BETTER than a LES PAUL?

- This Eastman single cut guitar is legit top shelf. With some of the nicest fretwork that I've ever seen, Lollar pickups, a beautiful, classic finish, and high grade components, the SB57/N-BK is an obvious alternative to a traditional Les Paul. While this is not necessarily a budget instrument, I think you're getting way more for your money than the "other" choice in this style. What do you guys think?

Gibson slogan: Only a Gibson is good enough. Eastman slogan: When good enough isn't good enough.
What nobody ever says: "My Gibson looks and sounds just like an Eastman" :)
That s the epiphone slogan in the fiftys
@@mateiko Yep.
Chibson...When enough is enough!
Make no mistake..this is no Chibson... Gibson has great points to them but dont think "made in China" means its not better, it isnt production made in the Epiphone factory, its made in a large factory of highly skilled workers that take an unusual amount of pride in their work, first off l can tell you no corners were cut for budget hence the $2k tag...CTS, Switchcraft, Custom Hand wound Lollars.. but the board is ebony not rosewood, the inlays are not Pearloid but are actual Mother of Pearl and the fret work is all Max says it is.. l have 20+ guitars and l can tell you that the 2 Eastmans l own have the nicest cases of all, the only one being close to equal is my Taylor GA8e case.. these are nothing to laugh at. Just a lil insight from an owner of 2..they are very nice high end Custom Shop level guitars for a lil less than a Standard production guitar.
I bought a Les Paul Standard in the early 70s (used). Almost 50 years later I decided I wanted another. It didn't have to be new.
Looking at guitars, the Eastman most reminded me of my old Les Paul. It didn't look the same, but the weight, the neck, the clean sound of the pick ups, all felt like the vintage Les Paul of my youth.
Most guitar copies try to make cheaper versions of a great guitar. They are inferior because the parts are inferior.
This guitar has great tuners, pots, switches, and pickups. the body and neck materials, and the frets are top notch. This is a really good guitar.
i like this channel because your always teaching or showing us cheaper or more budget alternatives. brands I've never heard. thank you!
I guess all guns are pointed at Gibson now. Schecter has their own version of the LP, Eastman vs Schecter shoot out would be cool.
I checked out that Schecter and in the vid the Pasadena pickups sounded better to me . could be the amp tho .
@@earlspearl2933 depending on what you want from the Pu. Eastman uses Loller PUs. most people consider them top of the line in terms of paf style PU, handwound in the US. Still, for Max kind of shredding maybe a simple SD for half the price of a loller still does the trick better
I fully Agree. I would love a shootout between the Schecter Solo II Custom & the Eastman!

Check out Darrell Braun Guitar channel for his review of the Solo II by Schecter. Those US Pasedena pickups sounded pretty thick and crunchy. I'm saving up to buy one of those bad boys. Because I just bought a Schecter PT Special recently. Later on, I'm looking to buy a Schecter PT SLS Elite and Gibson Firebird Zero.
After playing over 50 gibsons trying to find the right Les Paul for me I tried an Eastman bought the Eastman . Eastmans are built the way Gibson's were built on the early days so Eastman over current Gibson any day.
Dana Rice yeah I hear they’re consistent. Gibson is like rolling a dice and hope you find a good one. Dunno about Gibsons custom shop though? Do you?
I am with you there - posted above that I bought a goldtop Eastman. They have a much better feel and sound that any of the Gibsons that I tried out. I have owned many Gibsons through the years, and the Eastman blows them all away.
Im buying the lp jr. Eastman and might get the goldtop lp as well. Would rather have Gibson on the headstock!
I'm not going to lie, I cant wait to finally get the money saved to buy me a Eastman SB-59 that guitar is calling to me.
Another grateful video max added to your playlist I love promoting your channel
You can tell you really like it, your playing reflects that, and yes, it came through in the video. The price reflects the quality and the tone as well, beautiful sounding, I didn't like the look of the tuners, but I am sure they are very functional. Beautiful guitar, thanks for the review, it was this review that made look closer at Lollar pups. I am looing at putting one of those in my other guitars. You are always surprising us with new cool guitars, which I appreciate! thanks!!
Tried one of these today at Guitar Center - Amazing and unbelievable!! You are very talented as well.
Nobody has a bad thing to say about these guitars. Gorgeous in black too.
I’m very familiar with these Eastman handmade guitars. They are the best quality you will ever find at this price point. It was a little hard to convince s few of my friends to spend this amount on an instrument made in China. But it’s not a factory made instrument, it is literally hand made by a small team of luthiers. As you mentioned, the feel is amazing and it sounds amazing. Last year when these were initially released, they were actually difficult to find, they were sold out everywhere as soon as they were stocked. I would say they are heirloom quality, something to leave your kids. Great video.
love the "people who want les paaa... SINGLE CUT" u did there at the beginning haha 00:50! love ya channel max
i love eastman. i have an e10d electro acoustic. i compared it to my friends martin d28 and he couldnt believe the quality and i got mine new for 900 euros. they are an amazing company. Great vid !
Super awesome. I saw finger smudging during the video. I know it is it super good when Max talks how good the fretboard area is finished.
Another viewer mentioned that and it must be something about the lighting and camera angle. Nothing came off the fretboard when I played it!
These go for $1,800 ($1,759) brand new in most stores. $2,200 is list. I own two Eastmans -- earlier models, the SB59s. One is a vintage amber and has Duncan Antiquities (they go with Lollars now) and one burst model with Duncan '59s (they still put these in their nitro bursts). I love them. It's only a matter of time before I get this one and the SB56.
I recently picked up the SB59-GD, and a week later, the SB59/v. Amazing. Both of those guitars are beyond anything I have owned in the 35 years of playing. They absolutely smoke the current Gibson guitars - Gibson wishes they made guitars this good.
Beautiful looking and sounding. I have the Black Widow and I love it.
One of the most articulate guitars I've heard you review. I listened to the intro and immediately thought, yeah that's actual Gibson quality sound.
Good lord. I'm blown away. This is a holy grail of a guitar.
I sold my Epiphone and my Taylor to get this guitar and it was worth it! After playing it for awhile I can say, it is an absolute work of art. It feels like a guitar I've been playing for years, just has "that feeling" I was looking for.
Beautiful frets!!! I want one. The frets are personally very important to me personally, these look killer!
Great review man... Hope to buy one in the future.. 👍
Bought a used SB59 with Porter Anthems installed from seller on Reverb. That and my Eastman T486 are my main guitars. Fenders and Gibson's are sitting idol.
WOW !! thank ya Max for this pretty good introdution of a realy nice and beautiful copy of a Gibson Les Paul made in china by Eastman !! The SB57/N-BK is phenomenal !!!!
Great sounding guitar!!!!.....glad to see u tearing it up again!!!!!......hope all is well!!!!!!!!........
Thanks for sharing brother! Lovely guitar, Well done Brother!
Be Well Max!
Great review! I own Eastman acoustics, price to quality ratio they are an amazing company.
That fret work is the best I've ever seen on a guitar, (on a computer monitor), staggering.
Awesome video man keep it up rock on
I've heard Max play a lot of guitars , but those Lollar pickups sound fantastic on high gain. The articulation and seperation is superior.
Hi Max! Nice little guitar. I though all vintage less Paul's had glossy finishes. corect me if I'm wrong. in your clip I could see the quality of the fret work. It's great to see craftmanship like that I think the sound was awsome. looks like a great all rounder. Take care Max from your pal Helcat in Australia.
Max you have a great channel! Keep up the good work bro! I prefer the non classic guitars though. V, explorer, dean ml,
Just got one a couple of weeks ago love it Everything he says is true people these are awesome.
How Much?
@@davesaenz3732$ 1759.00 all on trade.
@@markbois1713 Dang. But it sounds great. I got Seymore Duncan's on my Framus LP from 1970. Sounds better than any Gibson lol.
I acquired my Eastman (non vintage) through a trade. It's a legitimate high end guitar. I've tried many LPs, but could never make the buy because the cost just wasn't justified. My Eastman is flawless. It has that custom shop feel. I'll be hanging on to this one.
I found one used recently for a deal I couldn’t refuse. They’re great!
Keith Clark I have no idea how old it is, but so far so good! It was in perfect condition when I got it
I hit the thumbs up button before the video even started.
It's a Guitar MAX video, so I know it's going to be good.
Keep up the great content.
Sounds like a man crush. How do you breathe with your nose stuffed so far up another man's ass?
That is a amazing sounding BEAUTIFUL guitar!!
This is surely to become a family heirloom and will appreciate as the years rock by. Blows ANY Gibson out of the box, IMHO.
Great review man. All the best from Oz. :)
I ordered something similar, les paul sx, also black, can't wait to get it :-)
That guitar looks flawless! And flawless playing as well 🙂
Thanks!
Sounds great thanks!
I work at a gibson dealer and can get great prices but after playing an Eastman SB59 goldburst I bought it instead. It slays the Gibson at a lower price.i have owned many Gibson Lps and the Eastman is my favorite
Thanks Max!!!
The SB59 are going for around $1400 on Reverb I bought mine a few years ago for a few hundred less but same solid one piece mahogany body carved maple top one piece mahogany neck ebony fingerboard first class hardware and attention to detail. No chambering and weight is a bit over eight pounds. Mine has Seymour Duncan jazz and 59 hum-buckers and I have since sold all three of the Gibson Les Pauls I had before I owned the Eastman. Don’t give me that made in China BS. These are made by hand by skilled luthier’s the way they used to be made in the USA back in the 1950’s. Btw- They also make great violins, mandolins, acoustic and 335, 355 style guitars as well.
Same here. I got an sb56 gold burst for about 1200 on reverb. More for sale.
Yes I picked one up on reverb for $1200. Look around there are more. I negotiated a little. It was new as in never owned by anyone but the guitar shop but a 2018 model. Seymour Duncan’s as well and a really nice top. I also picked up a Gibson 2019 Classic recently and the difference in weight is really apparent
That Eastman Les Paul rocks to sounded great I'd love to check one out
Fantastic looking instrument! In your reviews of single cutaways have you done a vid on maybe a higher end Agile?
It’s a beauty! Sound and looks.
.. if you want a really high quality les pa@@#@#@#@ , I mean SINGLE CUT style guitar... You have all my respect!
Marco Tramontana : There's probably a Gibson lawyer hiding behind that Blackstar.
Marco Tramontana if you want a high quality single cut guitar. Buy a telecaster
I like you tested something more expensive. thank you!
Nice, Got me interested
They have long neck tenons as well I believe. I'm not even sure if Gibson historics still have that.
I think the point that many people are missing with this guitar is that the level of craftsmanship, and attention to detail in this guitar is astounding for the price point. Eastman is changing the game. You 100% will not find guitars with that level of craftsmanship and attention to detail at their pricepoints from another company. If you want that level of quality from Gibson, be prepared to shell out no less than 3500 bucks...and even then, I wouldnt trust Gibson to deliver. I own a Gibson. I own an Eastman. I will buy another Eastman.
me too... I would love to be able to afford a gibson super 400, but that's not going to happen in this lifetime... My eastman AR175ce/P90 is hands down one of the best guitars I've ever played and I paid less than half what gibson gets for an ES175. Eastman keeps coming out with new models too. I'm hooked. I'm definitely buying another eastman.
@@sharplessguy Save up and grab that new Romeo they put out. That things is BONKERS.
Sounds beautiful. Owning a number of Gibson's from various years, they've somewhat diluted their name, as of late. I appreciate these videos as I wouldn't have heard of these guitars otherwise, or might have dismissed them. It allows us to know that there are valid alternatives to Gibson, just as we've found out that there are valid alternatives to Fender (Suhr, etc).
suhr is $4000,i just bought a usa strat for $800,i could buy 5 of them for the price of a suhr
@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 who’s selling new American Fenders for $800? Only ones I find in that range for the last 2 years are mim
looks amazing, sounds exelent and being honest for a handmade guitar the price is kinda "right" but damn thats so far from my budget, nice review and keep that grat work!!!
That sounds crunchy as hell. Nice.
Eastman guitars are fantastic as they most likely more authentic than even the modern era replicas of the late 50's LP. Who said a Chibson was bad as great luthiers only building Eastman guitars happen to reside in China as well. Go figure! The sustain on these guitars and the Violin finish on the SB59 is unreal. The move to Lollar from SD pups was a nice fresh update as well.. Great Review !!
Great guitar i have an esp ltd ec-1000 deluxe and man the fret work , set up, sound, play ability was absolutely flawless and yes even with emg active pick ups its a fairly versatile guitar just gotta know how to utilize the pickups for your style:) oh also pinch harmonics are super super easy
Man, Lollar worked some fine-ass magic with those pickups. What rig are you running that guitar through? (Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it).
Love the crown inlays mixed with the "custom" appointments. Wish the big G would do that more often.
My only concern with instruments like this is that if I get bored with it, then it may be a little harder to sell or trade than one of the more mainstream brands.
This is also the reason I tend to favor the "lawsuit era" Gibson copies as they are still a great deal for the quality and have just enough notoriety that you won't have an issue selling it down the road.
KidNato you won’t have trouble selling it. Eastman fans are pretty awesome. They have a great FB page.
@@frankfortmarine That only proves my point. I don't need a FB group to sell a Gibson, Fender, PRS etc etc etc
I have a 76' ibanez LP custom and a 83' Burny RR LP custom we compared it in the local music store with some standard and custom shop gibsons and i realize why i never sell my old japan lespauls :D
Wow...that's quite a guitar. I see they're available for $1,759.00 brand new on Reverb...and those specs are the real deal.
And made in China, hell yeah!
@@srh361 Korea
Very nice guitar. I'd prefer one of these to an authentic one for sure!
Very cool video and fine playing. I've been playin' Gibbies LP's for 40 years. I have never heard of this Eastman brand...but wow...what a guitar. Now i have the gas and have to get one of these. This brand reminds me of Prestige guitars..very nice "equal to or better than Gibson" Canadian guitars (but I believe manufactured in S. Korea. I must have missed the part where you told us what the retail $$ is on this model. I'd like to see a demo of this guitar, a Gibson LP, and a Schecter Solo II, side by side.
I pulled the trigger over the summer. I can’t put my SB57 down. It’s ace.
I would buy a vintage or older used Gibson Les Paul for this price. And in the long run be worth more down the road. But this does sound great if you got to have one! Thanks for the review.
As collector and re-selling the vintage Gibson, yes, but as a player who only wants a quality instrument to play and execute on venues I prefer anything than Gibson
@DurdyClaude well yes... Ypu can make good money out of a Gibson but I already stated my point of view, if anything, when I said "anything but Gibson when it comes to playing" I was refering to other brands of instruments that hold better the tuning, sound better or have better features and quality for the price I'm paying, that's all :D
@jason royale you are absolutely correct!!
I won't own a Gibson at least for now. Sold my Gibson and kept my Epiphone. Hot rodded the pickups and she is sweet.
My God!!!! It looks like a guitar of "The Fallen Angel" 😍😍😍😍
Sounds Soo Heavy 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Outstanding axe!!
I like this guitar. Want one
Hey man, which set of Dragonfire pickups would you say is the most versatile?I was thinking to put a set of Crusaders in a js32 Kelly like you did but im not sure if they would be suitable for stuff like blues and jazz
Those pups are sooooo good!
I own the semi hollow and it is one of my favorites along with my guild starfire vi
Bro I’m gonna own my own in about two weeks but mine is the SB59 sunburst, and I cant wait, ive owned a gibson les paul traditional, a knaggs Steve Stevens, and a fender tele ultra and the Eastman beats them all hands down “exept my knaggs that was stolen and was the best guitar I ever owned but it cost £4000” so I can’t afford that again, if I could I’d have another knaggs.
Im with you! Knaggs are all incredible!
Hey, how have you been finding the Eastman so far?
Hi, thanks for demo. Having 2 Eastman, 1 T59V-ES335 like, and 1 AR372-ES175 like, I can confirm high consistent quality, far better than the Gibson models I had and sold. Eastman is not cheap $1200-1600 range, but a Tokai would be 50% more for same quality, and a Gibson would twice as much for lower quality (unless they improved with new management ?)
The price is a little high for me right now but damn....that is an impressive guitar. Better start saving up Ha
Check out the Schecter Solo ll!
I own a gibson and I own an eastman... the eastman is by far the better guitar and costs way less than the gibson... If price is no object gibson makes some of the best guitars out there... but their best guitars cost an awful lot. The eastman guitar I own cost about half the price of a comparable gibson and the quality is superb.
Or to put it in a different way... Gibsons are not worth the money (anymore).
Of all the different Gibson “style” Les Paul “single cut” guitars I’ve seen out there that aren’t Gibson’s... this looks the nicest. I love that headstock
I have one and it’s a beast.
Top drawer as always .... More to the point when are recording an album ..
Checked out their website, the s56 n-gd is pretty creamy! Do you know what neck profile is used of the s56/57 models? It's not listed in the specs list.
I may get a lot of hate for even asking this, but how does it stack up to the Agile al3200mcc? The neck through construction on the agile is just amazing. And the fretwork on it is impeccable as well. I know it costs 5 times as much...but is it 5 times better?
It's looks alright how much are they
Cool guitar!!
Not to change the subject. But what is a good cleaner for guitars?
It is a beautiful instrument. Not in my price range but the quality is crazy.
I want one!!
Thanks for more great content.
And, thanks for playing so well that I realize what a talentless hack I am.
I'm going to flail myself with my guitars.
I'll never hit your level of talent, so I might as well give up.
J/K about giving up. I'll never quit.
If I was in the market for a $2200 guitar, then this would be on my radar. But hey, I can dream...
$2200 is the starting price point of the better Gibson Les Paul's, no?
Get a Kramer Baretta Special for 179$ put a Seymour Duncan Pickup into it . Locking Tuners on it, Change Trem System if u use it extensivly or just block it - or dont do anything cuz the guitar itself is insanly good for the price.
Checked them out in reverb for between 1400-1700. So not that bad for what it is.
2200 for Chinese LMAOOOOO just burn your money at that point
@@yhwhrevength622 just because something is Chinese made doesn't make it a piece of crap.
One thing Gibson does and no one else seems to do for some reason, is use black pickup ring screws with black pickup rings. I think it's a cleaner look.
so spend 5 cents and change the screws...
GraysonKade, wow, did you miss the point.
I compared a eastman SB59 directly against a Gibson LP standard
The Gibson - $4700 Aus
The eastman -$2000 Aus
The East absolutely blew the gibson out of the water. Better feel, better tone, build quality and attention to detail was better too.
I couldn't resist... I walked out with the eastman SB59 and could not be more impressed. Absolutely love it.
I've also also owned an Gibson LP trad & also a Gibson LP Custom and the East man feels and plays better that both of those, with the tone being on Par.
We GET Arse raped here all the time hey?

@@JohnnyMacalvee-cf7et No, it wouldn't be! We are punished for our geography!
I’ve played a few Eastman guitars and they are exceptional playing and quality stacks up to Gibson. Price point is also a big thing Eastman is 1,500.00 cheaper compared to a LP Standard.
I’d be interested to hear if it has a good jazz or blues voice. I’m not one that plays with a whole lot of photos. I like doing the traditional George Benson, BB King, Joe Pass style music.
The reason I’m looking at this kind of a guitar for that versus a semi hollow body or hollow body is because I’m looking at the success that Joe Bonamassa is having with solid body guitars and I’m just tired of the feedback.
That headstock is sick. That should be used as the epiphone headstock
Hi! What amp did you use?
I noticed more clarity than I expected and not in a way that I like.
I'm considering to buy one but, maybe I'm gonna have to change pickups.
I already have 5 Gibson Les Pauls. However, after this play authentic bs, I'll never buy a Gibson guitar again. Period.
I'm considering Eastman for my next purchase but, this clarity I heard is like an unwanted treble boost. I don't know...
Thanks!
Rock on! 🤘
That’s a nice one !
What would you say the neck profile on that guitar is? Slim Taper? Fat 50s? Middle "C" ? Thanks!
That crunch was sooo HARD 😍😍😍😍
I like the matte stealth mode. No fingerprints.

You’re right, It’s a beautiful guitar but way out of the price range for what most of who subscribe to the channel come here for.
Still love the channel and what you do. I’ve been hooked since your review of the Firefly semi-hollow (I see you are a member of the Facebook group now as well) and the amazing Wolf single cut. Still waiting for a preowned lefty to pop up on the market from them.
Check out some of the IYV guitars from Inyen Vena out of Vietnam. They’re available from Amazon (IVY when doing a search for them on Amazon)
I recently contacted them about the possible availability of lefty versions of their guitars as well such as the “Red Special” and their hollow body and semi-hollow body guitars.
Can you explain that little piece between 0:10 - 0:13 trying to figure it out but cant. I love that piece
I just got a HB 550sc and for the money it's damn good as is. I plan to throw on a new bridge, pups, wiring, tuners and get the frets done. Still cheaper than an Epiphone and way cheaper than an authentic.
