Eric Burdon and The Animals - 'When I Was Young', on US TV, 1967. ♫♥ Eric Burdon (vocals) Barry Jenkins (drums) John Weider (guitar/violin) Vic Briggs (guitar) Danny McCulloch (bass guitar)
Talent wise, The Animals are a top ten all-time Rock and Roll band. Their songs and lyrics were, are and always will be, in touch with reality. They were great and ahead of their time.
Eric's early altered years: "Burdon describes his early school years as a "dark nightmare" that "should've been penned by Charles Dickens". Due to the river pollution and humidity in Newcastle he suffered asthma attacks daily. During primary school, he was "stuck at the rear of the classroom of around 40 to 50 kids and received constant harassment from kids and teachers alike." He goes on to say his primary school was "jammed between a slaughterhouse and a shipyard on the banks of the Tyne. Some teachers were sadistic - others pretended not to notice - and sexual molestation and regular corporal punishment with a leather strap was the order of the day."
Eric Burdon was a total ORIGINAL. Nobody sounded like him-he was so raw and powerful. "Feral," you might call it. 20-years after he recorded this song, when I was still a bartender, he suddenly walked into my bar, and sat down. I was so thrilled I could hardly maintain my composure, so I just pretended not to recognize him. When I asked him his occupation, he just said, "I write songs." Later, he told me that he lived in Palm Springs, "because he loved the solitude of the desert," quite a change from where he was born, in Newcastle, England. When it came time to pay his bill, I said: "This one's on me." When he looked at me with a somewhat puzzled expression, I replied, "Do you know how many times my band played "House of the Rising Sun"?? He smiled, then handed me a ticket to catch a concert right after I got off work, to see the great jazz singer, Mose Allison. Two of my heroes, in the same night!! I'll never forget it:)

I'd agree with this were it not for the fact that, three years earlier, Dylan had written "Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now."
When I was young in the sixties, life was still full of expectations for our generation. Look at what is left of it now. Fortunately, the youth are always open-minded in their teenage years and that makes me feel good. To go back to that time, we have the music of the Animals, the Stones, the Kinks, the Beatles, the Doors, and there is a whole series of very creative periods. I am glad I was able to experience this! 🙂
Hey, I love you for your words..I am 64 and I listened to them all and saw the most of them all on sage. Eric about 6 times. I hope, you will discover all the super groups, we had in the 60th 70th
Their music was so mature compared to most music of the time. It is timeless and that's why it is still good today. Even though he was young, his voice sounded like it had lived a lifetime.
In their heyday, The Animals could blow the Stones off the stage. Check out the NME awards for around 1965. Eric Burdon is one of the very best voices in rock.
The Beatles were on that bill, and although I don't think they compare to them with song writing and creativity, they blew everyone off the stage that night, including the Fab 4.
True, when the Stones got into their stride, they wrote their own stuff but in the early days, they were performing and recording songs by Lennon/McCartney, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry etc. Who knows, if the Animals had stayed together, they might have started writing their own material too.
I have been collecting The Animal's since 13,I'm now 57.I first saw Eric Burdon at Sunken Gardens here in San Antonio,Tx. back in the late 1990's.I was in front of the stage making a Peace Sign and right before he played the last song "Don't Bring Me Down",he takes off his bandana and tosses it to me.I put it in a shadow box along with my ticket stub and a newspaper segment about his concert..It has strands of his hair that are in the knot where he tied it on.A personal gift to me. When I was a kid growing up in the late ‘60s, if The Beatles were too clean cut and establishment for you, you were an (Eric Burden and the) Animals fan. At that time the Stones were a “me too” band riding on the Beatles’ coat tails; e.g., Satanic Majesties rushed out after Sgt. Peppers. The Stones came into their own later.
I was a Stones fan first, then I was also an Animals fan, then Eric Burden & the Animals fan, then War, but still was & still am a Rolling Stones fan....I mean how can you not be when they're still together & alive?

My favorite 60's British band. Then the Moody Blues. I bought an album in small town Ontario called the Best of the British. Had House of the Rising Sun and We Gotta Get Out of This Place. Yep.🤔⏳⏳😪
I swear, there's something about Eric that just makes him mesmerizing to watch. I'm captivated by him. There's an intensity, yet also a bit of a cool detachment about him when he performs. Wish I had been alive in the 60s. Sigh. :)
When I was 15 years old and The Animals had not long recorded House of the Rising Sun, they played at Wilton Hall in Bletchley, England. I was still at school and we got to the hall early and The Animals had to wait for the caretaker of the hall to let them in. Later we saw Eric and some others come out and I asked where they were going and he said to the pub. I asked if we could go with them and he said ok (we looked older, but he was just being nice because we were fans and he was polite). I was thinking just wait till I go to school on Monday and tell everyone I went to the pub with The Animals. Unfortunately two of the security men had followed them and told them to get back inside. Eric said "sorry girls, got to go back". I managed to get to the front of the stage anyhow, and he was absolutely fantastic. Certainly a great time to be young and English. Saw The Beatles 3 times and shook their hands at Wimbledon Palais in London in 1964 fan club convention. Sat on a stage with the Rolling Stones too. Happy days and happy memories!
Eric Burdon WOW!! Best Vocalist of all time by far!!! His voice One-in-a-Million is just amazing, powerful deep, raunchy and SEXY...turns me on every time💋
Me too Andy. The lyrics hit me perfectly. In my senior year of high school me and one of my best friends, Fred Mayfield wrote a paper on this song and got an 'A' . One of the only A's I got in English

The best singer in the old days!

Happy Birthday!
Nothing can bring back memories better, than a song which he was once connected with.
"I was so much older then...when I was young"
This song haunted me then as it does even to this day.
Me too Andy. The lyrics hit me perfectly. In my senior year of high school me and one of my best friends, Fred Mayfield wrote a paper on this song and got an 'A' . One of the only A's I got in English
My faith was so much stronger then, I believed in Fellowmen, When I Was Young,,,,,!!!
