1990 King County Metro Breda "Dual-Mode" Diesel-Electric Articulated Bus

- Enjoy your ride onboard bus #5034, a 1990 Breda "Dual-Mode" Diesel-Electric articulated bus operated by King County Metro in Seattle. This unit is preserved by MEHVA, the Metro Employee Historic Vehicle Association, in its original conditions. Back in the Heydays of Breda, over 200 of these "dual-mode" buses roamed through the streets of Seattle providing service to the transit tunnel in downtown Seattle as electric-powered buses. Since 2003, the entire fleet of Breda buses have either been retired or converted to electric trolleybuses. This bus is powered by a Detroit Diesel 6V92TA diesel engine combo with ZF 4HP-590 transmission.

I used to ride the 255 in Kingsgate from 1993 to 1997, back when they had Loop A and B before going back to Seattle. Very fond memories....
In 1990 I worked in Breda ... I have designed many of the electrical systems of this dual bus.
I'm glad to know that it is still running ...

I watched this video from Breda 4239! I loved wjm these would fly through the tunnels! Beautiful Italian crasftmanship, rivals the MCI Classic is style.
This was year 2002 + Safeco Field (T-Moble Part) weas built in 1999, and Qwest (Lumen) Field was built in 2002.
I watched this video from Breda 4239, on the Route 7.
I remember when these used to ne the tunnel runners back in the day.

I used to drive these buses on certain tunnel routes in 2003 and 2004. They were slow in diesel mode and the driver's seat was quite uncomfortable compared to the seats that they got when they were retrofitted into trolleys.

45 Breda 's were retrofitted to Trolley, those units are now retired

@qwandiddy Yes, they are. Except the ones in use (besides 5034) are strictly trolley buses now, mainly for use on routes 7, 9, 43, and I think 49. They are numbered 4200-4258 and have the newer green seats instead of the blackish-brown leather ones. The smell of the old rubber floor remains, and the destination signs are now orange (plus 4221 having a white destination sign now).
Actually this one is maintained in the original form, so this is still technically diesel electric.

And this is the only one that still has full functionality. You must have had quite the work to do. Coach 5000-5002 didn't have all these rattles, but they were flaky.

actually those arnt diesel electric anymore since i found out that the breda had the diesel engine taken out of them and then they were put back in cause of weight issues but they never hooked them back up from what i read.
Not this one it’s a special Breda that they kept in its originally with the diesel engine still working
Just the way I remember those in their early years. They rode a lot nicer in the back half when they still had their diesel motors in them compared to the ones that had their diesel engines removed for conversion to straight electric trolley operation.The back end ride on the converted units is horrible!

their all just electric now no diesel engines there faster now than they were they run on 7, 43, 44, 49 routes of Seattle sometimes on the 36 route for beacon hill
