Hi Classy, I have set up a plex server on shield pro today, one thing confused me, I wonder which way the plex server work, does the plex app alongside the server app just directly fetch the data from the external USB HDD or there is something to do with the ethernet network?

What if im using multiple external HD's for movie storage? I am currently using 4 external drives (totalling 38TB in storage). Do I have to have the Invidia_Pro directory on each one? or just one of them to move over from internal storage on the Invidia Pro.

Just curious if I can remotely access this from say at a friends house to stream? I have a plex media server running off my pc but switching to Mac so want to have something external that I don' t have to touch if I unplug my laptop and leave. I also have about 2-3 users who may use it at the same time so that is why I need to know how this performs remotely.

Just wondering. I had Plex app installed on my Samsung tv, and Plex Server installed on my PC. I just got the Nvidia Shield Pro, and installed both the app and the Plex Server. I connected to the server on my PC. Did I need it on the shield as well? Can I uninstall it from the Shield without messing things up? I had a hell of a time getting the Shield to work so I'm apt to leave well enough alone but if having the server on the Shield affects the performance I'd rather remove it. Your opinion?
Hi Classy tech, can you advise whether NVIDIA TV Shield Pro will AI upscale plex content and youtube content played via this device. NVIDIA shield documentation only "officially " attaches this to Netflix and Amazon Prime but I have much content in Plex and You-tube I wish to optimise. Many thanks. Michael.
Awesome tutorial. Was able to set-up mine easy. Issues with a clipping sound and some lag and jumps when playing a movie using Plex. Any ideas?

Hey Classy, thanks for the awesome video. One question, can you tell if the pro version has any noise while its on standby. My existing one from 2017 has a noise which is quite annoying. I have been planning to upgrade.
Like digital audio noise or coil whine noise? Mine is silent.
@@ClassyTechCalibrations It sounds like a HDD or a PC fan.
@@jaswant_singh there is a fan built in them and a setting you can go to, to adjust the fan. See if messing with that setting helps, it could be clogged with dust.

There is one hack for shield. It supports some TV tuners meaning you can benefit shield upscaling on cable if buy compatible tuner.
great walkthru,But I have two shields both of which do not get "Allow"option, no matter how long I wait, they time out and go to the next section,going into settings the pms is shown "stopped", I am unable to start, but they are both running as i can see them in my pc plex server, Ihave gone into setting(shield) and opened permissions and gave "allow files" but.still cannot get psm stopped to psm running,one shield is brand new but is show same as the other which is 6months old and installed perfect, tried factory reset, (from menu)and uninstalled both plex apps as per your video,any ideas ?
The shield is not seeing my external HDD for storage. How do I get it to recognize the external storage? I've restarted the Plex Server multiple times but it still does not see the HDD for storage.

@@BenoSaradzic correct it will output an MKV file. You can have it contain multiple audio tracks and PGS subtitles if you want it too

Go to settings on the Shield, go to Developer Options, find "Stay Awake", toggle that on.

No you only need to connect the drive to the shield if you want to run your server off the shield

What would you recommend for 4K HDR Remux to get streamed without too much loadtimes/puffering and so on...
A HDD is fine, USB 3 enclosure with a sata 2 or sata 3 HDD.

I know this is off topic but what setting would prevent me from being able to use the game optimizer? Cuz i cant pick game optimizer for the picture mode. It just doesnt show up and this is with a PS5.
Weird, maybe go to home dashboard, go to the three dots in the top right and you can edit/rename inputs. Change that input to a game system manually.

I use makemkv. However ripping UHD Blu Rays is more complicated.

Do you have a pdf or jpeg of the movie cover picture in the file of the movie or TV show or will plex automatically add that to it?
Plex looks for those cover arts automatically and applies them and for the most part does a good job at grabbing the right one.
Is the Nvidia Shield absolutely necessary for uncompressed audio for ripped 4K Blu-ray dvds. I’m tired of streaming some content as the compressed audio makes dialogue sound terrible
I may be wrong but Im pretty sure the Shield is the only device that will do uncompressed audio with the Plex app and a few others I believe. Apps like Netflix, Disney+, Prime, etc dont do uncompressed at all.

why does my shield pro only show "uninstall updates" rather than just "uninstall" "plex media server" like yours?
I was not able to see my Plex Media Server and storage as shown at the 6:40 mark of this video. Everything was as you said up to that point. Can you tell me what I should do to actually see my server? Great job on the video anyway.
Same here. The only two options I see are "Internal (system storage location)" and "Internal (user accessible storage location)".
EDIT: Got it working. Trying to remember exactly what I did to get it to show up. For some reason it was a hassle to initially get my Shield's device storage location to stick with the NAS (it kept unmounting randomly). After broadening access perms on my NAS, that seemed to keep the device storage. After that, I think I just needed to close out & reopen the Plex app on the Shield.

I watched one of your tube clips on using an external drive and Nvidia together on the network.
I have a 2021 Nvidia shield and windows 10 as well as an 2T external drive.
We are moving, I will set up Ethernet connections to 4 TV's.
Can I set these up with multiple Nvidia's as nd all access the same drive, or would you suggest any alternatives.

So you can plug the external directly into the shield?
Yes, as long as you have the Shield with a USB slot. I have the 2017 mode with an external USB hub plugged in and have 4 hard drives connected to my Shield.

Please help. I uninstalled both plex and media server app from the Shield Pro. Then re-installed, and went through the next few stages, and every time I start the configuration it shows, and I quote, "Plex Media Server - Setup Failed Something went wrong Sorry, but there was an issues configuring your server. You can try it again by pressing continue." Any ideas where to start looking?

Is kodi not more versatile? And more TV friendly.
I prefer Kodi, less headaches, and doesn't bug me about plex pass, but plex has some easier enhancements, like voice search, can be set up in kodi, but I never got it to work, and Plex has better organization of media, liek searching for actors, etc
Kodi is better for just purely playing content off a hard drive. With Plex you will be limited to the bandwidth of your ISP. I had issues with buffering and pixelating with 4K remuxes and encodes here and there with Plex. I found a much sharper image through Kodi. Theres some extra settings you need to apply to get Atmos and DTS-X to pass through on Kodi though.

If I use the Shield Pro as server and my internet goes down, can I still play movies direclty on the shield through Plex? Or do I have to be logged in to Plex to play them thus internet is required?
Good question .
Your shield can play files from hard drive/flash drive. This just makes it so you can play in different rooms of your house with the same app.

Plex media server should be fully configurable from Shield, like every other media server.

stopped watching as soon as you said the files setup was located elsewhere came here to learn how to do this from start to finish.
So I picked up an NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro a couple of weeks ago to use solely as a Plex server. My hope was to get better transcoding from it than from my current Synology NAS. After a week of email exchanges with NVIDIA Support, the SHIELD is being returned. The problem? Although you can mount a NAS to it for media storage, you can't use the NAS for metadata storage. Any moderate Plex library will exhaust the SHIELD's internal memory and attaching a USB drive to the thing for metadata storage was not what I was looking to do; twice the power usage, significant additional expense. So, the device goes back. Very disappointing experience overall.
So you can't use NAS with it? Only external hard drive?
@@SilverLakeKingdom For Plex metadata, that's correct. The Shield can see media on a NAS, no problem, but it can't store Plex's metadata for that media on the NAS. Has to be either internal storage (9GB) or an attached hard drive. My Plex collection is sizable and my metadata is 53GB and growing. Metadata, if you don't know, is the stuff Plex downloads from the Internet when you add media to a library. It's descriptions and trailers and reviews and actors' photos, and artwork, and all that. It can take up a lot of room.
How do you mount a NAS? When I'm in plex on my PC and I want to add the movie library from my NAS I can only find the internal /SDCard on the shield.
The server constantly un-populates then dissapears, and doesn't allow it to be re-enabled. not worth the effort

this is useless information. there is no explanation of how to connect to nas drives from within the shield pro. and if I have to use folder names that I didnt create then the entire server premise is ridiculous. kodi makes it very easy to do. search using nfs and then add easily. plex is absurdly complex for no good reason.
Plex can't actually be so pathetic that it can't recognize Shield mount storage, without going to a stupid PC?. Kodi can and just about every other media server. Step up your game duds and Plex development.
