  • If you're interested in partnering with me on a build or having me design and manage one for you, reach out on my website below!
In the video we go through the entire building process in one of the hottest Airbnb and real estate markets in the country, Joshua Tree. We go through purchasing land, home design, finding a contractor, financing, plan check, construction, permitting for short term rental, and what to consider in keeping or selling. It's a long one.

I bought land in the high desert in 2021. I thought about selling it but now I believe I may keep it. Thank you for this video!

    Thanks for the advice!
Just got some property in 29 Palms, bordering Joshua Tree but building codes here are a little more strict.
Man, if I would have bought five acres north I’d be in the county.
Oh well, at least I have city water and a gorgeous view of Indian Cove.

Super insightful. Thank you. I'm currently in Plan Check for the single family I've been designing with an Architect & Engineer. Can't wait til it's done.

Thank you for the wealth of information you provided. I grew up in JT but moved to LA after graduation. Retirement is about 8-10 years away and I’d really like to return to the desert. Currently looking at land to build on but am clueless of the process. Your run-down gave me a great idea of what to look for and what to expect!

Wow! That is the most comprehensive video I have seen not just about building in the high desert but building a house in California in general. Great work Johnathan.

Great video. I've been in and out of the desert for years, but I'm thinking of building a small place up in the Hansen Tract in 29 Palms for my retirement. This is a great primer to get me pointed in the right direction.

I believe Yucca Valley charges approx 35k for a building permit for a new home. Is there a similar fee in Joshua tree/san Bernardino County? I heard the school fee per SF. Anything other substantial fees from the County ? Thanks !

Great video! Wondering how much you would budget for all the city planning/red tape stuff. Another video I just watched said $30-40k. Does that seem right?

Hey Johnathan. Great video! You mentioned leveraging the bank. I've got 2 remote jobs, but not much saved yet. If you could go back, would you wait again to save the 175k, or try to start sooner? If sooner, how much would you need? Thx!

If you want air-conditioning and all the modern appliances I would budget about $40,000. I've been doing off grid systems for 25 years and people who think they can do it on the cheap get a rude awakening when they try to actually live with a cheap off grid power system. And honestly, I know people that lost their wives! 😂

I know it is kind of ironic but the only reason I'd want to build out there is to have a place for stargazing out where there is no light pollution. Can't control the universe though.
