Just back from the X7 Coastrider after 13 hours on the buses FULLY based on the CZcams above. The 0700 bus from Paisley, 0740 direct bus from Glasgow to Aberdeen, the 1105 X7 to Dundee, a short bus to St Andrews and X60 to Edinburgh and the usual buses back to Glasgow and Paisley again. I agree with everything in this CZcams. If based in the central belt, I would add on the St Andrews and the X60 bus. Excellent addition and I am sure Vloggers will give this route the attention it deserves. Thanx to the CZcams video for making this such a great day.
Hi Torodd, many thanks for the comment and great to hear that my video helped you to enjoy the day. This is the kind of thing that inspires me to carry on doing this so really appreciate you taking the time to tell me about it. Cheers 😊👍
Great video as always Mark! Local knowledge here regarding the USBs not working: there's a switch in the cab the driver needs to press to enable them, and many often forget! If you pop down and remind them they usually turn them on.
Montrose is nowadays home to fellow travel CZcamsr, Steve Marsh. The train option is if anything more scenic and a lot quicker. I think few take it for a longer journey and I wasn't surprised the front two got off at Stonehaven. That said, in Scotland once you are 60 you get free bus travel, so then between train or bus the latter often wins.
@@LetsMakeaTrip There are lots of nice bus trips around Aberdeen. A trip on the 201 out to Braemar or the 35 up to Banff or Elgin are both nice scenic routes.
There’s loads of great services that city link do i used to drive the 900 busy busy from Glasgow to Edinburgh they use double deck plaxtons like the one you mentioned in Aberdeen great vid as usual !
I was on the X7 yesterday. Most of the old vehicles have now gone and been replaced with standard inter urban double deck coaches of exactly the same type as Stagecoach contribute to the pool for the Megabus/City link ABZ to GLA and EDI service. Great vid as alway. Next year I hope to do the Citylink route from Glasgow up to the Isle of Sky through the beautiful scenery of Glencoe so maybe the one to try.
You are correct Arbroath is a dump now. I was born & grew up there from 1949 & with a few years moving around with the RAF have ended up back here. The town's hay days were from the 1950s to the 1970s after that the place just died. There used to be a lot of medium industry with Mills & Factories & 2 very busy boat yards. We had a massive outdoor swimming pool just past Gayfield & yes it is the nearest football ground to the sea it's also the windiest & coldest. We're also famous for the Abbey where King Robert the Bruce & his nobles signed the Scottish Declaration of Independence. If you want to learn more just let me know. I've travelled that road from Aberdeen to Arbroath many many times over the years. I've enjoyed my afternoon with you journeying around Scotland & lucky enough to have visited everywhere you've been & then some as well as a lot of places in England & Wales. Thanks for making these vids.
The viaduct seen before Montrose as already pointed out is the "North Water" viaduct of the Bervie (Inverbervie) railway, a 12 mile coastal light railway opened in 1869, closed to passengers in 1951, and freight in 1966. On the road from Inverbervie to Montrose remains of the railway can be spotted easily on the left hand side of the road (It is worth getting off at St Cyrus for the magnificent long beach there). The history of the railway is complicated and was seen as a potential route to Aberdeen by the North British. The railway from Bervie later terminated at Montrose station. The portion from Montrose to just before St Cyrus is part of a pathway/national cycle route and is recommended. 🙂
Cheers ads, useful info for sure. If I did the route again, I would like to stop off at a few places and this sounds like a good excuse to do just that. Much appreciated mate 😊👍
Nice one. Aye, that would be an old railway viaduct on the left as you cross the narrow bridge into Montrose. As for RAF Montrose and the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre ... they are both the same thing really. The Heritage Centre is/was RAF Montrose.
Working for Stagecoach in Manchester..luckily get free travel nationwide on Stagecoach services & other major operators in the UK too. Have done the X7 a fair few times whilst travelling up north. The coach in question was new to the X7 service not the X74 as someone stated earlier. The X74 coaches like the X7 one , several got transferred within Scotland & are now sporting Citylink livery.
Cheers Mike for the info. Tbh, I had no idea of the history of that vehicle but I enjoyed it all the same. Not just the ride but some great scenery too. Will definitely return one day, take in a game as well with any luck - some interesting football grounds round that part of the world 👍
Lovely trip Mark. I have never travelled the route by bus but often the slow route is the more scenic. CityLink / WestCoastMotors service Glasgow to Campbeltown is a scenic route. A return journey could be flying back to Glasgow. Steve Marsh has a video of that. Or you could get the CalMac ferry back to Ardrossan (Summer only). Arbroath has interesting Abbey ruins and is associated with the Declaration of Arbroath, written there in 1320 before being sent off to Pope John XXII.
Some nice suggestions there Michael, appreciate the info and yes it’s a great idea. I do watch Steve’s videos so I’ll have to re-watch that and see how he got on. I am heading up to Fort William and Oban next month so watch this space. Cheers 😊👍
I have a confession to make Mark. Like those who protest about the misuse of apostrophes, I protest about folk misusing the place names Glen Coe and Glencoe. Glen Coe is the name of the valley. Glencoe is the name of the village near the foot of Glen Coe. No matter what you see elsewhere, trust me. I am sure that you will not make any such mistakes next month if travelling that way to Fort William. Enjoy the magnificent scenery in Glen Coe 🤣🏴.
I agree the Glasgow to Fort William with Scottish City Link is a wonderful journey which I did last June after having done a London to Glasgow overnighter on Megabus. This being due to my Cale Sleeper being cancelled thanks to the first of the long running rail strikes. I even carried on to Mallaig the same day. An interesting 24hrs on coaches and buses but the views once in Scotland were superb. Great vlogs, keep them coming please.
Cheers Danny. Yep not too bad at all. I took another (longer) one a couple of days later and overall they were pretty good. But compared to the train, well, all will be revealed in a future video!
Another great journey. Have you thought about doing the TfL X bus treble in London. X68 Russell Square to West Croydon bus station, X26 West Croydon - Heathrow Central, X140 Heathrow Central - Harrow. I've done the double before the days of the X140.
As a rep i used to go to Scotland every month start at Aberdeen Sunday night for Monday and down this route then from Wednesday Glasgow 2 days then the east coast on Friday absolutely love Scotland and made many friends in the car audio industry many years gone by
As a driver down here in Plymouth, that bus/coach you caught, they are lovely to drive. Aside from that, looked a good trip and some places I need to explore soon. As for the Leeds Whitby journey, (strangely couldn't make a comment on the actual video itself) Whitby is a lovely place that I want to spend more time in as well as exploring Harry Potter and Heartbeat land. Me and the missus and my daughters now want to take this journey probably from York. Looks stunning, on our to-do list and the quality of the bus is better than some I drive. Cheers Mark for the great videos. Looking forward to catching up with the rest of them now.
Cheers John, I’d love to have a go driving one tbh - anything! Not sure why you couldn’t comment on the Whitby one? Plenty more coming up though mate. Thanks for the support 😊👍
OK, that seems like a project for me this summer/the next sunny day. Paisley - Aberdeen - Paisley with the CityLink up and Stagecoach back. I did Stonehaven - Montrose on a racing bike back in 2001 and was very impressed by that scenery. I will be on the X7 this time around. Thank you for this video.
Great video. That's indeed a route which I should try in the future, since that scenery is amazing. The only longer bus services that I took in Scotland were the Stagecoach 179 between Annan and Carlisle and the 253 service of Border Buses between Edinburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed. I would recommend the latter
Cheers Enrico, i’ll be back in Scotland doing some more routes for sure. Only thing with this one, I’d have liked to have stopped off at one or two places so might look into getting day rangers in the future 👍
Hi Mark, depending on how far you feel like travelling Tel aviv to Eilat is an incredible bus trip one I have taken many times. As usual thanks for the great content 👍
Cheers Adam, I have been wondering about a flight down to Tel Aviv for a while, wasn’t sure what to do once there so this may give me some impetus. Probably won’t be for a while tbh but never say never 😊👍
How dare you call an Arbroath smokie a kipper!😂. We holidayed in Arbroath in the 70s and I noticed Pleasureland amusements in your video (just past the football ground) they are still going strong! Glad you are enjoying your trip here in Scotland😊
The Stagecoach East Scotland dayrider (just about a fiver more than the single) is INSANE value for money; unlimited travel on a full network with express routes all operated by coaches (including the X7 in its entirety) connecting many towns and cities. Yes, you can travel from Aberdeen to Glasgow or Edinburgh (change at Halbeath P&R) and back, exploring the towns and cities along the way, for just that £15 day ticket bought from the driver!
Another great video! Between you and Steve Marsh you've convinced me to go to Scotland's East Coast, just looks fantastic even in the Winter. It looks like there are so many options to get around too. Better start planning. P.S. Yes I do believe Arbroath has the closest ground to the sea in the UK, though Montrose has a famous hedge, but you might need to ask Footy Adventures about that 😂
Cheers Daz! Yes I watched a lot of Steve’s videos - there are some great little towns and villages along the way. If I did this again I think I’d want to be getting a day ranger and stopping off along the way to explore. 😊👍
Grimsby Town's Blundell Park, actually in Cleethorpes is adjacent to the water though it's debatable whether it's the sea or Humber estuary at that point.
Glasgow to Fort William on the city link bus followed by Fort William to mallaig on the train for some outstanding views. You could even do the small isle cruise from the ferry port in mallaig.
Cheers Neil. Many years ago I did the small isles cruise on what was then the Lochmor (I think). An amazing cruise I still remember to this day. Just a beautiful area and yes, a good excuse for another bus trip!

A very scenic Scottish coastal one is Scrabster to Inverness down the east coast.I don't think that it runs from Scrabster anymore and you have to walk into Thurso but it's only about 2km.When I did it years ago it was run by Scottish City Link.
Great video, Arbroath is indeed the closest football ground to the sea in the UK, I was lucky enough to go there for a game about a month ago and even tried the famous Smokie
I have a mate who is a Montrose fan and he said many years ago he went to an Arbroath Montrose game during the winter on a windy day and whilst watching the game he got soaked with sea water………..sounded like a lovely day out!
Hi Mark how you doing mate? Great video as always again mate that's an alright Stagecoach coach reminds me a bit of a National Express or a MegaBus coach that coach was in great condition even for being 7 years old £10.50 isn't too bad for a journey of distance those seats look comfortable to sit on its a shame that the USB Sockets was not working or stripped out like that the toilet facilities are good and clean ashame there's no toilet roll in the holder whelp if your cut short you would be in a mess its nice of them to have bike racks free of charge wow amazing coastal views of Scotland though specially sitting in front of the bus I would probably use that service if I was in Scotland professionally edited with good background music to accompany it hope your having a good day so far and keep up the great content as always👍
Hi FG, cheers for the comment mate, appreciated. Yep, overall, a decent bus and price. I would have no qualms using it again but would like to stop off at some of the places en route. All the best, Mark
@@LetsMakeaTripYour correct about a decent bus and decent price me thinking about using it might just be a maybe its a plesure to comment on all of your videos as there so entertaining and your such a top friendly bloke and I always enjoy your content hope your having a good day so far Mark 👍
You did well catching one of the few remaining coaches in X7 Coastrider livery - as they are all being phased out into the Yellow Distance livery Also worth pointing out a Day Ticket is £11.00 (50p more than the single journey you paid) & that covers you on Stagecoach buses as far south as Edinburgh & Glasgow!!!!
I know, I once did Aberdeen to Edniburgh travelling on the X7 to Dundee, another Xsomething to Glenrothes, then another Xsometing to Edinburgh with that ticket
Cheers Chris. Yes I’m going to look at day tickets next time I’m up there. I had a fixed schedule this time but yep agree, the day ranger would be best if I was doing multiple journeys.
Another great video, with Scotland looking great, and the trip was cheap, so the Scots can only complain about you calling Arbroath Smokie a kipper ....lol. I only went to Dundee once, it was a New Years eve on a Sunday, and it was closed!
That’s it Fraser, thanks. I couldn’t quite remember but yep, had a great chat with who I presume are the Canine Crew (well the human members obviously). Think it’s a really good idea and I hope to see them again sometime soon.
Another fantastic one 👏🏽 As for CityLink suggestions, I'd say either Glasgow to Fort William, Fort William to Inverness or Inverness to Ullapool ... or hey, why not do it south to north as one long vlog? 😉
As a stagecoach mechanic (not up north) the issue with the usb is there is no indicators when inspecting to see if they’re functional or not, and there isn’t the time, or equipment to test each one individually. Not great on a journey like this, more of a minor annoyance while around town
Yep, no biggie for me. Worth mentioning in the video though I believe it may be down to the driver not switching them on (see Cameron’ comment). I’ll ask them if it happens again.
@@LetsMakeaTrip it's fine, it's not as if we do not know where you are coming from! Hope to see you visit us again and hopefully you will discover the Arbroath Charm ;)
Thank you for showing me my hame Sasanach. I felt so hame sick looking at my old stamping ground of Dundee and Arbroath. I almost choked when you referred to the Arbroath Smokie as a kipper. I could not control the expletives that gushed out of my mouth when you said that. I'll forgive you however. I remember when in Scotland back in 2001 which was the last time I got to travel, I had a photo taken of maself exactly where yo uwere standing on the port side of Captain SCOTT's ship Discovery. So many guid memories! Many thanks for the sentimental journey.
Hi Angus, cheers mate. Yep, sorry about the kippers thing, I’m just trying to ‘encourage some engagement’! Loved Dundee btw but it was so blimmin cold! I’ll have to go back one day - need to try the airport. All the best 😊👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip Hello Mark. Seriously. I loved your video my friend. I was joking about the Smokies v Kippers. I don't care so long as they taste like Smokies 😅. I'am sure you have tugged at the heart strings of most Scots and expatriate Scots. Please keep these videos coming. I'd love to see some footage of the Isle of Skye again. Safe travels my friend. Slàinte mhath!
They seem to go off when the reading lights are switched off, I did ask a driver once on the X7 but he was honest and said he didn’t know what all the buttons do and didn’t want to play around with them! Lol
The middle seat at the back of the coach has a 3 point seat belt because these are exposed seats. Nothing to stop you rolling down the aisle if the driver has to brake hard
@Let’s Make a Trip! The funny thing is, though, I have driven plaxton interdeckers, and stagecoach seems to be the only company that specifies 3 + 1 seats at the front.
Lovely looking part of the country I've yet to visit. Cheers Mark, for another great video.

A very scenic Scottish coastal one is Scrabster to Inverness down the east coast.I don't think that it runs from Scrabster anymore and you have to walk into Thurso but it's only about 2km.When I did it years ago it was run by Scottish City Link.
Watch this space! Vid will be up in the next month 😊👍
If you are lucky you might see Steve Marsh in Montrose.
I didn’t this time but I felt his presence for sure!
Great video, Arbroath is indeed the closest football ground to the sea in the UK, I was lucky enough to go there for a game about a month ago and even tried the famous Smokie
Cheers Dan. I bet you can get some bleak old games in the depths of winter! If I ever go back, I’ll be sure to take in a match (and a Smokie)!
I have a mate who is a Montrose fan and he said many years ago he went to an Arbroath Montrose game during the winter on a windy day and whilst watching the game he got soaked with sea water………..sounded like a lovely day out!
Yes Pax is a Utonagan. Breed to keep the wolflike look of the 3 breeds they were bred from. Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies and German Shepard's.
Cheers Paul, glad you were able to provide the details. Lovely dog too. All the best 😊👍
Arbroath actually almost got promoted to the Premier League last season. Would have been a real fairytale.
I bet. Can just see the home games Vs Celtic/Rangers being a challenge!
Looked a great trip
It was, cheers Steve 👍
Thank you just subscribed and enjoyed video
Appreciate your sub Roberto and many thanks for commenting 😊👍
Very nice trip, Mark. Cheers.
Cheers Jim, thanks for the comment 😊👍
Great trip. Huge bus, suitable for passenger and courier operation to be honest.
Thanks mate - yep decent bus this 👍
Nice scenery.
Cheers Kevin, I agree 👍
You did well catching one of the few remaining coaches in X7 Coastrider livery - as they are all being phased out into the Yellow Distance livery
Also worth pointing out a Day Ticket is £11.00 (50p more than the single journey you paid) & that covers you on Stagecoach buses as far south as Edinburgh & Glasgow!!!!
I know, I once did Aberdeen to Edniburgh travelling on the X7 to Dundee, another Xsomething to Glenrothes, then another Xsometing to Edinburgh with that ticket
Cheers Chris. Yes I’m going to look at day tickets next time I’m up there. I had a fixed schedule this time but yep agree, the day ranger would be best if I was doing multiple journeys.
should take the citylink bus from edinhurgh bus station to glasgow buchanan bus station
Yep, that’s definitely an option Maxwell, cheers 😊👍
Try the citylink bus from Glasgow to Portree
Yes that is on my radar 😊👍
Another great video, with Scotland looking great, and the trip was cheap, so the Scots can only complain about you calling Arbroath Smokie a kipper ....lol. I only went to Dundee once, it was a New Years eve on a Sunday, and it was closed!
Dundee was closed lol, tell you what it was freezing when I was there. Beautiful city though, will definitely go back 👍
Hi, yes Pax is a Utonagan and a member of the Canine Crew, the UK'S first airport therapy dog team.
That’s it Fraser, thanks. I couldn’t quite remember but yep, had a great chat with who I presume are the Canine Crew (well the human members obviously). Think it’s a really good idea and I hope to see them again sometime soon.
Fun fact. That coach started life, brand new, as the X74 running between Glasgow and Dumfries.
I thought these have been on the x7 since new, the ones from x74 are in citylink livery and on m92 route
The ones with the reg that starts with YX65 are the ones from Dumfries.
Another fantastic one 👏🏽
As for CityLink suggestions, I'd say either Glasgow to Fort William, Fort William to Inverness or Inverness to Ullapool ... or hey, why not do it south to north as one long vlog? 😉
Glasgow to Uig... now that's some journey
Cheers both, yep the Glasgow to Uig trip is one I’ve looked at in the past 😊👍
As a stagecoach mechanic (not up north) the issue with the usb is there is no indicators when inspecting to see if they’re functional or not, and there isn’t the time, or equipment to test each one individually. Not great on a journey like this, more of a minor annoyance while around town
Yep, no biggie for me. Worth mentioning in the video though I believe it may be down to the driver not switching them on (see Cameron’ comment). I’ll ask them if it happens again.
Arbroath man here, insulted by your comments but shall overlook them ;) my friend drives the X7 and I'm dissapointed you never got him as your driver
Cheers mate, sorry about that. I’ll come back one day and maybe go to the football 👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip it's fine, it's not as if we do not know where you are coming from! Hope to see you visit us again and hopefully you will discover the Arbroath Charm ;)
Still reccomend the 'Land End Coaster' Spectacualr run for only £5!
I’ve just got to get down there Ashley. I will, but may be a while tbh 😊
It was delightful to see my beloved Scotland again. There is an old saying. You can take the boy out off Scotland but you will NEVER take Scotland out of the Boy! I'am sure you have tugged at the heart strings of most Scots and expatriate Scots. Please keep these videos coming. I'd love to see some footage of the Isle of Skye again. Safe travels my friend. Slàinte mhath!
@@LetsMakeaTrip PS: Dundee is never cold LOL. Cold is when the tyres of your car freeze to the road !!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
Enjoyed 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇💝💝💝💝💝💝👩✈️👩✈️👩✈️👩✈️👩✈️👩✈️
Cheers 🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🥂☕️☕️☕️
As a former Aberdeen resident that seems an odd route of Aberdeen via Union Street.
yes but then the X7 picks up most passengers from Union Street and Holburn Junction
Why didn't you ask the driver about the USB power socket. Maybe, he had switched the power off or a fuse failed. Nice video.
They seem to go off when the reading lights are switched off, I did ask a driver once on the X7 but he was honest and said he didn’t know what all the buttons do and didn’t want to play around with them! Lol
Cameron reckons the driver needs to flick the switch in the cab and that’s all it needs. I’ll ask if I get the same issue again 😊👍
Have you done X5 - Bedford to Oxford
I haven’t, no. Sell it to me! 😊
does it have air-con?
I would presume so. Temperature was fine for my trip, no issues at all.
😮😂😊😅😊😮😮😅😮
Is the £2 bus fare not included in Scotland?
Unfortunately not.
Hi why do u do a megabus from BAIRMINGHAM TO LONDON
I’ve done that Joshua on one of my earlier videos (down to Heathrow) 👍
Why no concession travel.
No what I meant Alan was my ticket was a standard adult single with no concessions used. I’m sure if you qualified you could get a reduced fare. 😊👍
why not £2 for the ticket 🧐
It’s not a thing in Scotland.
@@LetsMakeaTrip oh really thanks for that information
The middle seat at the back of the coach has a 3 point seat belt because these are exposed seats. Nothing to stop you rolling down the aisle if the driver has to brake hard
Yep, thought as much. There were a couple on the seats at the top of the stairs too 👍
@Let’s Make a Trip! The funny thing is, though, I have driven plaxton interdeckers, and stagecoach seems to be the only company that specifies 3 + 1 seats at the front.
Montrose - and also home to world famous CZcams star @stevemarsh 😉
True fact! And a very nice chap too, he will normally comment on my stuff if you scroll through to find it.
