Insight into a research project: How the wireworm threatens our potatoes

GLOBAL 2000 Wireworm Project
In Austrian agriculture, a pest appears again and again: the wireworm. It ruins the potato harvest of local farmers and makes their lifes hard. The only way out appeared to be poisonous pesticides.
As the leading Austrian environmental protection organisation, we are actively looking for ways to fight the wireworm in a sustainable way. Therefore, GLOBAL 2000 founded the ARGE Drahtwurm in 2016.
The effectiveness of direct control methods such as a cultivator and an insect-pathogenic fungus (Metarhizium brunneum) is tested on several experimental fields.

Befallen Drahtwürmer auch Zwiebeln, Erdbeeren, Schnittlauch, Bohnen, Erbsen?

Hallo Frauke! Der Drahtwurm tritt bei sehr vielen Kulturen auf, darunter auch Zwiebeln, Erdbeeren und Schnittlauch.
Leguminosen, und dazu zählen auch die Bohnen und Erbsen, mag er hingegen nicht. Leguminosen werden deshalb in Fruchtfolgen auch gezielt eingebaut um den Drahtwurmdruck zu verringern.
