Thanks for the video Jon, we will be arriving in 10 days with a family of 3 also. Glad to know your budget. Mine will be a little more since I know we like it cold in the house and we all like to eat. We can’t wait to get there and start the new chapter of our life.
John regarding your AXA Thai insurance, I have found them to be honorable when making a claim. Last year I was in Chiang Mai and made an "outpatient" services claim on my AXA Thai travel insurance. They communicated diligently by email to make sure the reimbursement for services went to my US bank account. It took about 4 weeks to receive the reimbursement. I will once again use their travel insurance when I return to Thailand in a few months.
Hi @roblahcyclist1170, Can you share the Line # or email of who your AXA agent is please? We are Canadian...AXA would sell us travel medical insurance then? (Just to be clear) Thanks in advance! Ayr & Lori
Not a bad budget by ANY means, Jon! As a single man, my costs in CM CAN be somewhat lower but at times, they can also be higher. Still, this city IS much cheaper than Bangkok, never mind Hong Kong/Kowloon (all places I DO adore and HAVE spent plenty of time in). Thanks for showing a part of the city near the apartment/flat complex I live in along Thapae Rd! 🙂
Great info. Thank you. Mortgage under a third of your overall expenditure. Pretty good. In Western societies rent/mortgage payments are ordinarily significantly greater, in proportion. Pay the principal down as fast as humanly possible, wherever you live, is my advice. Owning as opposed to renting/mortgaging makes a life-changing difference to the daily financial pressures of life.
Great video. Been in Bangkok/Pattaya/Jomtien for 16 months now. Next move is to Chiang Mai. I'm here alone and live great for on average $1,400 USD/51,000 Baht per month. Looks like in Chiang Mai I can do better!
I know this is a bit picky, but I wish people would pay attention to your name. It’s Jon not John. Just a pet peeve of mine that people get others’ names correct.
Nice thanks! Very Honest & realistic. Too many of those I live on $400 a month in Thailand videos 😉Your examples are a more realistic life IMHO including visa, health & car insure etc Thanks!

I went to a Bangkok hospital clinic for food poison and I seen a doctor and got antibiotic medication for a few days for 400 something baht. I’ve also seen a doctor at the Bangkok hospital chiang mai for around 1000 baht. Very affordable.
Just come across your channel normaly i hate 99 percent of bloggers but you seem to keep it reall..what is your take on holiday accommodation i find it expensive all over Thailand.im just looking for accommodation on Meykong river in chian rai area .its going to hurt but my wife has work hard and we have just finished building our house so stressed out.in a hotel river views its going to cost us 8.500 for 7 days mind you the room in high season was much more expensive i just dont see how they can justify these prices..because wen i was paying rent at only 5.000 per month for 3 bed house here in lampang..yes i live here.... i find most bloggers sugar coating things saying how cheep it is when in fact its not and its not easy to find ...it has taken me 20 hours looking for best deal...cheers mate😮
Thanks mate, appreciate that! Hmmm, holiday accommodation I find can be quite reasonable for a decent room. Here in Chiang Mai 600 a night could get a decent place, 1k could be a nice room. Over 2k and you're getting something very nice :)
@@JonInChiangMaiwe'd love to hear from you. in what areas we should look to find a nice room for 600-1000THB if possible? Is that doable near Old Town? Or should we go further out? We want to stay 2 months and be able to walk everywhere if possible. Thanks in advance from these Canadians! 👋

Lovely information John you live on a good budget when your mortgage is finished it will be much easier for you and the family to
Thanks Robert, yep still a while to go on that though :)
Thumbs up 👍 Jon
Thanks mate :)
You are a smart, careful person. Plan your family life well. Thailand is a very nice city to live in.
👍
Appreciate it Jon. That is about where the two of us want to be monthly. Probably a bit higher as our wine intake will be a line item. 😂
Haha, yeah wine isn’t cheap here unfortunately :)

Thanks mate, yeah it doesn’t really bother me but would be nice if spelled correctly :)
Do you have a separate budget for travel? Or does that come out of the 71,000 baht?
Traveling for the odd day or 2 comes out of this budget, but if we went on a holiday for a week this would be extra.

Hi Jon, any idea how much does it costs for a foreigner to visit a doctor (clinic/hospital) for common ailments like flu, fever, etc?
Not sure exactly but if you just see a doctor it’s not very expensive.
Depends on the doctor. I see a top end Thai doctor who also sells the medications. It usually costs me 1800 baht a visit with the medications.
I went to a Bangkok hospital clinic for food poison and I seen a doctor and got antibiotic medication for a few days for 400 something baht. I’ve also seen a doctor at the Bangkok hospital chiang mai for around 1000 baht. Very affordable.
I’m curious what’s the interest rate on your mortgage?
Currently it's 3.79% but it goes up in 2 and a bit years to quite a lot higher, so we may try to re mortgage it then.
@@JonInChiangMai 3.79% is great in this market. Hopefully rates drop. That will be according to inflation. Pay extra on your payments in the meantime
the mortgage equals roughly the monthly rent of same house?
We rented it out before around 25k so just a bit more than the mortgage.
@@JonInChiangMai how much is amortization?

Do Thai people not like air conditioning?
They do like AC, for some people the electric bill can be unaffordable if using AC unfortunately.
