    I have followed the norse pantheon for almost 30 something years now and living in Florida. I have just always called myself. A heathen. I jokingly tell people I am a swamp Viking because of being born in Florida. And have lived here my whole life. My ancestry is in norway and germany, ireland in scotland. Someday I hope to find a kindred. There are none near me so I am still a solo practitioner but I do my lots end. My festivals and do my best to instruct my grandchildren. So that they understand a little bit more about it.

    Enjoyed the video :) was expecting mention of hof ("church") and of the horgs, the heaps of stone on which libations and offerings are poured. I'm surprised that so much else of the tradition is being reconstructed, including seidhr, but not something so tangible, and useful, as the horg. Is this because horgs were used only for the Vanir?

    • @northwoodskindred
      @northwoodskindred  Před 2 lety +1

      A horgr is not only for the Vanir, in fact after the Aesir, Vanir war they were all considered Aesir for the purpose of ritual. We have a horgr in our Vé as does most anyone with a dedicated ritual area. We may go into more detail if we do a video on the Horgr, Stalli, Alter and Vé, as to how they are different and the similarities. The Hof is an entirely different discussion that probably doesn't belong In a video about the basics.

      I have heard good things about it so I suppose it is as good as any. My favorite copy is in the back of the book " Germanic Heathenry" by James Hjuka Coulter for two reasons. 1. Hjuka is my blood brother so I am partial to his scholarly works, 2. It is the only translation that I am aware of, that was translated by someone who actually believes in it, not by a christian.

    • @northwoodskindred
      @northwoodskindred  Před 2 lety +1

      Unfortunately there is very little (none) reliable information on the afterlife. The 9 realms are mentioned on page 130 of the encyclopedia of germanic folklore mythology and magic. It is a reliable work although I don't recall where I read it before that, perhaps Snorri. Anyway the real truth is that the afterlife is, and probably will always be, an unsolved mystery. I know that doesn't help much but I hope it gives you a good start.

      There is no original sin, but breaching Frith and breaking oaths are very frowned on, although you will see it all the time. Don't fall in line with the people who say this is only for a certain race, ethnicity, or class of people. They obviously missed the point.

  • @TheMercian13
    @TheMercian13 Před 2 lety +1

    I’d like to point out there are multiple saga references to prostrating before the Gods, and some form of prostration is found in every single religion (except Satanism).
    One prime example is in the Færeyinga Saga, where Earl Haarkon upon seeing the goddess in a temple he (a noble) threw himself at her feet and remained there for a while.
    To not have some form of prostration is historically in-accurate, and if those brought up in the tradition believed in its significance who are we to contradict it? That’s my opinion on it, to not do so sounds very low-church Protestant to me.
    Aside from that, really enjoying your videos, please do keep putting them out to help those new to all of this.

    • @northwoodskindred
      @northwoodskindred  Před 2 lety +3

      I choose not to prostrate, as do many others on this path. It has never been something that I (personally) am comfortable with. If a god appears before me and commands me to take a knee then I will probably do so.
      Historically, those people are all dead, and notoriously bad at keeping records, recording rules, or even following orders.
      I suspect that it was, at that time, a choice and people did as they wished for the most part. I would also suspect that those who were subservient to a ruler (king, Karl, Jarl) probably got used to it, and those who were "free range" and nomadic did not. But in the end we are just guessing. We have about 30 pieces to a 5k piece puzzle.
      Thanks for the comment and welcome here 😀

    I would say that Thorson's rune books 96 and prior are decent. Before he turned pseudo Zoroastrian etc... Stephen Pollington and Meister Guido Von List for Runelore. Von List for the Armenian runes if they speak to you.
    I'd also add Ron Mcvan's works and Stephen McNallen's "Asatru, A Native European Spirituality".
