I'm my opinion besides that 1977 win over USC, the other program defining game was the 1986 Sun Bowl. Alabama gave us a real shellacking 28-6. But after that loss Don James was so impressed with the tremendous speed and quickness of Alabama that he and his coaches started to recruit those talents for future Husky teams. He realized that big, strong and pretty fast would no longer do in the world of college football. And THAT set the tone for all of those great Washington teams to follow. Speed, speed, and more speed! On BOTH sides of the ball! GO DAWGS!

seattwa - your right. I was living in S. California in 89 and was able to attend the "Freedom" bowl that year. Huskies beat an Emmit Smith lead Florida team in Anaheim. That 89 team finished 8-4 with the win over Florida. That set up the 3 best years of Husky Football in the modern era. With a few breaks here and there, they could have easily won 3 Rose Bowls and 3 National Championships.

Agree, that Alabama loss was the dark cloud with a HUGE silver lining. I also think the last two losses to Alabama and PSU are similar. The staff and team know exactly what it takes to be elite and where our weaknesses are (e.g. OL, short DBs, short receivers, etc).
DC - I was also at that Freedom Bowl and it was total dominance of a SEC team. I was sitting among FL fans and they had nothing but praise for the UW.

Maybe someone can explain,,, at the 3:32 mark Washington 72, California 0. A week later Washington 13, California 7. Has to be an error or 2 separate California teams.
