    2. Don’t gamble
    3. Don’t stare
    4. Don’t fraternize with the guards more than basic communication. Prolonged conversation can be perceived by other inmates as you snitching, which leads to…
    5. Don’t be a snitch. You saw nothing.
    6. Don’t sit on other inmates bunks without their permission.
    7. Get a job within the prison. Commissary funds + it makes the days go by faster.
    8. Utilize all free time either in the gym or in the library.
    9. Keep in contact with loved ones as often as you can, through whatever means are available to you.
    10. Don’t go looking for a fight, but if a fight finds you, fight back. Even if you lose, you’ll still be given more respect than just cowering in a ball. Defend yourself.

I appreciate the clarification on 'snitching'. One case I know of from a few years ago a couple, law abiding neighborhood parents, were harassed because they reported when they found out a neighbor, 28 yrs old, was giving a few kids in the neighborhood alcohol and pills, because they 'snitched'. No, parents will protect children, and why a 28 yr old man would be hanging out with 12 yr old boys, trying to get them intoxicated, is a huge concern any adult should speak up on. That's not snitching but simply being a decent human being with a functioning brain.

    • @markmcculfor6113
      @markmcculfor6113 Před 2 lety +159

Exactly, the rules about snitching don't apply to law abiding citizens. If you see something against the law, report it. We gotta keep our neighborhoods safe and our streets clean.

To me it seems like in some cases, possibly this one, these people are generally just considered losers by their own peers so they hang out with younger people. Not always but when I was 14 or 15 I was also hanging out with 20 year olds, none of who I feel ever tried to take advantage of me.. In certain cases they just may be outcasts

But if someone choose a same sex partner, or chooses cannabis instead of antidepressants, or chooses to vape instead of smoke, then it's fingers pointed at them and lots of judgments. I took part in the Sunday Chapel services twice. This was an experience I will never forget. At the end of the service an inmate came to me and showed me my Bible stuck down his pants. When it comes to hygiene you got guys that take to the extreme, had one get shanked for taking a crap in the shower and not cleaning it up.

There are different types of ratting, but Larry is hardly an Expert Convict obviously, even though he makes 20 grand a month pretending to be. There’s “dry snitching,” which is even more common and chicken shit than full blown ratting. That’s when you tell something to someone else who is a full blown rat, knowing that THEY will snitch. Snitching is sadly pandemic in the joint. It’s so common in some prisons that there are few if any repercussions for doing it, mainly because the guy getting ratted on gets moved away to another prison than the snitch. And since you can’t shank all the snitches, too many, and since you never really know who the rat is, a Snitch Culture exists.

I lived in a bad area as a teenager. I spent more than a few nights in jail too. Lock-up culture is an extension of street / hood culture. Playground culture for badasses, degenerates, and fuck-ups. The first thing I learned on the playground was NEVER SNITCH. Two things happen if you snitch / go to the authorities with a beef:
      1) Nothing: The teachers /cops / gaurds don't give a fuck that some asshole bullied you, stole from you, or raped your punk ass.
      2) Loss of respect: The other kids / gang members / inmates will rightly see you as a rat and a pussy. This will cause you more grief than any possible benefit
The one rule he left out was "Handle Your Business" If you have a problem with someone, handle it yourself. Like our host did when he smashed his cellies head into the wall. Handle it yourself, and take the consequences like a man. Don't be a pussy.
Snitches and pedos aren't hated so much for being snitches and pedos as they are for being cowards. Opportunistic shitbags. Believe it or not, prison and street gang cultures are honor based. It's why they are so violent and unforgiving. I worked as a white collar professional for decades after escaping the 'hood. It was awful. Most motherfuckers in suits wouldn't last a week inside, because they have no sense of honor, and are total pussies who lie like shit. Their word is worthless, and you never know when they'll back-stab you.
Everything this guy says comes down to honor and respect.
Fucking babies and snitching are about as dishonorable as it gets, inside or out of the joint.
      Handle your business.

My dad was in prison when I was in 6th grade till I graduated jr high for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, got blamed by everyone else, judge found out he dropped out of public school which I’m guessing increased his sentence to get his GED. Hearing all that you’ve shared with all of us gives me insight into maybe what my dad probably went through in prison. I don’t know what level of security he was in tho. The people that got my dad involved were co workers trying to steal money from the company they worked for. Am curious what sort of hobbies, etc, you did to keep mentally sharp in prison. Doing 14 on a 20 in Texas, I read lots of books, averaged 50 books a year until the last 4 years. Then I discovered I could write novels, and wrote many hundreds of pages worth in a "magnum opus" book series I planned to finish off and publish when I got out. In 2020, I paroled and hauled out 2,000 handwritten pages. (I'm still transcribing the texts into electronic format to this day. It's ironic that distractions in the outside world have greatly slowed my productivity. I was very focused, as my novel-series was tremendous entertainment for myself while I was locked up. Now... not so much. I wish this weren't so, but I let all the nice things about freedom dissipate my time. Am 65 and collecting a good social security check, so I still have LOTS of time to devote to this... just... enjoying the world too much. LOL)

Great advice. I was a CO (Correctional Officer, guard) for 16 years, at a MAX facility. So my perspective is different however I observed many of things you’ve said. Many people don’t realize how polite incarcerated people are compared to the outside. When I’m in a crowd, such as at Costco people will bump into you or reach for an item right in front of your face without saying “excuse me, pardon me” in prison that’s disrespectful and respect is all you’ve got. If a person feels like you’ve disrespected them your life could be jeopardized. The guards who were respectful towards the prisoners had a much easier time at their jobs too. I’m not saying a guard had to be lenient, compromised or corrupt. Just treat prisoners without demeaning them.
One of the homicides that happened while I was employed there was a middle aged prisoner who hadn’t been at a sentenced facility long decided to turn the TV channel in the module common area while several young gang members were watching something. There were words exchanged. Later that evening the younger prisoners ambushed the guy in his room and gave him a beat-down, they later claimed wasn’t intended to kill. Now whether or not that’s true….. Anyway, he ended up deceased at 45 years old.
The reason guards don’t care much for snitches is that they are usually SAM’s too. SAM = Sexual Abuse of a Minor. Not always, but more often than not.
