  • Released as an Xbox One launch title, Forza Motorsport 5 received middling reception from fans. Nowadays it's generally agreed to be the worst in the series, but does it deserve that label? Just how bad is Forza Motorsport 5 really?

This game was the perfect advert for where many AAA games would go from that generation onwards, graphics + technical stuff get all the priority while the actual most important thing in any game (content) is little more than an afterthought.
It's not a bad game but the easiest way to sum it up is with a question....
Is FM5 how you would imagine the masterpiece of FM4 plus next gen technology turning out?
I think we all know the answer to that, and in my opinion that applies to all 3 Xbox One era FM's.

I had less of a problem with the lower car count than I did with the new lame career system. I half excused 5 for being a quick launch title and redesign of all the cars and tracks, but 6 and 7 did the same thing and both still suck. Now Forza 8 has been in development for years, it's been delayed, the new console has been out for a while, and the graphical fidelity of the past 3 games were good enough that 8 is going to get massive backlash if they do the same shit again.

I definitely expected better from FM5 but honestly, it's far from a REALLY bad racing game, imo. You can say that the FM series took steps further and experimented more (sometimes it was good, other times not as great) until FM4 (which is probably [one of, if not] the best racing game imo). However, FM5 was when the series downgraded over time and i really hope FM8 brings back the series and doesn't deteriorate further from ingame content.

now fm8 seems to be headed the same direction. all we know about it so far is "ooooooo shiny graphics", and "look we're virtue signalling!" (not that i'm against accessibility options, but that is not something you should focus your marketing, specially before saying anything at all about the game itself). it's probably going to suck, too. they have their heads too far up their arses to realize people want a good game, not a good-looking game. forza peaked at fm4 + fh1 (even though my favorite horizon is fh3)

I’ve seen a lot of videos of people talking about how disappointed they were back when FM5 came out for the lack of Porsche and slower cars, but I always saw this game as the spiritual and Xbox One flagship title as PGR3 was to the 360. That game also lacked a big car list, but I really appreciated the cars in that game that I’ve never seen in others. For $60, I can see it as disappointing, but for $20, 10 years later, it’s still a great game.

Unpopular opinion here but fm5 was my favorite game in the series outside fh2. It wasn’t objectively the best game in the series but for me, just being able to play online with an at the time huge community that was so diverse was what truly awe struck me. I have 100s of videos on my Xbox captures of me and a few of my old friends just spending hours upon hours goofing off and really pushing the game to its limits playing tag virus. Then once the game started to die I set my eyes on getting top 100 on each track in each class (except x cuz I hate f1 cars in forza games). Overall this game brought me the most fun and I met most of my friends through it so I owe a lot to fm5 even if it wasn’t the greatest in the franchise and I’m just glad I was around when it was first released just to experience it in its prime.

I think you just about hit the nail on the head there and found out by the end all the things wrong with it. A lot of people that absolutely loved FM4 and the installments before it felt like they had been betrayed and left out. This game not only cut half the cars, but they also cut out half the tracks including a lot of fan favourites like Maple Valley and Fujimi Kaido. A lot of the customisation options were also gone and when added together with everything else, it just felt like half a game. What's even worse is the content of what was left, was just recycled content from FM4. Aside from the graphics and as you pointed out the trackside atmosphere, there really wasn't anything new that added to the gameplay at all and in many ways it felt like a downgrade.
It was also the first installment to really push and incentivise using supercars and hypercars rather than taking a shitbox and customising the shit out of it to make it competitive. This removed a lot of what makes Forza fun and the only way I can describe it is like the difference between working for a small time circa~50employee company compared to a global enterprise company. FM5 felt a lot like a corporate suit and tie game whereas the previous installment felt like the freedom and flexibility you get working for a small time company that understands and 'gets' you. FM5 is the game that made me jump ship from the Forza franchise and move on over to Assetto Corsa for the PC and actually I'm glad I did as it only started to get better with FM7, but they also took away the biggest thing that made FM4 enjoyable for online play - the abilitiy to make custom public lobbies so even that's flawed.

I started with FM3 and have played every game in the Motorsport series since. Fm4 and subsequently Fm5 are the reason I bought an xbox one in the first place.
After putting hundreds if not a couple thousand hours into fm4, and playing Fm5 until Fm6 came out, here are my thoughts.
Fm4 was a masterpiece. Turn 10 release what might possibly be the most difficult arcade-sim in existance. Phenominal track selection, very upgraded graphics over FM3, 660 cars and many of which were unique, interesting cars and brands I had never heard before as a kid like Ascari, Morgan and De Tomaso. It not only had legendary real life tracks (including the old silveretone layout) it also had great fictional circuits like Maple Valley, Camino Vaiejo (probably spelled that way wrong) and Fujimo Kaido. The Autovista was brand new, doing challenges to unlock the ability to explore cars as if we could in real life was amazing, and in a way really unique since they didn't do it for every car, each one had a reason and a personality for being there. The main campaign was really good too, even though it was the same basic progression of a Forza game they put the races on calendar dates thet made it feel like you were actually running in a championship day by day. You could upgrade any car within a "car type," to any PI you wanted, or race in events that were completely open to any car as long as you met a competetive performance index and didn't exceed the max. The online is rrally where FM4 shined though and thats the biggest killer for FM5. Fm4's online was unbeatable, like no other I've experienced before or after. Forza is usually about circuit racing online but if you look beyond that FM4 had the best Forza online ever, and I dont think it was intentional. The club system was amazing, giving you a hub of friends or drivers to host lobbies with, send easy invites to events and even share cars. Clubs have never been as good as they have in FM4 in any game after it. But beyond that even, there was just so much to do in the community. I remember it would be things like ym close friends and I taking cars to Fujimi Kaido and setting them in Reverse and rolling down the hill like a soap-box derby. We would do demolitoon derbies on the Sebring back straight grass with sim damage turned on. We would go to Le Mans and get a Saleen S7 stuck in the ground and start launching Bugatti Veyrons the length of the Mulsanne Straight. And outside ofnyour friend group there were car shows, cruises, party games on the test track, there was just so much we could do besides racing. I played 5 years of FM4 and I hardly ever cared about winning a race, I was always just having fun with my friends.
FM4 has so many other great features I wont go into detail about, but will list:
    Topgear
    Soccer
    Test Track
    easy, Open Online lobbies
Buying paint jobs on the storefront instead of throwing designs in our face as soon as we buy the car.
    Split screen
    Better affinity system
    Profiles/badges
Changeable main menu setting including the Topgear studio
    +Many more
On the contrary, FM5... Is a solid game compared to FM4. Obviously the graphics and physics got a massive uograde from previous which was really cool to see. I loved seeing all the aero stuff wiggle and vibrate under high speed. The garage was really nice and the Topgear crew returning was really cool. I did like some of the new tracks but their airfield test track sucks butt and they didn't have Maple Valley or Fujimi either.
Overall FM5 does a lot of things well, but I believe a number of things killed it.
    Bad progression
The career was too simple and I hate that everything is available from the start. Atleast in FM4 you had to ublock certain series by reaching a certain level. It felt like there was no progression at all beyond buying cars - and at that point you might-aswell find the best way to grind money and just buy all the cars, the racing really didnt feel like it mattered. I think psychologically a part of that is the drivatars. Instead of forming a rivaly against "Simon G." Or "Manuel L." (Which granted are crummy driver names as well) we constantly switch drivatars so one race you could be fighting with xxTentacle69beastXx and the next race its forgotten_Wheelwell1970 instead. It just ruined the immersion for me, especially if you don't turn off "Drivatar designs".
    Low car numbers
Not only did the car roster lack in quantity in FM5, I felt it lacked in quality too massively. It saw a few cool flagship cars like the Mclaren P1 and the Porsche GT3 and Audi Le Mans Prototype cars at the time, but beyond that I didnt feel like there were any "unique" cars that stood out to me from the rest on the car list. Then again, it has been 5 or 6 years since I looked through that car list. The selection that they had was great at beet, good for most and lacking for real enthusiasts. Unfortunately the graphical update kinda forced this, but Xbox should've given Turn 10 more time, or atleast done some large car packs to get the number closer to 500.
    Upgrade system/homoligation
The uograde system is redundant in this game for the career. Absolutely just overlapped by the homoligation system when buying a car. If I remember correctly even from the dealership it asks if you want to homoligate your car to some kind of spec. I also hated it for variety in the races. I can no longer choose to uograde my car if I want to race it, and if I want to race a stock version of that car I am significantly outpaced by drivatars with Homoligation upgrades. So racing cars within the same series felt very samey and the experience was a forced "Lets all be the same so its fair" situation when realistically some of the cars didnt need homoligating. It also considered NOTHING except for engine power, weight and PI, so it was kinda broken.
    Online
Fm5's online was a disaster... It was the first in a very long line of Forza games that just can't nail the online experience like FM4 did. A lot of this is due to the crappy online features of the Xbox One, but it still is important to mention. Xbox's party system became difficult to use and a hassle, simply inviting a friend can sometimes be a ten minute ordeal just finding the button. Friends lists are garbage now, Xbox tried to make their main menu into a facebook feed of everybody so you can "Follow" people without friending them and it serves absolutely no purpose. Xbox drove people away from their online experience and I know a lot of people that literally just kept their Xbox One around to use the Netflix app. All of this bled into FM5's multiplayer with the added bonus of no class-based online racing (at launch) and very finnicky, hard to use lobbies that had awful connection problems and didn't accomodate game chat very well. The community was smaller and therefore there was less to do. Less people hosting events, finding new fun things to do, less friends to meey, hell there was just less people talking in lobbies in general.
Fm5 could have been amazing, but the game before it was an absolute masterpiece so its very hard to give FM5 any wins here. FM 4 will always ALWAYS be my pinnacle of the series for all of these reasons and more. FM5 wasn't bad, it just couldn't live up to the absolute titan that came before it.

Sorry you just missed all 3 new cars for the week and you'll never get them for the next 6 months because they don't even show up in the auction house. And if they do it's a $20,000,000 buyout.
So yes, I would much rather pay a sum once and get all my cars now than be trickle-fed content I wasn't even sure I wanted.
Thats the last point I'll make: atleast with the car packs we knew what was coming before we bought them. Now we are kinda just forced to sit through whatever dribble playground games decides to leak into the car list this month.
I love cars, I love collecting cars, but when collecting all the weekly rewards and trying to afford the ones I missed on the auction house genuinely takes hours to grind when I could instead be habing fun with these cars, or playing something else more worth my time, it makes me not want to play.
I just want to buy cars and drive/race them how I want, not how playground games wants me to.

For me, the worst Forza titles are Motorsport 7 and Horizon 5. Motorsport 5 was my first Forza back in the day. I bought an XBox one especially for it (the big black box). I had heard so many good things about Motorsport 4 that I really wanted to have the next Forza. It was actually a pretty decent game. However, the career mode quickly became a bit monotonous. Just like the two successors, unfortunately. What redeemed Motorsport 5 for me in the end was the voice acting by the Top Gear guys, who I'm still a huge fan of to this day.

Its a shortcut so that newbies didnt have to spec out a car in the upgrade shop to meet the class level for the series. in FM7 its done through Homologaiton spec which is even more strict and makes it not even viable to make custom races with a specific car group and have a higher class PI group.

Massive Props to your Editors for the Mythbusters Segment, that was brilliant :D
The Graphics Showcase Game, unfortunate that this was the series's first foray on the Xbox One gen but as you say its still stunning to look at.
Also the Drivatars were a cool idea but by FM6 it devolved completely into marketing speak, even for FM5 the system wasn't completely functional but it atleast existed. It's likely good that it's not a thing anymore though considering how most people drive against the AI lol.
The Top Gear content is pretty much the main redeeming feature in terms of content alongside some of the new Hypercars. I do really miss that shift in focus though from having the progression from more simple cars to higher end ones. Ever since FM5 you just immediately hopping into something sporty and the progression lost its meaning.
The basic cars were admittedly slow and sometimes tedious but I do prefer the scaling in terms of speed which allowed new players to get used to handling and racing. I often wonder if Online Racing would be less of a Demo Derby if that was still the case instead of being able to buy FM7/FH4/FH5 and getting a free Hypercar in your first 5 mins.
In terms of the games though atleast FH2 on the Xbox One was very solid but this was the beginning of the end of Motorsport taking the spotlight in terms of Forza.
The success of FH3 just further cemented that and put the final nail in Motorsport's Coffin as the premier Forza title.
FM6 was very good though, it's probably my favourite of the Xbox One generation of Motorsport games. FM7 has more content but the Homologation System for upgrades on top of PI is just irritating and very restrictive which makes the very long career even more of a slog. A lot of the extra content there is Off-roaders and stuff which are just a waste of space, FM6 was just a more streamlined experience overall imo.
None can match the earlier titles though unfortunately, one of my biggest regrets is not getting into FM3 and 4 earlier and buying the DLC for them. So many unique and interesting cars are now pretty much lost (in a legitimate manner atleast) and they're unlikely to appear in the series again even in Horizon.

I would say that the fact they were even considering such a system in the first place says everything one needs to know about where T10's priorities are these days. it's no longer about the fans, the graphics, or even the cars -- it's just about money. the soulless, corporate-feeling, clinical nature of the newer Motorsport games exemplifies this. it feels like they have no soul left because they *really do* have no soul left.
the fact they've almost completely torpedoed the loyalty program tells classic Forza fans like myself all they should need to know about Forza's priorities going forward. it's sickening and disheartening.

I still had countless fun hours in Forza Motorsport 5, it had a beautiful, clean feel with its UI and cutscenes, it made it feel fresh and more of an ode to the beauty of racing compared than the silly/chaotic nature of the Horizon games. To me, what this game has over Forza 7 is that it has way better soundtrack, more personality, and way better car sounds, even when you upgrade the exhausts you can hear the sound of the car become louder, try the M3 E46 with stock and then race exhaust.
What I really hated about FM5 is how lackluster it was, to me it felt like the game was rushed and resulted in it just being a graphics showcase for the Xbox One, so many stuff taken off FM4...the custom forza lobbies...the community features that brought the community, and also the DLCs (which was mostly cars that were already present on FM4 but were brought back as DLC again, such as the Ferrari FF), the game had a lot less tracks than fm4 too (at launch this game didn't even have the Nurburgring Nordschleife but was later brought back as DLC around FH2's release), one thing I also hated was how close the chase cam was even when you put it on chase far it doesn't look that great.
Regarding the multiplayer, A lot of the community hated it as well because of how lackluster it was, they introduced the hoppers system where it was like a class of specific themed cars, it didn't have the freedom that fm4 had where you could setup your own lobby with ur own rules and make it public (which is what is called custom forza lobbies).
As someone who played this game on its launch, I still genuinely enjoy it in 2023 simply because of the sounds, soundtrack and also the top gear voiceovers. It definitely could have been a great successor but it really needed more time because transitioning to the new generation with only 1 year to make a next-gen game is not enough, that's why they are taking a lot of time for the upcoming Forza Motorsport this year...but if we compare FM5 to other FM titles...overall it is the worst because like you said it had a lot to be desired, but its still a good game :)

I remember this game being extremely grindy back on release. The most 2 most expensive cars (the Lotus F1 car and the 250 GTO?) were 6 million credits each and the payouts were extremely stingy, something like 10-15K per race. Even the VIP status which was meant to give you more money didn't help much with that. Combine that with the unbalanced token system, and it was almost f2p mobile game level of greed. They later doubled the payouts and reduced the price of the most expensive cars down to 2 mil after community backlash. Huh, which modern racing game does this remind me of...
There was also the lack of my multiplayer features on the 360 era, the massive reduction in cars, tracks and events, no real career mode, no incentive to win races, the drivatars were notoriously aggressive and unfair and had none of the personally of the previous games' AI which were prone to errors in corners. Gameplay and features wise, this game was hot garbage. The only good thing you could praise about it were the gorgeous visuals and the excellent sound design and original score, which is basically what the game was meant to be at the end of the day - a tech demo of the Xbox One. Shame it turned out as it did.

Last year i've did playthroughs of 5-6-7 Motorsports, and i've gotta say, all of them have some flaws. For example, in 6-7 entries the devs traded quantity over quality in terms of racing tracks and cars: damage system is way less detailed, environment on tracks are less detailed too - for example, some tracks in FM5 had 3-d trees while in FM7 all of them ('side from a few on Mount Panorama) are in 2-d. But they've added weather system and upped (a little) the reflections. Also the camera angle for close pursuit mode in FM5 is better in my opinion. My biggest grip with FM5 is a very limited number of environments - 13 (!!!) is a joke, with my favourite Nordschleife and La Sart tracks almost unused in career mode. This game should've stay in development for another year methinks.
FYI. new Forza Motorsport 2023 has 20 tracks + their variations (night\day

Regarding the tail happy RWD cars, if you have simularion steering on while on controller, they are painfull to steer, and spin out as easily as in GT7 with the launch handling (best way I can think to describe it, sorry). On normal steering, the cars are actually drivable, without the rear tires feeling like they have the lateral grip of a stick of butter.
As for the game itself, I actually bought and played FM5 for a bit earlier this year, with my only previous experience with the motorsport games being FM7, (which I`ve owned and have been playing semi regularly since a few months after FH4 released), and it hasn`t really been holding my attention like I was hoping it would. The first thing I noticed was how much the career structure reminded me on FH2, and the 2nd thing I noticed was that the ui and general look and feel of the game gives off this almost clinical vibe, and the whole thing lacks character, IMO
Compared to FM7 ( my only other point of reference), I`d say the handling is pretty similer, though I think I prefer how FM7 feels, and I prefer how it looks too. The colors may not be as vibrant, but I feel like there is more detail in the cars and environments, and the weather and time of day stuff is sorely missed in FH5 since it adds visual and gameplay veriety (and the rain looks great IMO).
As for the career modes in both, I`d say same crap different smell... They are setup different from each other to be sure, but neither offer meaningfull progression, and you find yourself just going from event to event, from championship to championship, with the same basic restrictions of both car type and PI, and an auto upgrade that takes any potential strategy that could come from tuning the cars yourself. FM7 actually adds adfitional restrictions to what types of parts you can use (for example no more than sport parts), and if I remember for horsepower as well. There is also the ability to homologate your car for the event (so auto upgrade), and even add restrictor plates (and ai think ballasts as well) to make a higher class car fit a lower class race. This feature seems like it`s controversial, if this comment section is anything to go by, but I actually like these restrictions, since I feel like they make sense within the context of motorsport, since there are regulations that govern what can and can`t be done to a car to qualify for a certain class or series IRL. You are also given the ability to buy and auto upgrade cars in FM7, or just buy them without applying upgrades (I believe you`re forced to buy the homologation parts regardless), and than build the car yourself, within the limitarions set by the championship. FM7 also lets you know visually when a part isn`t allowed in the championship, withou you having to buy it. I do prefer the way FM7`s career is setup, but to be honest both are unremarkable (though FM7`s career reminds me of grid 2 and later games)
Overall I haven`t been liking FM5 as nuch as I do FM7, but I do think that at the end of the day it`s still a great game (if a bit lacking in character), and probably one of the best simulator-esque racing games of the time. I also think it would`ve been much better recieved if it didn`t have to follow FM3 and 4.I also recognise that the evolution from 5 to 7 maybe isn`t as big as it should`ve been, even if I`d argue that it`s still fairly substantial

FM5 was my first ever Forza game, and the game that ultimately led me to liking the Franchise. It was really fun back then, especially the like infection mode. I ended up getting a new Xbox and I had a redeem code for FM6, but somehow they didn't have the game available so I was given FH3 instead, and now FH3 still stands, after 6 years, as my favorite game, as well as being the game that ultimately made me a car person. So basically, FM5 changed the course of my life

I enjoyed FM5, i have good memories with it and it has a special place in my heart. Was my first game I got on the xbox one, i was blown away by the upgrades that were made in the visuals department. The racing is still good imo, but even though there were positives, i cant ignore there was a lot of negative, mainly in lack of content. I remember going "wow" every time i played this when it first came out, but the luster wore off quick and theres no reason i would go back to it today. Was a good frame work for 6 and 7 though i think.

@@preciousbabygirl5225 video quality was poor, notably when any space scene appeared, it would fail to properly display the stars, with a blue ray disk you would have to hold it as it was trying to suck it in for about a second, otherwise the drive would not spin and fail to read the disk, as well as problems reading data in general.

I think removing the bottom of the barrel budget cars is a pretty big issue modern Forza games suffer from. Yeah they may be crap cars that go 0-60 in 10 years but you get a better sense of reward, working your way up from compacts to affordable coupes, GT cars to supercars. Modern Forza games seem to reward you too early, giving you an Audi TT or BMW M3 as a starter car

    • @wolfgang_h3t
      @wolfgang_h3t Před rokem

Hell this is even an issue in regards to more "mid trim" cars, every car is it's biggest baddest version too. So not only are we lacking super slow cars, we're lacking slow variants of cars too. Really hit me when I went from fh2 to fh3 and noticed the Corvette stingray and 15 mustang GT had been replaced by the Z06 and GT350

    • @KyrosTheWolf
      @KyrosTheWolf Před rokem

@@wolfgang_h3t Not to mention alot of the older cars from the 70s and 80s are the US spec versions, so they have big ugly bumpers or retrofitted headlights to meet American safety standards of the time. Like the Volvo 240 in Horizon 4, it had it's factory headlights replaced by standard rectangle bulbs and just looked wrong

I have thousands of hours in Forza games, I hated 5 at first, but grew to love it, same with 6, and 7, but 7 is the worst one in the series imo. I have the most time in 7, mainly because nothing has come out since. Unless you count Horizon games, in which case 3, 4, and 5 are all crap.
They make it nearly impossible to race a homologation series upgraded. You can set up a custom B, A, S, etc, but you’re not in with similar cars, it’s anything goes. Like, Yeah, my modded Evo has a chance vs an Ariel Atom v8. Setting up custom races, which that’s the end game in a FM game, especially in newer ones. Remember older FM games? They had tons of preconfigured races to choose from, newer FM games don’t do that at all outside the career mode. The micro transactions are insulting, just buy the ultimate edition. Race length outside of free play doesn’t give you any freedom to choose the length of the race. I race on pro difficulty, I can’t get to 1st place in 2 or 3 laps. The game does not like to run at a high frame rate, idk why that is. For example, I can run the game at 10K, yes 10K, it’s like 4K, only 10, at 60 fps, but I can’t maintain a solid 120 fps at 4K, even with a 13900K, which should laugh at that game. There’s more, it’s just been awhile since I thought about it, I just accept it now and work around the stupid flaws.

I played Forza Motorsports 5 at launch and even played enough to buy every car, and the game had constant audio issues, (some extremely loud), game crashing issues (more than any other Motorsports,) IMO worse handling physics than previous installments, Nurburgring was not in the game at launch, the massive push of auto upgrades and severely caping player's vehicle upgrade levels for racing, pushing in game currency and boosts, lack of multiple multplayer features (the biggest being no open custom lobbies to browse and freely join,) a lacking enjoyable campaign, lack of personal vehicle branded upgrades, lack of tuner brand vehicles (AbFlug, Mine's, Hennessey, Callaway, Ings, Tom's Racing, Spoon, etc.,) I don't even remember if they had any rare secret cars like how FM2 had the 35th Anniversary Camaro or FM4 had the Top Secret S15. So much was ruined and taken away in this title, that unfortunately carried into the later titles as well.
It was a more rushed game to be a launch title for the; at that time, new Xbox, and the game definitely suffered from that.

It's actually surprising to me how many people (mainly gaming youtubers) literally have little to no consoles, and just play on PC only. They usually either use emulators, or buy the whole a** console, like he did. This is the 5th time I've seen a gaming CZcamsr recently buy a console for a specific game/games.
