- UPDATE: check out my easy binding tutorial here (shown briefly in this video):
• Easy Binding Tutorial ...
NOTE: Please keep in mind that this is just ONE way to demonstrate how you could go about making a simple journal, and [of course!] you can change things about it to make it suit you! There are never any rules it is all about personal preference!
I made this video specifically for those of you that are beginners, that have asked about making journals and where to start.
This video doesn't go into great detail, however I hope it can help you break down the steps and make your project less intimidating!
There are SO many different ways to do these things, and there is no right or wrong! Learning your own techniques and style comes simply from trial and error. And the best part is you can usually use what you already have on hand, especially if you are just learning, or practicing your technique.
Here are some binding tutorial videos I believe to be very informative:
-Marianne Kensington (poketfullofvintage):
• Video
Sea Lemon DIY channel she has multiple tutorials on different binding methods:
/ sealemondiy
SUPPLY/MATERIAL LIST:
- recycled cardboard (cereal box, biscuit box, packaging etc)
- Paper trimmer (Mine is American Crafts)
-Scissors
-PVA glue
- cover decoration (I used scrapbook paper but you could also cover yours with wrapping paper, plain paper, paint, newspaper etc)
- inside pages (I used scrapbook paper scraps but you could use anything you have including plain copy paper, newspaper, wrapping paper, junk mail, brochures, note paper, etc)
For binding you will need a needle, awl, thread and possibly a ruler, pencil and paper if you wish to make a template, please see my binding tutorial for more details.

Great tutorial. I’ve never made a journal before, always been a sewer and beader, but guess it’s never too late...even at 79.
You yourself are an inspiration!!
Hi Patricia, I am just replying to you as I am 76, and have been making journals for over two years now. I am in the process of writing little stories for my great grandchild, and I think this is a lovely way to do things. I began after a car accident, and became very absorbed in it. You will love it once you get going.

Patricia, you are such an inspiration! I'm still very young (17) but I'm convinced it's never too late to learn new skills and have fun with your creativity! Have fun journaling!❤️
I am 90 .... I made a journal when I was 78 . It is just the planning and healthy lifestyle that keeps me going and of course Allah ( who else is a Muslim )
Imagine your relatives finding that journal 100 years later, it would be the most amazing thing
Agreed.
Right? :)
I found old letters once that my grandmother & grandfather send each other while he was in a clinic for his alcohol-problem.
I asked her, of course, if I could read them & she happily agreed.
I read them to her & it was beatiful to see her relive everything, all those good memories of her husband who passed long ago.
He was a good person & tried hard to get better for her and their children.
They loved each other unconditionally & it was amazing to be able to read those things! :)
the lego you stepped on. I had a similar experience recently, I found a journal my grandmother had when she was in high school. She passed 7 years ago, I couldn’t ask her for permission but my dad eyeballed it, and it didn’t have anything personal, just reminders, events, recipes, and notes of classes, I even found some poems and signatures from her friends when she was young. It certainly made me cry, it made me realize all of the things i didn’t knew about her, all of the memories that journal held and was now in my hands, her life, her identity, something only pages can conceal now that she’s not here. It’s beautiful. And it has inspired me to start my own journal. I want to be remembered.
oof if someone found my journals they would cry, I've written so many sad things in mine throughout middle school n high school n now adulthood.
michelle castillo i wish you to live better life the world needs you 🥰🥰
The fact that she made a journal out of a belvita box is what makes her so talented to me
I use all kinds of boxes and cardboard from various sources....who can afford to buy that stuff?
Pp
Yeah really cool I mean yeah
Right!
i love the simplicity of this. you see these “easy” journal tutorials and they use so many intricate tools and methods and it’s nice to have everything you used on-hand already
I didn't think I was gonna watch the whole video, but I got so mesmerized :O

@Arasalan Baig Good question! She said it’s a PVA glue. Google that maybe? Here in the USA, I don’t know what a PVA glue is. Going to Google....
@Arasalan Baig: PVA stands for its chemical properties and the fact that it blends with the materials it’s applied to and forms a strong bond. Elmers’ and Aleene’s are both PVA glues as is Mod Podge. Use what you’ve got.
I only watch your videos because your voice slows down the time and calms my inner chaos. Thank you.

Hello: I'm a beginner on Junk Journaling, and after I saw this video, I followed your step by step examples! I'm so happy to have found this video, since I actually didn't know where to start doing the junk journal! Thanks for showing! tessa
This is how I like to see books made. So many people over-think the page selection and/or make everything so matchy-matchy. I like there to be an eclectic, whimsical feel ❤😊👍
TFS! xo
If this is for beginners what am I??
We probably noobss
but ur Hermione
(i know this comment is 2 years old lol but still had to answer it)
Super begginer
If it’s for beginners doesn’t mean the result has to be bad or something, it just means that it is explained very clear and carefully
Just don't be afraid of making mistakes. The first step to start new hobby is to learn from every mistake you make how to not do it. If you do it very carefully, you'll see that your abilities, knowledge and confidence slowly rises during every step you make. Good luck :D If you want to see a guy who learned out of nothing through hard work how to make one of the most astonishing and beautifull notebooks on the world, go see Stopan channel. He is the best journal craftsman on CZcams.
I've only watched the first 2 min of this video and already know it's excellent .Thanks for speeding it up and the clear voice over. Very professional. I don't have the time to watch someone looking for their supplies, phones ringing, tv and kids in the background. Some explain what they are going to do and don't even start the project for 7-8 minutes, then there's 20 min of paper cutting. The only complicated process was the binding and you gave references. Again, very professionally done! Now I will watch again. Thank you
OMG THIS cracked me up lol sooooo me!
I know your comment was two years ago but very relevant to myself, it drives me nuts, people who take forever to show you something about the process, they show you a package, give where, when, and how they bought it, what size, what weight, what colour of knickers they wore, all a load of twaddle. This tutorial is super, just shows one what to do, at a super pace.

Thank you so much for demystifying how to make a journal, with no expensive material. Really inspirational.
I like that this version is so simple. I like that it's roomy enough for lots of add-ins. Great jumping off place for a beginner!

That was the easiest, quickest video on basic journal making. I really like your method of cutting diff sized papers/folding them first and then stacking them for signatures by grabbing one from each pile. Brilliant!! TFS.
This video I've watched over 30 times in the last two weeks and it's the one video that inspired me into taking up making my own journals! Thank you Johanna you're such an amazing soul and inspiration! 😍😍😍😍
I never would've thought that a video about making a journal would be this relaxing :)

I see it's been 3 years since your comment but it caught my attention because I started journaling and writing in diaries since I was 10 too. I am 63 and have piles of them. It's a great way to go down memory lane as one ages.

It's been years since this was posted and years for me since I've wanted to make my own journal... I really like this style and I happen to always save cardboard boxes also for little projects... I'm pretty sure I saved that same box heh I also have lots of leftover scrap paper to use too so I'm gonna try this out. Wish me well ❤️
I made a journal using this process! It was so much simpler than I had expected it to be! For me, the only tricky part for cutting the paper to a particular even size. But I managed and the final product was so good! I'm gonna make many more!
I've just made my first journal ever following this steps and I'm in love with it. Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial. Amazing work ♥
a good way to recycle all paper we collect after various craft projects
I'm so happy the Shabby Art Boutique shared your channel. I have been making journals for 2 1/2 yrs and still learned 4 new things from this video. Thank you so much for making it! I will be sharing it too!

I would like to have one because it looks pretty, and I would love to make one but I don't know what would I do with it...
I think journals are important. You can write about your feelings and feel better and you can look back what you felt like many years later. If you have iPhone for these things, you just throw it away after few years..

Hi Johanna, I just wanted to say a very big thank you to you for this tutorial! I am new to Art Journaling and just joined Get Messy this month, which I where I think one of the Messians referred me to your you tube channel. I have just this very minute made my first ever Junk Journal and I am so, so happy! Now I need to commit to this journal immediately. I will give myself just this evening to think it through, as to what I want to put in it/do in it and tomorrow I must create! Thank you again, I have watched a number of your videos and I am so grateful to people like you who give so freely of your time and knowledge!
I consider myself a pretty creative person, I do a lot of DIY's, I draw, paint, ect, and I write a LOT. I'm currently working on my second novel (just to give you guys an idea of what/how much i write. I'm not trying to brag I swear) But, despite all that, every time I've used a journal, I've hated it. I just never had any enthusiasm. About 5 months ago I started a bullet journal, and I LOVE IT. SO MUCH. Yeah, but journals in general just weren't for me.
(I have a point I promise)
Your vids have made me want to try to journal properly. I've got loads of notebooks and stuff around, and I think I'm going to challenge myself to start journaling in one of them. Nothing crazy, just one or two bits of drawings or writings a day.
This journal is really pretty!
Are the novels out?
A sweet little journal anyone would would love to own or receive as a gift. Great use of economical supplies!! One of the best journal videos I've seen, & I watch a lot. I can already see myself making this, and feel I can do it because of your excellent instructions. Thank you for creating this for us!!
Hi 👋
thank you for covering a lot of tutorial in an efficient amount of time. The fact that you sped up the video kept my attention. I'm really excited to get started on this. Blessings to you.
I really like this tutorial and how you put pockets on the pages you have string on. That way you dont see the string. I just started learning about this journal style this week. I wish I had know this when the kids were growing up. I love crafting and making new things. I do tutorials as well. Crafting is passion.
thank you. finally another use for the cardboard boxes that I've been saving to recycle.

When CZcams gives you a notification for something you are not even remotely interested in then find you become obsessed! Thanks!
Your speed and just eyeball measurements says it all. You are really good. I will definitely try.
I love this tutorial! It's so simple and clever, 'cause anyone can do this at home, and the result is simply stunning. I will try this out!
Aw thank you! Have fun!!
I literally just found your page as I finished matric and honestly your art journal videos just gave me so many ideas about how to improve every visual journal I've ever done 😅🙄🙈this is so cool though! I've been wanting a journal like thing and now I know how to make one??!! 👏🏼😁💕
This is so cute! I love how customizable it is and all the little quirky pages and random pockets and stuff almost naturally inspire creativity within the journal. Definitely going to try to make my own.
This was an excellent video. It explains a lot without being “long winded”. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you for sharing.

This video was so calming and helpful. I’ve been binging your videos and I’m so impressed. I don’t know which art journal to create first but I think I’ll start with this one!
thank you, this is very helpful, I've rush so many times to bind my journals and you're the first that show how to bind it like that, tanks a lot
cute video! unfortunately I'm not crafty, I have a ton of journals (not like I use them anyway), I'm fantastically uncreative, and I will definitely never make a journal. it was nice watching you do it though! especially when it means im not studying for an exam tomorrow :/
Your way of doing art reminds me of myself. I'm not usually precise, instead I just eyeball measurements and go with the flow. And I thought I was being messy and disorganized. But seeing your amazing work, it affirms me that, yeah, we just have our own ways of going about things 🌟 I'm inspired.

It's beautiful! It makes a perfect gift for journal lovers.
I own a mini binder because I often add sections or change formats so, yeah!
Johanna, that was inspirational. I always stress before planning to make a journal or mini album. Your video teaches that the experience can be fun and relaxing! Thank you!
Thank you so much for posting this video, I've just made my first journal and binded it, it was my first attempt & I'm amazed at how it's turned out, it's fantastic, I love it and I'm now completely hooked, your videos are easy to follow & you explain everything so its easy to understand, I can't wait to start journaling inside it, thank you 😊
Hi Johanna. I watch your journal with me videos quite often and always wanted to make one for memory keeping. I had previously made a sewing journal. Yesterday I managed to make a junk journal for memory keeping and I am very much excited about it. Just wanted to thank you for the great inspiration you are passing through your videos. Keep going and thank you once again
this is amazing. I NEVER watch long videos from start to end but i just HAD to with this one. woah.
Really like this. Making one my self today. Made my covers today!
What a fantastic way to use scraps! I've never made a journal but your video has inspired me to give it a go. Thank you for creating and sharing this video.
Always enjoy watching your videos - because you remind me to enjoy the process of making journals & how to make it simple. Thank you!
Honestly, this is one of my favorite CZcams videos. It really is beautiful! Every time it pops up in my suggested videos I always end back up in here :)
I've never seen a video like this. It was so cool to watch! Thanks for posting it!!
I really really love it. I think it's just a great idea that I will definitely try😍
One of the best simple videos I’ve seen on how to make a quick simple journal. Thank you so much. I’m already imagining taking out my seed beads and adding them to the exterior binding as I go along. Now I just have to buy some papers, as I don’t scrapbook and don’t have scraps. I do however, paint. Maybe I’ll add some of my old discarded paintings, or old book pages, or see what pretty magazine pages I could use. You’ve got me running to my pantry to see what box I can abscond with.
I found this video at the perfect time for me. I'm going on a trip and I LOVE this idea to keep all of my momentos! Thank you for showing me how it's done!

Thank you for sharing. This is a great tutorial. Easy to follow and clear instructions.
Love the ideas e.g. of using scraps for the pages, large hair clips to hold the pages, how to make pockets etc
and especially reusing a cardboard box for the journal cover.
Stitching the signatures, I will need to replay a few times and look at other videos to help do this,
but I got the general idea. Thanks for all the information. Awesome.
