91. Storm Ciara Batters Narrowboat Marina
Vložit

- I have an unsettled night on the eve of Storm Ciara, the boat is being rocked, the canopy is flapping in the wind and it’s difficult to sleep. The next morning rain lashes down and there are wind gusts of 50mph and upwards.

Cheese roll and a cup of hot tea - calm all sorts of nasty storms.
I love the way he’s always smiling, Ah the simple life, if only if only people realised acquisitions makes slaves of us all.
Great video Alan, you captured the storm brilliantly and all ended well with a cheese topped roll and a nice cup of tea. Pure comfort food. Lovely
Fran x
Many thanks Fran, hope all well with you both. I did watch Stir Crazy, whilst I was away but can't recall if I commented. Take care Alan x

WOW!... Then braving that storm.... happy you returned when you did...and enjoyed your favorite treat.....short but sweet vlog. Thanks Alan as always...Cheers! 😊
Thanks Susan, that's an old one you've watched, I was trying to capture the mood of the storm. Thanks for your lovely comment. Take care x
You done very well to record as much as you have. You are most cheerful and uplifting to listen to.
Best wishes.
Thanks very much William, kind of you to say so. Cheers.
All snug in your narrow boat whilst bobbing about in the safety of a marina. Then the sun won the battle and restored beauty and calm. Thanks for the stormy adventure. 🏆
Hi Carole, this is an old one now, I'm glad you enjoyed watching. All the best
@@MyNarrowboatVenture It seems to have no age. 😏
@@carolehayden8566 You're probably right, cheers.
@@MyNarrowboatVenture Being right is the only thing I do right 😃 Cheers back.
Thanks Alan, our boat is not far from you at Dunchurch but, luckily fellow boaters have sent short film clip and regularly update on the conditions as we live 190 miles away in South Wales, we now know fully how bad it was your video was a great help
Hi Brian, it's good that you've got someone keeping any eye on your boat and I'm pleased my film gave you an idea of what it was like yesterday. All the best Alan
Always Smiling 😀👍
That was a blast!
Well that Storm is a definite contrast to your bright, shining smile!
Stay safe and warm.
Many thanks Michelle, that's from a couple of years ago but we've had very similar weather recently. Take care.
Thanks Alan, for the reply. I realized that it was older after I read more comments. I'm sure you're still smiling through the current ones as well. ☔
@@michellec8273 I sure am, no point in getting down about the weather!
Gosh when I mentioned in a previous comment about the marina being exposed I didn’t imagine that😁. I love the fact that you went for a walk in it, I bet it was exhilarating. I love walking with my dog on our local beach when there is a gale blowing, reminds you that you’re alive😁
I enjoy watching and hearing stormy weather and felt it would be a good topic for a vlog, so ventured out into it. Cheers
What an experience..! Don’t know how our boat got buffeted about in our marina, we’ll be up to find out soon. Glad you came through with just a poor night’s sleep and a soggy pair of shoes...! Stay safe and warm Alan..🍷🍷
Thanks Steve. I hope you find all well with your boat. Likewise take care and keep warm. Cheers Alan
It’s like that here today in Gosford Australia....dark misty and raining hard....so I thought I might watch this again while I have a cuppa.
Hi Greg, enjoyment from watching second time around, that's good to hear. We're getting some summer here, but it's variable from one day to another. We had a smashing May though, when we couldn't really enjoy it. I gather Winter in Australia varies depending on where you are in the country. All the best Alan
I also watched the trip to market harborough again too.....I think that it’s the atmosphere of peace and your gentle spirit that makes the videos so relaxing!
You did the best you possibly could with all that rain and wind Alan, we’ll done 👍
Many thanks, best wishes Alan
I know this sounds daft but being on a canal boat in a storm would be very relaxing, as long as there’s a nice brew and some nice food I’d be happy, and also you always keep smiling which is nice, keep the vids comming 👍
Many thanks Ben, I've often thought a boat is a good place to be in a storm, particularly if its tied off and secure. All the best Alan
One of the best things about being out in raging stormy weather is getting back inside again, with all the cobwebs removed.
Couldn't agree more, cheers Alan.
Reminded me of family holidays in caravans, It always seemed to rain when we went away.
Stay safe.
It's worse in a tent though! All the best, take care. Alan
Wow what a horrible day for all of you boater , good video Alan most interesting thank,John 🥃🥃🥃🥃
Thanks John. I thought it would be a good idea to have a record of what it was like in the marina. All the best, keep warm. Alan
What a lovely guy looked nice and cosy in there nice vid well done
That's very kind of you to say, thank you so much.
Nice job Alan really interesting to see how the storm was from a boaters point of view, keep safe, and all the best to you!
Many thanks Chris, best wishes Alan
What’s there not to like mate cup of rosy lee and a cheese cob. You looked toasty enough in lazy daze though and I got a hat like yours for Christmas and is really toasty on my 5am morning walks .
Sir, even with the bad weather you have let us see, I would still like to say that you are living my dream.
Nice looking Marina, Thx for sharing!
Thank you for filming this showing the bad weather as well as the good. This is so rarely shown by CZcamsrs. Keep warm and dry and well fed (cheese roll and a cup of Yorkshire tea)
Thanks for your appreciation Keith. Hope all well. Cheers Alan
Waves on the marina and on the canal! Enjoyed the vlog thanks, couldn't help thinking how cosy it must have been in the boat looking out at the storm. 😊
You're quite right Sally, it's lovely and cosy aboard and the best place to be when it's stormy. I'm glad you liked the vlog. All the best.
I'm accustomed to hurricanes here in eastern North Carolina in the U.S. I know what you're talking about sir. Glad you got through it safely. Tis always nice to watch your vlogs you're so warm and inviting every time! I like being greeted by your happy smiling face in each vlog....makes my day!
Hi Martha, thank you for your very kind comments, I hope you're not suffering any bad weather at the moment. All the best Alan
This is possibly the among best storm coverage from a narrowboat I’ve yet seen! Thanks for taking the time and risk to go outside in the storm to get some coverage. I’ve kind of always wondered what it is like on a Narrowboat during a storm. Perhaps a shot of the horizon would have given us a sense of the rocking motion of the boat. Capitan Gary Phillips on ChugABug showed some of the storm as well. He has a U-Tube channel as well. I like you VLOGs very much! Thank-You for all the work you do to produce these VLOGs! Mark from Colorado USA 🇺🇸
Hi Mark, that's very kind of you to say so, your comment is much appreciated. Many thanks for your support and encouragement. Keep safe. Cheers Alan
Very good Alan and i'm glad you survived the storm :-)
I enjoyed seeing that thank you!
Thanks a very good update.
It was rough too in London and very noisy last night.
A nice cuppa and a cheese roll sounds like a wonderful remedy to the inclement weather we are all enduring
Many thanks, hope you've not had any problems with the weather. Cheers Alan
You did a good job in giving us a flavour of the storm...I had lots of damage, but only to fence panels and posts etc, so easily fixed.
I'm sorry to hear of your damage and hope you get your fencing fixed without too much trouble. Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture Thankyou. Many had it far worse. A few new panels and it'll be like it never happened...thankyou.
Thank you for sharing. Keep safe.
Great video albeit stormy and wet. You looked right cozy in there. Goodness, do you smile all the time. Great look. lol
Thanks very much Gerry, people do comment on me smiling, it's not something I'd ever thought about it. Cheers Alan
That was a brave walk Alan.
I think the sleepless night was just about the same for everyone. I live in a static mobile home and the rain bounces off my roof to the same tune as yours. I also cycled two miles in a squall yesterday to give blood. Just please take care out there, but it was good to see what its like in your neck of the (very wet) woods.
Many thanks Frank, we all need to take care when venturing out, particularly if you're on your bike, that couldn't have been easy for you but thanks for doing what you did. Cheers Alan
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Batten down the hatches and put the kettle on - glad to know that you were safe and warm sending regards 👏❤️😁xxxx
Many thanks, I've done just that. All the best Alan.
Nice day, you got a decent walk in, a double cheese sandwich, roof wash, and a sunset!
Couldn't be better, the way you put it. All the best Alan
What a day that was roll on the warmer drier weather keep warm matey. Alan.
Thanks Alan, will do and you. Can't be too long now for the better weather. Take care. Cheers Alan
I’m off to visit my boat later this week..... 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
We could hear the strength of that wind and rain very well!👍🏻 the sun was beautiful
Thanks Debbie, there was a calm at the end of the day but it then blew up again. All the very best Alan.
Alan you tease, loving the weather report from your bunk - more! Gonna put you forward for the Boat Tubers Calendar photoshoot. As always enjoyed your vlog
Many thanks, which month would you like me to be! 🤔
@@MyNarrowboatVenture Actually think you'd rock that beard for every month so you'll have to produce your own My Narrowboat Venture calendar for your discerning fans like me xx
Hi Tania. You’re so kind, sounds as though I’d sell at least one copy! 🙄x
Thank you for this video....I always wonder what happens to you folks that live on the boats...glad all is well. Can’t beat a nice cup of Tea with a cheese top roll whilst snuggled in your narrow boat when the storms howling outside...just lovely.
Many thanks, glad you liked the video. All the best Alan
Yes i enjoyed it!
Well done. There is very little video about winter narrow boating. I do like extremes of weather. Terry
I just found your channel and I'm really enjoying watching. I once dreamt of living on the cut but it never happened.
Hi and welcome aboard, good to have you along. I hope you enjoy looking through my back catalogue of videos, I try and give some variation. Cheers Alan
That rain was intense. Interesting to see what the storm was like for you. Smiling in the rain.
Nice and cosy inside. All the good days must make up for days like that. :)
Couldn't agree more but I like to see some rough weather now and again. Cheers
Cheese roll and cup of tea... the answer to all inconveniences😀
A Cheese roll with cheese, CruisingTheCut might be getting ideas
well done you......not for me thats for sure but I thank you for sharing this experience. Nice ending.
Many thanks. Cheers
why do people dislike this? This fellow is a good man and is telling us his story.
Thanks for your support. I've never understood why there is a thumbs down sign, seems so unnecessary. All the best Alan
It’s pure jealousy, he’s happy and their not. So sod em.
Nice one Alan,...up all night with storm's is a small price to pay, for the freedom we have...
Bless you... keep warm mate .. Wayne (motorhome lifer)
Many thanks Wayne and happy motoring. Cheers Alan
Thanks Alan for the interesting vlog I‘ve had the same experience with my hubby years ago I now live in Switzerland and we had very strong winds yesterday with falling trees everywhere but lucky we havent had the floods takecare
Hi Anne, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sounds as though you've had a narrowboat in the past. Several trees have fallen across the canals and I've seen pictures of a narrowboat 'beached' on the towpath! Best wishes Alan
Alan some storm love your boat
Thank you, good blog and really interesting to see how you boaters faired in the awful weather. Quite bad hey but really cosy in the boat...I'm looking for my first boat. Good luck :-)
Thanks very much Leigh. I hope you find the boat you're looking for and have many years of happy boating. All the best Alan
Leigh Stephenson jealous! Some day, I’d love to retire and at least rent a canal narrowboat for 6 mos or however long they’d allow me to live in Britain.👍🏼👍🏼
Smiling all the way 😁👍
Hi Alan
You are a braver man than me walking in that storm hope everything was ok after storm
Stay safe
Hi Ron, all is well thanks. Cheers Alan
My son lives on a cruiser, whilst in the summer it can be a good life the winter can be tough. It's not all plain sailing and a lot of work is needed. I really enjoyed your video. Wishing you all the best :D
Thank you very much Sally, I hope all is well with your son during this bad weather. Cheers Alan
Love the contrast between n the storm outside and the peace inside. Ciara seems to be missing us in Aberdeenshire. I hope I haven't spoken too soon. Driving back home to Central Scotland midweek and I think they are having snow . All the best.
Hi Christine. It's certainly very nice to be snug inside, with the fire on the go. I hope your journey home goes well and you don't meet any unexpected weather. Take care Alan
Hope Storm Dennis isn't as bad arriving this weekend
Felt like being out on the open sea on a narrow boat lol, more tonight Alan
Hi Lennie. Was certainly getting battered about. We had some snow earlier, short lived but heavy for a period. Batten down again tonight! All the best
@@MyNarrowboatVenture snow, oh no ☹😂
Hi Alan thanks for the view of the storm you are a brave man to go for a walk around in it if it was me I would be sitting near the fire keeping warm Sydney had 4 days of heavy rain and it was the total rain fall they would have in a year as it caused power cuts and flooding stay safe and happy and safe boating cheers Barry Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
There is no doubt the weather does some weird things, too hot, too cold, too dry, too wet. There's been a lot of flooding over here and in areas where flood relief schemes have been put in place and seemingly not worked! In the cosy cabin is definitely the best place to be. Happy motoring, I assume you move around a lot or is that not the case. All the best Alan
Agree stay inside, have tea and a cheese roll while listening to the storm outside. We had severe weather here in the US mid week. I’m going to post a video of it soon on my channel Memaw’s Matters. We had crazy waves at a jetty/inlet near to where we are staying and saw dolphins going up a tidal river
Hi Debbie, that's definitely the right thing to do. I'll take a look at your channel, thanks for mentioning it. We had a little snow this afternoon, which I wasn't expecting. Take care
My Narrowboat Venture I will also subscribe to you from my Memaw’s Matters channel in addition to this channel
At the point you went walkies you could sense the strength of the wind. Yep cheese roll cup of tea, life improves. Really bad all saturday and sunday here in Hampshire hope Juliana is ok in Gayton Marina will check next week.
Hi Vivienne. I hope you find all well with your boat. We had some snow this afternoon. Cheers Alan
and you will be enjoying snow in a few days.would love to be there on a narrow boat and keeping warm by the fire.keep safe and keep smiling.
We had some snow today actually, which was unexpected at the time. The fire certainly keeps the boat cosy. Cheers

Top drawer Alan. I think you are the only boat tuber to point a lens at it and press the record button. Well done.
Thanks Greg, it's not easy filming in the rain, as not only does your camera get wet, it doesn't want to focus either. I actually hung it up over the stove to warm it through! Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture A good move to stop the lens from fogging up.
All that wind is making me feel cold and I'm in my front room with the convenience of central heating. I might have to join you and have a cheese roll and cup of tea too...two sugars please:)
That's the way to do it, can't beat a cuppa and cheese roll. Thanks for watching.
Good to see you got through it OK mate, there's been some terrible videos on here of the floods and damage. I wouldn't worry about hearing you voice I could hardly hear myself think when I popped over the shops yesterday lol
Thanks John. There's certainly been some horrendous flooding and damage, people are suffering a great deal, even where flood defences have been built. It really is very shocking.
Oh man, I would sleep through the night and well into the next day
Looked like the sea not the canal, take care and thanks, have another brew .
Hi Robert, that's a good idea, can't go wrong with a cuppa, especially Betty's, which I'm using sparingly thanks to make them last longer. Cheers
What a great video, i was wondering how storm ciara would be on a narrow. And what a great possitive vibe you got!
Many thanks, glad you liked it.
Alan, couldn't help but notice that you were the only boat captain out checking the marina. Do you suppose the others were peeking out their windows saying; "Who's that crazy bloke taking a stroll in the middle of the storm?". Of course they may not know that you have about 2,500 subscribers who were waiting on CZcams for this video to appear... Good Work! 😉👍
I think you're right Gilbert but to be fair, the Marina Manager did take a stroll around to check that all was well and later with help, he secured the boat that had lost one of its moorings. Thanks for your kind remark. Cheers
And a big storm it was, all the way through here as well, I'm from the Netherlands and it came bucketing down here most of the day. I'll have a cup of tea that will sort it!
Thanks for watching and welcome aboard. Tea always puts things right. Blowing up again here, as I write this in the evening. Cheers Alan
Not to minimize the storm there, but that is about like the tropical storms we have here in Florida all too often. Stay safe Alan!
Hi Zach. There's been a lot of flooding again over here and in areas where much work has been done to stop it happening! It's becoming more and more common unfortunately. Hope all well with you. Cheers
A bit like Tasmanian weather... the wind only slows down to change direction... Take care.
looks like the type of day to sit beside a fire and read a good book
Please stay safe Alan 💧💧💧☔⛅🌞!
Thanks Vicki, cheers.
I’d be having a nice Manhattan on the rocks with Makers and a cherry! The heck with tea! 🤓🥃
Well apparently mad dogs and Englishmen go out in hurricanes as well. 😉 it's 11pm and seeing that cuppa now is the only thing I I can think of. Too late, would never sleep.🙃
I just caught up with the fact that Storm Ciara produced the highest ever recorded wind speed in the UK at 98 mph. And, there is another storm coming later on in the week which just as powerful. You wouldn't want to be tied up to mooring pegs in those conditions.
Thanks Greg, I hadn't realised that, better batten down again. Cheers

at least your still smiling
Now I would take that roll, slice it, whack in it a beef patty (yes, grilled...), a slice of tomato and of onion and maybe a bit of hot sauce... and a couple of slices of Swiss cheese. My Cardiologist just woke up in a cold sweat...
Each to his own, all the best Stephen, thanks for watching.
I'm glad we live in a warm climate (Fuerteventura). It should be a lot calmer and drier when we're on our hire boat in July/August.
Let's hope so, we had some snow this afternoon, quite heavy for a while and then gone. Cheers
The luxury of the marina you floaters are spoilt not like us hard core boaters out on the rivers🤣🤣🤣🤣🍻🍻
Hi Alan I bet that wind blew out the cobwebs trust you had no damage .Cheers
Hi Ramsey. I didn't have any damage but various items on other boats and around the marina have relocated themselves or got lost. All the best.
I sleep in an attic bedroom and get scary, wild noises when there is a storm outside - a bit similar to what we're hearing on this video!
Stay safe it's not over yet
I would probably have taken the pram hood down for fear it would be ripped off. Nice to see they are a bit more robust than I thought.
Although it flaps about a lot, it is fairly secure.
Being female I would be very nervous on a canal boat in that sort of weather...where is the Marina that you are on Alan? BRRRR that weather looks so cold.... yet in the Summer I bet it's so beautiful...thanks for sharing, I love narrow boats...my friend has a Wide beam....they are so beautiful...😁😁
Hi Monnie, I'm based at Yelvertoft on the Leicester Arm of the Grand Union, it's an idyllic spot, more so in the Summer. The boat has taken a lot of buffeting in recent winds, which can be noisy when trying to sleep. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this Alan, re-assuring to not see Water Lily drifting across the marina! I've got to say, with that hat on you could pass for Dave Lee Travis!
Thanks Rob, I've got a feeling you're not the first to suggest that. The ash bin on my jetty has completely disappeared and I found an extra life buoy, so items did move around and some boats lost things where not fastened down.
@@MyNarrowboatVenture keep that buoy just in case it was ours... it was held down with a coal bag but looking at the wind I'm not sure it would hold! Rob
@@robtheplod Hi Rob. The lifebuoy was the same as the Marina ones and Tony the groundsman collected it. Does that sound like yours?
Even in bed your beard is neat! Mine doesn't look so good even after a shower and a comb! Bravo Sir!
Just as well moored up, Grim weather wasn't it, and still breezy today. Springtime not far away now, something to look forward to.
Hi Dan, it certainly wasn't a day for cruising yesterday! Had some snow earlier, quite heavy but short lived. Blowing up again now. Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture Good Luck.
Just glad we’re not on our boat, looks awful, stay safe 😊
Thanks Sue. Various items from boats and from around the marina have relocated themselves and the ash bin I use has completely disappeared! Cheers
My Narrowboat Venture oh dear hope it’s calmed down now, we’ve just had a snow shower luckily it’s fine here 😊
Hi Sue. We also had snow here this afternoon, quite heavy but short lived. It’s quite windy tonight💨
Just a wee bit of rain and wind, laddy.
If I knew you was going out Alan you could have took the pup lol
He certainly looks a bundle of fun, fluffy too! Cheers
What a bad storm I noticed your narrowboat is blue what is your favorite color
It was blue when I bought it and blue is my favourite colour.
Our intrepid explorer. I wonder how many boats came loose from their moorings and floated away? I’m feeling lucky on Morecambe Bay, some haven’t been so lucky round a bout.
I'm sure nationwide there would be quite a few but just the one broken mooring here, that I was aware of. Doesn't it get quite rough in the Bay, must be difficult for some.
My Narrowboat Venture it does and it was fairly choppy, but we have had it as bad and worse with out it being flagged up as a super storm. In fact it’s windier today than yesterday.
Don't worry though, nothing to stop my neighbour putting his bin out the night before.....
Plenty of life in them shoes
They must be 20 plus years old, holed at the bottom and now the soles have parted company with the shoes. Already binned!
We are in a Low sunspot period and have been for a few years and 2030 could be the lowest year, so best get used to this sort of weather. Luckily we don't live in Mexico as they had four foot of hail in one night. Some are also suffering from the increase in Volcanic and Tectonic plate activity. If you get a chance read the science papers on the umbrella effect that can be part of low sunspot periods weather.
That sounds interesting but science is not my strong point, so doubt it would mean much to me. Thanks for the suggestion though.
@@MyNarrowboatVenture You look too happy in your present world, and I'm sure I would be too. Sadly on noticing I had a local canal, I soon noticed it has many low bridges, many fallen trees in it, and a tunnel that only a canoe can fit through and I think there isn't enough room in it to paddle. Shortly after squeezing through that it comes to a dead end. A perfect avenue of trees carries on without it, and any chance of a voyage is lost.
I still don't understand how its been called The Grand Western, it's maybe a quest that was never finished.
spex357 The Grand Western ran between Taunton, Somerset and Tiverton, Devon but the Somerset side has pretty much disappeared although there are pockets where short stretches remain. As you probably know, there are horse drawn leisure boats out of the Tiverton basin. Cheers
