In this video Daniel and Mick discuss Boost pedals. We have four kinds to hear: a treble boost, a dirty boost, a ‘clean’ boost and a mid boost. How do they react with clean and dirty amps? How do they react with another overdrive pedal? We’re here to find out…
    The pedals we’re using today:
Keeley Java Boost - no longer made
    Green Carrot Pedals Dirty Radish
    www.greencarrotpedals.co.uk/di...
Xotic RC-Booster (Scott Henderson model) - no longer made, try version 2 in the links

    Wampler Tumnus
    UK & Europe: bit.ly/2gclnLh

We also use a Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem distortion - no longer made
    MXR M300 Reverb

    Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man 1100-TT

    Interesting bits and go-to sections…
    - Discussion of today’s boosts starts at 2:50
    - Sound of the amps with no pedals: 5:22 (Super Reverb) & 6:08 (Victory BD1)
    - Treble boost - Keeley Java boost - discussion/explanation: 7:25
    - Using a treble boost with another overdrive pedal: 9:11
    - Dirty Boost - Green Carrot Pedals Dirty Radish - discussion/ demos: 16:25
    - ‘Clean’ Boost - Xotic RC Booster (Scott Henderson model) - discussion/ demos: 19:28
    - Mid Boost - Wampler Tumnus - discussion/ demos: 27:36
Mick is playing a Collings 290DC S and Fender American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster. Dan is playing a Gibson Custom 1958 Les Paul Standard.
Amps are a Fender Super Reverb with 4x10 Jensen alnico speakers and a Victory BD1 running through a Marshall 2061x with 2x12 Celestion G12H Anniversary speakers.
As always, all pedal and amp switching and routing is handled by TheGigRig G2.

I've got to say that the "That Pedal Show" is not only great fun but very informative. I have learned so much from it. By the way congrats to the Gigrig team who have just built me a pedal board to die for and my choice of pedals was very much inspired by this show. The G2 is a fabulous piece of kit, (thank you Dan) it's so easy to use and does so much more than I had envisaged or even imagined. The ability to move one pedal in every preset to another position in the chain without having to physically rewire it is a magical discovery and a godsend and the soft noiseless foot switches are terrific.
The quality of the build of my pedal board is first rate (well done Joe and Jake). It's the envy of so many. Thank you guys. The wet and dry amp set up is also a real quantum leap in terms of my tone and is inspiring my playing. So I am indebted, and please keep the show going.........Rest assured I shall be ordering a "That Pedal Show" T-Shirt and beanie to aid the cause. I can't thank you enough, Ian

Thanks That Pedal Show! I've built my pedal board today and as you know it can be an expensive thing to do if you have to buy some pedals and the board, power supply etc. But it has to be done if you're playing live. I had some pedals and bought a couple extra, but thanks to your show I've put it together in the order that you suggest for the front end and sent delay and trem to the effects loop. It sounds awesome and without your advice and suggestions I would not have got this result or known how to go about it in the way I did. Keep doing what you do it's interesting and useful.

Thanks Mick and Dan..Loved tumnus>reverb>super reverb at 29.47. Very pleased to hear that mild overdrive/boost whilst retaining the character and sound of the strat and SR. I can hear it, but i can't explain it like you guys do, in term of mid pushed, mid humped, and mid scooped. It seems that a mid scooped amp responds nicely to a mildly accentuated mid range boost. I've given up trying to change what the SR is, but happy to finally find something that will work with it. The soul driven worked nicely also. Compliments also to your guitar playing. cheers

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  Před 6 lety

Thank you. The Super Reverb is a tweaky beast, especially the reissues where that bright switch can be so ugly... but in common with many Blackface Fender amps, a little mid push can be a wonderful thing. Similarly, the Tube Screamer with its mid push and top end roll off can be the perfect foil for the Super and bright switch. ‘Tis all a balancing act. Glad you found this useful!

Thanks for another great show. My stream-of-consciousness bullet list: 1 - I love the sound of Mick's Collings (his Strat is pretty sweet-sounding as well). 2 - I LOVE it when Daniel goes into "shred mode". 3 - I LOVE the Platonic method premise with Daniel as Socrates and Mick as Phaedrus (or is it vice versa?). 4 - This is still the only show I feel reveals the tones of the various pedals in a subtle and significant way - kudos for your studio/engineering (slash-musicianship). 5 - The format is really the perfect platform from which to show off the gigrig - incredible. 6 - This is pretty much my favorite show, and is yet one more reason I look forward to Friday.

I would just like to say that you're show is killer! I've learned heaps about how to use pedals and shape the tone to find that sound! I recently purchased a QMX 6 as well, such a great tool! Keep up the fantastic work!
Also, I recently moved overseas and had to leave my amp behind:(... Maybe you guys could do a show about going straight into a sound board, which is what I've been battling with for the past year haha. Especially when the sound guy feels a divine calling to EQ your instrument every 5 mins....

You guys are costing me a lot of money ha ha! I love the reviews they are always entertaining and you are the best at putting great products put through their paces. The only problem is I want them all! I did buy the Sheriff 22 based on this review and it is awesome, I just can’t say enough about the tones you can get out of it. I have been a Fender man for years with an original 65 Deluxe Rvb and 66 Pro Rvb, as well as Blues jrs and a Webber Dumble clone of sorts which is too loud, they are great in their own way, but the Victory does so much and at a reasonable volume. With the 22 I can dial the bass and mids back a bit and up the treble and I have a fairly nice fender tone and then hit channel 2 for that lovely Marshall gain. Great job guys, I hope my budget holds out.

Great show, fella's... I'm such a huge fan!! It's so great to get such knowledgeable and practical advice from two fine chaps. I have a request... Could you PLEASE do a video discussing 60 cycle hum as it pertains to single coils. What it is, what affects it, and most importantly: best ways to tame it. There is SUCH a misunderstanding about it and you guys could help set the record straight. Thanks again!!!

+Adam Narrell Hey Adam, Mick here. It might work for a show... I've been playing Strats my whole life. The biggest hum exacerbaters are lights and screens. There are other things too, but those are the ones you encounter as a guitar player the most. You just learn to deal with it by physical position and using your volume control when you're not playing. In my opinion - and I'll just be clear that this is my own personal opinion - any physical or electronic intervention to get rid of the noise (noiseless pickups, noise gates etc) makes the guitar/amp/pedals sound less good to me. The other essential element is having your power/isolation really well sorted on your board, so that you're adding no more noise than you absolutely have to.
For the show, we sit there under lights and in close proximity to the amps. The single coils do hum, but we manage it with the volume pot on the guitar and physical position. If we can get a show out of that, we'll do it! Thanks for watching!

Great show! Learned more about boost pedals in 35 minutes than in all the years before. Have you guys ever discussed your own stage rigs and what you are trying to do with your own tones? I think that might prove interesting.

I've been using a screamer into a Timmy for a while now and it is a really nice sound. Use the timmy from anywhere from saturated clean to light overdrive (depending on pick attack and pickup selection) and then use the screamer to push it and push the mids a bit to get a stronger overdrive sound for when I need it.
There is just something about using a screamer/klone (something with some added mids) into another overdrive. Tumnus -> Carpe Diem -> super reverb towards the end was probably my personal favorite of the combinations shown.

+Jacob Hartman yeah, me too, the tumnus into the Carpe Diem just sounded and felt amazing! Definitely going to use that combination at my next gig

My first booster is the T&C Spark Mini. 49$ new.
Little bit of treble boost, 20 db boost with great clarity, and increased separation.
I keep it at end of chain, may get another for earlier in chain.

God I love Fridays! Great work guys. My EP is also a pedal I think I can never take off the board. I'm also currently blown away by radioheads new album. Is there any chance of persuading Ed to talk us through his approach to creating his guitar textures? Not your traditional bluesy guitar fare, but it would be fascinating and a wonderful episode - his work has really inspired me. I've even just bought a looper!!
    Cheers guys

Pedal order suggestion, as I was pleasantly surprised by how good this sounded, try a fuzz face style pedal into a treble booster. When I received my analogman sunlion (fuzz face and treble boost 2 in 1) that is the default order of the pedals. Into a nicely compressing valve amp it's really glorious and having the treble boost after (his has a "mid" "low" and standard switch, great for matching guitars), you can really articulate the fuzz face. The treble boost, also being germanium, reacted in an interesting way in that order. I've also tried that pedal into a prince of tone into a super and it's mega. Thanks for the vid as always!
