    Wow the cardboard box is so pretty! My Gansai Tambi are full pans in a cardboard box so not very portable but still lovely! Love the box with the bottle!

      @EveBolt  Před 7 lety +3

      Truly, the art on the packaging is very pretty! I'm glad flattened boxes don't take up too much space haha! I have the box with the full pans too and it's definitely not a travel set but the colors are superb (good grief the turquoise!!). The box with the bottle is super cute but not suuuuper handy, I might have to tweak a couple of things. When I brought it out to sketch I ended up splashing water everywhere a couple of times...

    Great review Eve! A friend of mine who is an oil painter had an older version of the set (with the water bottle,) that she never used because she is now strictly oil. She gave it to me about a year ago, and I was so thrilled! It also had a small square eraser, and a bit of sea sponge in those two squares next to the pencil and brush holders. I guess Kuretake has since stopped including those items in this box, but kept the same design. The brush in my set is also much better, I think, as it looks different and is quite nice. The paints were very dried up, so I soaked them and removed the dried bits of paint, and then refilled with some of my artist grade tube paints. I just love this little set. Have a great day!

    I have the pocket box with the water bottle that I bought about 25 years ago. It’s so old the white plastic has turned yellow. It came with a sponge and an eraser in the 2 compartments above the water bottle, and the brush is retractable. Slick little set. I replaced the paints with artist quality.

    hello! I ordered the 14 color set yesterday off Amazon and then I stumbled across your video in search of some reviews!! I saw the names of the colors it came with but I'm very glad you made the swatches because Amazon didn't provide pictures of the colors so I was kinda left to hope that they'd be good... This will be my first watercolor set that isn't by crayola so I'm very excited. Thank you so much for the review and happy New Years to you!!

    They are fun boxes, I think the pocket set is really nice. It does look a lot like a WN cot an set. Not the less expensive set of WN but the next set up. I've got the less expensive set, I love this little set. It was only $13.99 on Amazon, but varies in price from time to time. My set came with a small travel brush, & I really like it, except it's really small & it hard to cover any area with water.its very nice for detail work though & great for the ATC's that are so popular now. Thanks for think great review on these sets. Oh & my little set of WN WC is 12 pans one is white but no black. I think that's a really nice thing that WN did taking out the black, now to get the white out of the set. Sending you hugs & it's just great to have found your channel❣👍🏻

      The brush with the small Cotman set is indeed very tiny, but it's a good brush! The Cotman Pocket set is the first good set I bought many years ago and I loved it a lot :)

      Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I'll probably end up getting the one with the bottle for water in it. Are the paints the same as the larger kuretake gansai 12, 14, and 36 sets?

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Před 7 lety

      I know the numbers aren't the same, but I don't know if the paints themselves are the same. I haven't found info on their compositions. Sorry :|

      @EveBolt  Před 7 lety

      I just compared the swatches of the set with the bottle to my swatches of the Gansai Tambi 36 and I can't find a match for most colors, so my guess would be that they aren't the same exact paints.

    I cannot get over how many reviewers don’t understand how the ring works. It’s a thumb ring. You put your thumb in it to hold the pallet on top of your hand. It frees tour fingers of your left hand to hold brushes, pens, etc.

      @EveBolt  Před 7 lety +5

      Hi! I've just compared my swatches for both paints and I think the Gansai Tambi sets is a bit better, though they are very similar. I would'nt use these or the Gansai ones for professional work, but as a studio set or outdoors sketching set, they are both very good :) Hope that helps!

  • @bec11mort
    @bec11mort Před 7 lety +4

    These look like they both have a sturdier case than most of the US palettes I buy. The smaller set looks as though it would be really easy to stick your thumb into your paint when painting en plein air. Great review and comparison!

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you! :)
      The cases are really well made, the larger one is truly super nice. Good size, sleek design, lots of room for mixing and you can easily bring a super simple set along that would make it easy to sketch outside (since you can add a waterbrush and a pencil right there in the box).

    • @bec11mort
      @bec11mort Před 7 lety +1

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Před 7 lety +2

      I hear ya XD
      The only thing I'd mention again here though is that it uses a special kind of pans that you can't simply replace with other pans (since these have a hook thing at the bottom to fit in the tray in the box). It's a good system, but that also means one has to empty a pan before adding in another color :D

    • @bec11mort
      @bec11mort Před 7 lety +1

      That is very true! I like the idea that they can't fall out though. I love the Windsor and Newton palettes but I always make a mess when the damp pans fall out! I finally picked up some scrapbooking glue dots, so that may remedy that. Thank you so much for the response!

      Yes! Though in this case, it's a bit trickier as these sets use special pans with a hook at the bottom. :)

    • @dgassilem
      @dgassilem Před 6 lety

      You could take out the paint from the original pan and add your own color from a tube. Or stick a normal pan with one of those craft sticky dot or square (not sure what they are called exactly) or double sided tape.

    Thank you so much for this review! It's really hard to find much info on the Kuretake 14 color set. In your opinion, how do you think these compare to the Van Gogh Pocket Box and Winsor Newton Cotman? I've been trying to decide between these three sets as they're roughly the same price and seem to be of similar quality. If you have any opinions here, I'd greatly appreciate it!

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Téa! In my opinion, your best pick between the three is the Van Gogh set. Cotman pans are generally very weak in terms of pigment load. The Kuretake set is great, but doesn't have any pigment information available, as far as I can find. The Van Gogh paints deliver a nice color and they have all their info available. I have reviews of the two other sets, if you're curious to see some paint swatches :) Let me know if you decide on a set! ;)

    • @tea1762
      @tea1762 Před 6 lety +1

      I did also watch your very helpful Van Gogh review, which is why I thought to ask what you thought of the comparison with the Kuretake set. :) I didn't realize you also had one on the Cotman though - I'll be sure to check it out too. Also, please forgive my ignorance, but is it generally important to have the pigment information available? Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, especially since you posted this review over a year ago!

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Před 6 lety +1

      Oh, great! It is not generally important; it is for some artists and isn't for others. I think having the pigment information helps work out the permanence or lightfastness of paints, which is relevant for commission or pieces you want to display for many years. If you don't really care about that, you can choose freely between both sets. I don't count Cotman, but I think the tube sets might be better than the pan sets when it comes to this range of paint. I have no firsthand experience of that though... (could be a future review!)

    • @tea1762
      @tea1762 Před 6 lety +1

      Oh, I see, thank you! I didn't realize pigment info could help with those things. Looks like Van Gogh might be the smarter choice at this point. I was highly interested in the Kuretake mainly because I've used a few things by this brand that I really enjoy so I couldn't help wanting to try their watercolor palette too. :) I was also originally considering White Nights since it's only slightly more expensive for artist grade, but I got confused by the conflicting reviews, haha. Watercolor palette hunting is a rabbit hole!

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Před 6 lety +1

      It is a *big* rabbit hole, hehe! The Van Gogh set is an excellent starting point. I don't know what are your options, but they sometimes offer a 15-pans assortment at the same price as the 12-pans one. If you have access to that, it's definitely worth grabbing. Kuretake makes excellent supplies, but when it comes to the paints themselves, Van Gogh is a better pick. (In my opinion.)

    I don't know about how's in Japan, but in our country black and white in pallette meaning absolutely trash. It makes aquarelle not-transparent. I prefer Winsor & Newton cotman palette with 12 colors because there is no black at least.
    Also I see there is no cold yellow in palette as a second yellow. This is very bad. But there is black, yes 👍👍👍👍👍
