  • Hey all,
    Over the last couple months I have been testing and working through an issue with the ETZ21 adapter from Megadap so that I can use the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 lens on my Nikon Z7II, Z6II and Z5.
    In this video I talk through the challenges I faced and the incredible image quality of this lens.

    I'm using Sony Alfas and having bought the Zf and found the Magadap ETZ 21 adapter with my Sony GM and G lenses, it was like using Sony cameras and I got home after my vacation in Tokyo and added a Z9 to my collection. I ordered another Magadap ETZ 21 adapter.

    Thanks for the review. I do have a Sony A1 and the 7III and it also has the same focus issue. Sometimes looses focus and I have to turn off and on the camera to get it solved. Been using it for the last 3 weddings and I love it! Now, for the reception I find it not so good, my other Sony, Zeiss and Sigma lenses focus faster than the Tamron when there’s not much light.

      Oh so it may not be the adapter fault if it's doing the same thing on native Sonys

    The way Nikon and Canon are being so strategic with 3rd party lens makers, I doubt they'll let Tamron release a Z or RF version of this. Similar to the amazing DG DN lenses from Sigma, which is why I'm interested in the Megadap for my Z72. I just tried the Techart in a shop, and it was really flakey - aperture jumped around, shooting mode kept switching on its own. I took it off as fast as I could....
    Great vid; thanks.

      Appreciate the feedback. I don't see it coming out for Z soon, but I do think eventually they might. Hell, Nikon might even see it as an opportunity to create one of their own.

      @@strippedlist probably, but that's no comparison to this lens. The great thing about this is the wide side. There are already 70-200s , but widening it out below 70 like this makes it so much more versatile.

    I considered getting this for a Z8, because I love my Tamron 20-40mm on my A7R5. But I do remember not being able to update my firmware on.the Tamron - the lens or camera just wouldn't except the update, so I gave up. I'm glad I've watched this video because it would have probably been necessary to update the lens.
    I did contact Tamron but they didn't reply.

    Hi, how do you think about this plan if I buy this lens in E-Mount version with Megadap ETZ21Pro to use with Nikon Z8 instead of Z-Mount version, because I want to use this lens in with my Sony camera too. How accurate AF? Is it work fine?

  • @ozarksdigitalcreations9254

    I've wanted this lens for my Z7II for some time now. I've used it on a few buddies Sony's that shoot weddings and portraits with just this lens. Your problems may be the adapter, I was going to do this exact setup getting the adapter but I have recently heard horror stories about the Megadap Adapter. From losing connections and bricking after a few uses, issues like you are having or being DOA.

    • @ShuaPhotography
      @ShuaPhotography  Před rokem

      That's my conclusion as well. It's the adapter. It's still a rare occasion that it happens, but it does still happen. I still love using this lens though!

    Hi, I am considering the new Tamron 70-180 G2 for use with my Nikon ZF but using the Megadap ETZ21pro since its not available for Nikon (yet?) do you recommend going down this route ? and if it arrives in NikonZ mount later, upgrade it. Did you upgrade your 35-150 to the Nikon Z mount version in the end ?

    • @ShuaPhotography
      @ShuaPhotography  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I switched to the Nikon Z Version. Why do you want the 70-180 and not considering the 35-150 that's already in Z Mount?
      For the price of the 70-180 + ETZ21 you're already about at the retail price of the 35-150.

      @@ShuaPhotography Thank you for your reply. I have been considering both options. that 35-150 mm lens is a beauty !! For me the primary reason for choosing the 70-180 option over the 35-150 is that as a photographer I hardly ever use the 35-50 focal range and although its a great feature of the 35-150 ( OMG F2.0 35mm zoom !) it would be wasted on me both in cost and weight(The Tamron G2 70-180 also has VC. )I know that 70% of my shots are clustered around the 140-180mm range. and about 10% around the 70mm range. the rest is in the 24-28 mm range which i plan to use a 17-28mm lens for. ( I already have a 35mm f1.8 VC which I hardly use !! ) finally i have so many lenses that use the 67mm filter size or less. ! 70-200 f4, 85mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8, 24-200 Z and will be getting the 17-28 z, 150mm F2.8 macro..

      I owned a very imperfect Sigma 24-135/2.8-4.5 lens in the past. It had many issues but the range was great. It would be great if Sigma (or other manufacturer) resurrected that range and made it f/2.8 all the way.

    Having come across this adapter I am considering switching from Sony to Z8. Two Z8’s is a ton of £ so being able to use my GM glass to start with will be huge. I love how thin it is. Have you used it with any GM glass? Or the Sigma 84 f1.4 art for Sony FE mount

    I have zf + z mount version of the tamron. And only using af-c + burst mode while zooming quickly sometimes the focus get stucked and impossible to refocus, I have to shut down and turn on again.
    This is not happening on my z6ii body though…

    • @ShuaPhotography
      @ShuaPhotography  Před 5 měsíci

      I've been using the Z version since it got released and haven't had it get stuck like that. It still won't focus AS you're zooming, but once you stop and any focal length it gets focused. What body are you using it on?

    • @pr4y
      @pr4y Před 5 měsíci

      I'm using the ZF body mainly, it happened only with my ZF + burst mode. I can hear hunting, and if I'm switching to MF I can see the distance bar showing and changing while rotating the focus ring but it doesn't change the focus for real at all. Switching back to AF doesn't unlock the situation. I have either to remove the lens and put it back, or to switch off turn on again.
      This is only appearing on my ZF body, I tried on my Z6ii with the same settings, nothing happened.
      So I'm not sure if it's on the lens or body side... I have no issue at all with my ZF body with other lenses (Zoom, prime, adapted from EF Canon, third party viltrox etc...)
      I see there are 3 updates for the Tamron E mount, but nothing for the Z mount version.
      Anyway the lens is under 10y warranty in Switzerland, I just need to figure out if it's lens related or ZF body related.

  • @photographydiscourse1185

    Hi Shua,
    This is an interesting lens for sure - I think I would be more interested in a 28-70 f/2 like Canon makes than this as I do not like variable aperture and I feel that f/2 is really the slowest aperture that works well in very low light (IMO) - I like to keep the ISO down.
    That said, this is a very cool lens and a step in the right direction. I think it would be great if Nikon could make something that was f/2 across the zoom - maybe a 35-85 f/2 - this would be ideal. I am happy to bring along the 70-200 just for the long shots at the ceremony - I find that this is the only time that anything longer than 85mm is really necessary at a wedding.
    This all said, if it did release as native for the Z mount, I would consider trying it to see how much the 2.8 at the longer end bothered me. Also, I would be curious to know at what point in the focal range that it shuts down to 2.8 - you mentioned at 55mm it was at 2.2 - is it still at 2.5 by 85mm or is it already at 2.8? I'd be interested to know.
    For anyone that is okay with the 2.8 aperture in the dark, I would say that this lens is awesome, and you definitely got some nice images with it.
    Good work :)

      I agree with you about the low light aspect. Which is why I use my 1.8 primes for the low light situations. however the versatility of this lens is pretty epic IMO.
      As for the variable aperture, it hits 2.5 at 70mm, 2.7 at 80mm-120ish mm Then 2.8 from 120ish through 150mm.
      Thanks for the input!

    I bought the same adapter for a Nikon ZF, when I got the adapter in the box their was no watchmen to update firmware, any way when I mount a Sony G 24mm f2.8 to the Nikon ZF I can see what I want to photograph but the f stop on my camera screen doesn't register the f stop that the lens is set to and even though the camera was set to auto focus on the screen it shows manual focus, not happy with the setup I bought a Sony A7II open box unit from Adorama camera for 860 dollars, the camera came with a 28-70 kit lens and the price covered tax and shipping, the Sony A7II is a older camera but it is perfect for what I will use it for, it joins my camera collection of Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm and Nikon cameras.

      Hi ! A quick update of my previous posts. I have ordered another ETZ21 and I achieve to mount this new one on the fantastic Tamron lens 35-150 f/2-2,8.
