  • Mental health has been a taboo subject for most pilots. But the reluctance to deal with or even talk about the issue in the aviation community is changing. The FAA's approach is changing too. This a round table discussion of pilots mental health.

A person being treated for a condition cannot get an FAA medical (3rd class)
A person NOT being treated for an active condition can get an FAA medical (3rd class)
That's just from what I understand, it seems backwards to me!
GA should need a drivers license.
    Thats IT!

They shouldn’t equate depression with taking “drastic actions”. Anyone who has ever had a job they didn’t like has had some sort of depression.

  • @josephkaminski1857

The first thing they can do immediately is TERMINATE the verifications and testing needed for Depression that has been resolved 5 or more years prior to 3rd class application. It is ridiculous to do all that is required in a deferral over a depression that is long over and only stated on application by the applicant to be truthful according to the law. Because the question asks if YOU EVER IN YOUR LIFE had. It seems to me as a former NASA technical director that the FAA requirements to prove what a Depression status was that is long resolved and over and not even treated anymore is ridiculous. It should stop Immediately, and it can be stopped by a immediate directive from Mrs. Northop.

This is a bit PC language. We can’t report because your process jeopardizes our livelihood and investments.
I am two years into my medical because of prior ADHD diagnosis with a clear report from HIMS. Why so long? It takes 3 months for a response with partial questions.
Fix the process. You’ll fix the trust.

Yeah, and how much has it cost you to go through this longer medical?? That's the other stigma I've heard repeated over and over: Anything less than a PASS from the AME could result in THOUSANDS of dollars in costs. I wish they would have addressed that in this conversation.

@@jimbaur8879 my understanding is that neuropsych eval runs ~$2000-$2500. It's the main reason I haven't tried.

36 minutes in… amazing that FAA equates alcohol/drug abuse and “substance dependency” with… taking an SSRI for mild depression. Truly, they are still in the Stone Age here.

This is an increasingly timely topic given world events of the past few years. I'm coming out of a 25 year tech career but have a master's degree in international psychology, wondering how i could get involved in aviation mental health in a value-added way. (Also 40 hours into my PPL and AOPA member) Thoughts or ideas appreciated.

Most if not all depressions could come from how depressive cessnas are. And WW2 lycoming engines. I think a clever cost effective turbofan engine for 2-4 seat planes is the joy cure we need :)

FAA is in direct violation of the federal law. The BASIC MED law passed by CONGRESS is based on a simple Premus. It states the purpose is to make is so that if you can drive, then you can fly. But the FAA imposes requirements that in order to even obtain a basic med, the applicant MUST first pass a Class 3. which creates an obstacle that prevents many who can drive from flying. The FAA knows this. they are sick/// Federal law does NOT allow discrimination upon age. However, the Rule you had to have a Class three prior to 2006 , disenfranchises older pilots who have not kept a medical current. It is illegal to disenfranchise a whole group of people based upon their age. Predating to 2006 is basing the applications upon AGE. . This FAA ,mandatory preexisting class three medical requirement, to obtain a basic med is not in accordance with the law or the intent of the law. It is really a basic road med filter and road block if EVIL intent. A block PUT IN BY THE FAA SPECIFICALLY to prevent anyone who does not first met a class 3, ( much harder requirements, than the Basic med) from EVER getting a basic med. and that is going to get the FAA in a major class action law suit. It is the FAA who is responsible for the lack of pilots and mechanics. The USA needs 60,000 pilots and hundreds of thousands of mechanics. the FAA is WHY that need is growing. The requirement for mechanics are just as sick in a different way. Just plain sick. Discriminating and filtering requirements that are illegal and unconstitutional. I cant believe no one has files a class action yet. But Im sure one is coming . They are chasing away all potential young pilots with these abusive rules. Which are also Unconstitutional AGE restricting rules. They have been growing regulations and putting in these little discriminating hooks to keep people out and it is going to end up with the FAA being broken down. I have met hundreds of young people who cant navigate the complicated medical rules with simple ill relevant medical obstacles created by the FAA. THIS IS NOT THE MILITARY. This is civil aviation and the stories I heard from young people are absurd. A young man who is 20 that was honest on is application that he took ADHD medication when he was ten. The doctors found out he didn't need it and he never took again past age of 11. . The FAA wants this young man to spend no less than 5 grand and months on tests for a special issuance. Yet this same young man can go in the Air force and they wont care because the air force does not look at records as far back as TEN years prior. NOR do they want records from your adolescent years of 10 years old. They certainly dont make anyone prove they no longer have a illness if they are not even taking a medication for it or treated for it or if it was a misdiagnosis. They dont make people prove the medical conditions when they were 10 yrs old. . THE FAA is out of control. Totally out of control I have hundreds of stories of the FAA looking at records for medical conditions long over more than ten years old and resolved. It is insane. You are ALL sick. Unless someone is under treatment for a condition or was within the last 5 yrs, or if it was a condition a medical doctor says is resolved more than 5 yrs ago with no recurrence THEN all the FAA needs is a letter saying it is resolved or it no longer exists for more than 5 yrs. This sick mentality to prove everything just because you are being honest is CRAZY. People would Not even tell half this stuff if the application was not full of legal criminal threats stating you have to tell everything in your WHOLE LIFE.... THAT IS INSANE. making people prove they recovered from something they clearly recovered from . but only because they were HONEST out of FEAR of prosecution..... The question on the application that states have YOU EVER HAD IN YOUR LIFE, any illness or treatment is REDICULOUS. absolutely INSANE. You are ALL sicko minded people. Have you ever had in YOUR LIFE??? are you people NUTS? you are. Even the Military does not ask a question like that.

Get rid of the cogscreen, it’s an outdated piece of shit that overrides most neurologists and doctors advice. It’s also expensive, and takes too long.
Nobody does well on the PASAT portion of it.

AOPA is a bloated organization that lives to support itself. Google the salaries. As the leader of a “non profit” should Mark Baker really earn $1.5 mill. That’s a lot of annual dues.

      @bittnerbs Před rokem +7

I look at paying the heads of non-profits like I do the CEOs of companies. If you want a 501(c)(3) to thrive, then you need someone beyond competent at the helm, and in order to get a top-tier guy (or gal) to run an organization, then you need to pay them top-tier money. If you pay somebody $100k to do the job, then you'll get what you pay for.
