, i was developing an anal abscess about three days, was growing rapidly. Until-and this is where i need some help-i started drinking lemon water and using Lidocaine on the wound. Today? Wound is almost completely pain free, i can sit down without pain, and i am continuing the lemon water. Could the water be helping me with the infection?

      Lemons have vitamin c which boost the immune system it is probably your body fighting the abscess but you should get checked incase
