Masterclass in voice acting and writing for sure. This was a powerful moment as it showed how Hatoko had always been listening intently, always tried her damnedest to understand, relate, and empathize. She could precisely relay all of the specific terms, mythologies, and references he was constantly portray. She even had some deeper contextual understandings of what they were. What she "didn't understand" wasn't the subject matter that Jurai was spitting out, but instead why he placed such existential value on these things he was in no way related to and much more importantly why he insisted on excluding her as being an outsider who just doesn't "get" it. He always viewed her as an indifferent normie and more than anything was taking her friendship for granted. He didn't understand the ways she was reaching out and he thought so little of his exclusion of her efforts.
Easily one of the most impactful and emotionally nuanced exchanges I have seen in any anime. It's really too bad they didn't spend more time exploring these dynamics and kind of just leaned into the typical genre tropes for the rest of the season. Feels like so much lost potential with this show. Haha Could've been one of the greats!

A way I saw it when self reflecting from this show, was that everyone has different interests. Not many people can fully relate on why their interests affect them the way they do, but there are similarities. She explored the subjects not out of her own interests, but to understand the guy better. He enjoys the mindset and hardship that makes a hero, the battles and journey a hero goes through to fully be legendary. He loves the tropes that create iconic stories. She likes him. Everyone can be broken down into simpler explanations on who they are and what they like, it gets complicated when experience and personal interests combine.

I say the author did an amazing job at pointing out all of those things with her speech. Adding this is a parody of the chuunibyo syndrome to her speech, it feels like a commentary on how people need to separate their enjoyment of fiction and real life relationship and behavior.
Heck, she even tells him to speak with his own words, meaning she knows he's just putting up an act and hiding behind a mask (which is the most normal thing in japanese society) instead of facing reality. Which also serves as a way of telling him (albeit in a very harsh manner) that she wants to be closer with him and is tired of him putting barriers between them.

This is one of the best self aware moments in anime.
Jurai uses all the chunibyou stuff he has accumulated to make himself feel more important than he actually is and to cope with massive insecurities he has about himself.
In the same vein he takes all the people in his life who genuinely care of him for granted. He doesn't feel that Hakoto will ever abandon him or turn her back on him so he treats her however he sees fit. Her outburst is one of the only times he actually has to examine himself and develop his character - something he desperately needs.
It's a great take on how so many people are in real life. They are so desperate to feel important or special that they are willing to overlook the people who truly care for them in order to achieve that which they think they are lacking. They look down on ordinary people as if it's a bad thing but it's all to cover for the fact that they can't fit in with such people. This scene gets glossed over all the time because a lot of people who watch it feel it hits too close to home and I can understand why that happens.
I love this scene for challengi g that though. Anything that allows you to confront the uncomfortable parts of yourself is positive for personal growth.

If you knowThe person you are talking to doesn't understand the theory of relativity, then don't just reference it and then keep going. Do the work to change what you are saying into an analogy that will explain what you are talking about. Try to understand what about the things you say could potentially confuse or frustrate people and address them yourself without making them have to ask for clarification. Otherwise it comes off as though you don't actually care whether or not they understand you you just want to hear yourself talk. Even if that's not the case eventually that's how people start to feel at least from my experience when I was younger. This scene always hit me as two people with widely differing interests trying to be friends and simply not getting along as one of them had interests that fit in with the other kids and was treated favorably by other people while he has long given up trying to fit in with people that he doesn't.

What this has to do with is one best friend doing next to nothing to understand the other best friend. The female character did her best to get through to her friend but he was hard headed and she was not, her not being able to break through that exterior when it was so constantly forced into her face does not invalidate her position as a best friend imo.
Heck, in the same vain you could say that a best friend would actually attempt to involve their so called best friend into their world in a way that was more palatable or at least try to make her feel comfortable with not being into it

I come back to watch this every once in a while. I know this sounds nerdy, but it's actually a pretty powerful scene. It comes from out of nowhere and hits like a damn truck when you least expect it, like 7 episodes into the show. You can tell that the writer and the actress really felt strongly about this subject.

I remember this scene, and I also remember that nothing happened afterwards regarding it. It seems that things went back to normal and this wasn’t addressed whatsoever. I was like really, they should’ve at least talk it out rather than just ignoring it completely.

I am very impressed by this actress. She made an incredible speech, using Japanese, English and even northern terms flawlessly. What she said this guy is indecisive, wishy-washy, lazy and just uses big words to pretend being smart and cool. I appreciate the fun of being a chunni but it sounds like this guy cannot sperate reality from his own BS world.

I saw this scene the day it aired, and it left me aghast. Really one of the moments in anime that left me crying real tears because of the raw emotion.

You can really feel how, on one hand, this is just the character talking about another character in the show, and on the other hand, the writer is absolutely seething as they line all the Light Novelists up against the wall to put them down.

I watched all that anime and I really liked that scene because of the girl's concern for the protagonist... I even cried to see how she broke down and the anime has a lot of potential for a second season.

"What you have to understand is that the concept of a character using things larger than the individual itself as a symbol when the author has a passing knowledge of the subject matter make the whole affair feel shallow just for the blatant fabrication of an image of power. I find it rather sad that generations of creators aren't willing to speak from their hearts out of insecurity. Showcasing the vulnerability of your true self isn't weakness, it is the strenght of being human with no shame whatsoever"
