This little-known song, 'Final Good-Bye,' from Sarah Chen's 1986 album 'Love,' is treasured for the incredible depth of emotion it reached. On the third anniversary of her friend Mari Kurihara's (栗原真理) tragic death, Sarah Chen dedicated this song to her. Mari composed the music, while Lou Wen-Zhong wrote the lyrics from Mari's perspective, as if she were comforting her loved ones. It is hauntingly beautiful.
After this album, Chen moved to Rock Records and faced criticism for performing emotionally heavy songs. Her new producers tried to transform her and ‘completely wash away her past.’ It is unfortunate that Chen's masterpiece was viewed so negatively.
Happiness is important, so it's understandable that heavy songs are sometimes avoided. But grief is inevitable, and we need ways to cope. The words in this song have comforted me at times, as I imagine them to be words of my loved ones who left without saying good-bye.
