As usual, watching your reaction is often funnier than the actual sketch and your sense of fun is infectious, especially when you’re watching Monty Python (Witch, Bridge of Doom, Rabbit etc). I don’t really know the American ‘Office’ but the original UK version - with Ricky Gervais - was beyond embarrassment; I had to look away sometimes, it was so brilliant. Also, check out the Borat films to see just how far a super-talented performer can go to make you squirm with embarrassment - and laugh ‘til you almost pee yourself :)))

Like so much of British comedy this skit is a societal commentary, in respect of this couple they would be traditional baby boomer generation where the husband would have been in a skilled blue collar profession or a low tier white colour profession for his entire career whilst his wife would have stayed at home as a work at home house wife. No doubt they probably purchased their house off the council in the 1980's through the right to buy scheme and have paid off their mortgage. The man then works through to mandatory retirement on a final salary pension which would be quite generous. The problem is he then finds himself in a home with a wife that he barely knows 24/7 where he is treated as an inconvenience leading to them being in an awful awkward loveless spiral in their day to day life. "So why not get a divorce?" you might ask...well for the husband that would mean him having to give up half of all that he owns and pay it to her and also pay spousal maintenance as he was the wage earner in the household. That is a huge sacrifice for someone who did all the work over the decades to finance their current life so instead they stay in a loveless marriage with the added edge that she might decide to divorce him so he has to play nice and go on holidays pretending that it is all OK. The line where he states that he was waiting for her to die is telling, with her death he would be able to move on. I have seen this happen to many couples of this generation including my own Auntie and Uncle albeit in that circumstance my Uncle snapped, had an affair then divorced my Auntie (which I had no problem with as she a a pretty awful person)
