Journey to the West is one of the greatest novel in China and greatest IP for all time for a reason. It seems that this game has really jumped out of the box formed by 80s TV series. I mean although the TV series brings common memory for the majority of Chinese and people interested in Chinese culture, but it was not the real JTTW, a Children's Edition at the most. The real JTTW is way more interesting and thought-provoking than the TV series.
Hopefully this game can open that door for all of us.

Just to add the book was originally written in the 1500's. I have read it since i was 6 to 8 (basically when I can read, not uncommon in china since this book is popular). Goku from DBZ is adaptation of the Wukong the Monkey king. In Naruto when Orichimaru first attacked the village and Saratobi summons the monkey to help him, that is the same reference to Wukong the money king. One of the Jinchuuriki is kinda based on him also. There are many other anime reference to him that I probably forgot.
Oh and as far as I know, only maybe 3 beings are more powerful than him. One is of course THE Budda (even tho it really just means the enlightened one), who might as well be the big G - GOD. The other is Guan Yi, who is this goddess that have and could reach Buddha enlightenment level but choose to stay as a small g god, for the sake of having more opportunity to interact with / help / enlighten others. The next one is Zhenyuan Daxian, or Zhen Yuan Zi. This God is basically the father of all gods in a sense. He was able to capture wukong. (but this is before SUN leveled up even further through his battle with heaven). Still, can Zhen Yui Zi over power wukong. Could be, but the novel didn't focus on him too much. Guang Yi did comment in such a way that seems like Zhen Yuan Zi is next level and more powerful than her. shrugs.

I think Guan Yin is a male bodhisattva, at least originally. His name sounds feminine in Chinese, and his appearance/outfits have mostly been depicted as feminine, especially since Song Dynasty. But Guan Yin actually originated as the "Sanskrit Avalokitesvara" who was a male bodhisattva.
So I guess in a way, Guan Yin can be both male or female, or just genderless, depending on which time period and place you're from. At least in modern China, he is more widely perceived as a female deity and motherly figure.

(he also captured him with help of other gods, and then wukong leveled himself up again when they sentenced wukong to die but it backfired) In the end of Wukong's destruction on Jade palace (and beginning of journey to the west), Wukong beat him and the other gods, causing the Jade Emperor to call upon the Budda for help. It's like invading mount Olympus and beating everyone and Zeus has to call on the big G-O-D for help.

Otherwise, this monk is just normal human. In buddhism, human are stuck in dirty, greed, easy to turn worse. Our main character monk need to train himself and wash all the thing before reaching the ecstasy land of buddha, where gold and jewel are just sand, buddhas are turned from diamond and lotus (mean very clean and pure).

    Greetings from Hungary!
I am a great fan of classical chinese literature. My first book was the Journey to the West and my second book is the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in this genre.
But i personally found to much magic and unbelievable things (Xiahou Dun eats his own eye etc...) in these stories.
My absolute favorite is my third book (not just in this genre, but from all books) is the Water Margin.
Water Margin is a medieval masterpiece! Plausible in all ways (I even feel myself anxious when the treacherous wife killed his own husband, the brother of Wu Song or when i read that Panther Head wife commited suicide) The comic parts of the drunk "Sagacious" Flowery Monk are always a relief for me :) Trivia: The Water Margin didnt respect the spoilers because in the chapter names, the book spoils itself :D And you know what? I really liked that because back at these medieval days, not every man is a crybaby edgelord like nowadays.

Guys, just remember that the Journey to the West is the for several Mangas/Animes like:
    - Dragon Ball - Son Goku it's the japonese translation of the main characters name. The Stick that can change his size. The character being a monkey (remember that in DB Classic Goku has a tail and can transform itself in a giant monkey) and a lot more.
-Naruto - One of the Bijuus (Tailed Beasts) is a giant monkey named Son Goku . Here's his introduction to Naruto himself: "I'am the Handsome Monkey King of the Water Screen Cave; the King of the Sage Monkeys, bestowed with the Dharma name of Son by the Sage of Six Paths. I am Son Goku, the Great Sage Equaling Heaven"
For me it became far more easy to understand the concepts of this game and this incredible story by seeking for this Pop Culture references.
PS: I'm just a Brazilian weeb, so probably I'm very wrong in a lot of ways, so I accept your help if anything that I said it's wrong.

Great video explaining Sun WuKong's mythology, pretty sure the old man is the mortal formed version of WuKong.
As after his many deeds and transgretions against the gods and buddha, he is punished for all eternity. The lesson of the stories of WuKong is ultimately one of teaching humility as WuKong is characterised as extremely arrogant and careless with all his powers and cunning.
Ultimately it teaches the audience that no matter how challenging or how successfully your journey becomes, in the end your biggest enemy will always be yourself. This is an extremely valuable taoist/buddhist philosophy which should be shared with as many people it can reach through whichever medium possible.

I'm glad someone is finally explaining the mythology of the game to the entire world. This novel was the first Chinese novel I read, even as a person born and raised outside of China, and my favourite of all time. The most memorable part of it, for me, was when Wu-Kong was taken and put into that pill-refining pot and "refined" for 7x7=49 days, they all assumed he'd be ashes, but he bursts out the pot beyond pissed, with the new skill of shooting "lasers" from his eyes!!

If I remember correctly, it also gave the monkey the ability to see through illusions cast by Yao (demon). It's always been the point of contention in the book since the monkey can see a trap/disguise from a Yao but the monk doesn't always recognize it because he's too gullible/trustworthy/dogmatic. Because of that, the monk would usually get tricked/captured by Yao and the monkey always had to save him and say "I told you so."

What a great video: thank you! We had the English dubbed version of the show in the UK on BBC from '79 onwards, and it was hugely popular. As a nerdy kid, I read the Arthur Waley translation of Journey to the West because of my fascination with the characters, and found that the book was even wilder! There were some missing episodes, unfortunately, but those were eventually redubbed by the English voice cast so we were able to fill in the gaps in the end.

Journey to the west is one of my all time favorite classical tales right up there with the legend of Dr. Faustus and the Tale of Genji. Alot of people are saying the second WuKong is the Six eared makack. I'm just thankful to being exposed to the story and experience so young thanks to the old early 90's rendition of the story of Son Wukong called Monkey Magic.

    • @Mushroom-Kula

If you like the Tale of Genji,I highly recommend "Dream of the Red Chamber" (aka "The Story of the Stone"), which I personally think is the most literary value of the ancient Chinese novel. Not to say who is superior or inferior, but when we introduce the Tale of Genji to others, we tend to say that it is the Japanese Dream of the Red Chamber
