My friend once bought a train ticket to Rennes but couldnt pronouce it properly.. and the train counter gave her a ticket to Reims instead!
haha aw nooo
The opposite happened to me. I was trying to go to Reims and they kept thinking I was saying Rennes. I typed it out of my phone and showed them the word. lol
I would have never guessed the pronounciation of Reims if it wasn’t for you. Great video!!
ah cool glad I coud help :):)
After learning Parisian French in school for so many years, it's nice to hear someone else than my teacher speak French. Your topic of 20 cities is a great choice.
ah cool :))
This is INCREDIBLY helpful, thank you so much!
Love the channel! I think people find it easier to be understood in English than French because there are so many different English dialects and accents. We are used to hearing things said lots of different ways, but when I say something almost correct to someone in French, they won't have a clue what I said.
Ah merci!! Yeah yeah that totally makes sense! Thanks for sharing that ;)
Wow! Great! This is amazing! I never heard this Real pronunciation ...thank you so much!
You're very welcome! :)
French pronounciation is so tough !
Keep practicing :)
thanks
@@deepasrivastava863 de rien!
No it's not
Jean Esmiol , for me it is
This really helps, thanks. I'm going from from Rouen to Orléans tomorrow.
Oh great! Have fun Edgar :)
Merci for your tres bien tutorial. J'adore your francaise lesson
This was very helpful. Thanks!
De rien :)
Bonjour! Very nice video! Merci!!
Thank you! Love this❤️🙂
De rien! Thanks for watching :)
nice...i learned a lot...i just came from paris last week and damn im going back again soon...learning how to pronounce words properly increases my confidence...merci
ah great! I'm so glad I could help a little :) and have fun next time you come to paris!
Nice lesson, Appreciated
you're welcome :):)
Very nice idea to be familiar with French sounds I hope to make other video about French celebrities and footballers
ok we'll add it to the list ;)
I recently read a couple of books about French history (one was about the French Revolution and the other was about the Marquis de Lafayette). This video helped me understand how to pronounce those place names (at least in my mind) as I was reading these books. I would love to see a video of pronunciations of famous people and events from the French Revolution.
ah great! glad it helped :)
Hi Maïa could you guys go over the regional accents in France how everyone talks. I like the Toulouse accent. And possibly do regional slang. Merci
Ok we'll add it to the list of vids to make :)
I’ve biked cross country on the “D roads” (highly recommended) and some of the small towns were really baffling: Ahun (NE from Limoges), Vineuil, Noailhac (by Collonges-la-Rouge, a neat place)
haha yeah even for me these are a bit tricky :)
Thanks for this video
That it's I'm moving to Toulouse and once in a while will travel to Nice to see my niece.
Cause these were the only cities whereby I didn't have to stress or think twice and are very easy to pronounce.
ah cool glad you enjoy Toulouse and the way they speak there :)
The trickiest of them all is ROUEN and I'm still struggling with it! One thing I learned today is to keep the syllables short and sweet and not to draw them out (as I seem to have been doing). Thank you for this very helpful video!
ah glad to hear this video was helpful :)
Beautiful!
Very practical. Lived in 'Annecy' area at one point, was hoping you'd share your pronunciation of that gorgeous city. Lots of talk about regarding all the activities in Annecy. Might make a good video topic - hiking, skiing, hang gliding, wind surfing, canals etc. Lots of vocabulary one can use.
Great videos. Merci.
ah cool great idea :)
Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome! :)
Hi, I just came across your channel. I’m going to France this upcoming summer and I was wondering if you have a video with all the pronunciations of the typical tourist locations?
Hello! Ah good idea, we'll add it to the list :)
Bonjour your vedios are good to learn appreciated
I’ve lived in Nantes for 5 months, nice city
ah cool :)
This year i was in Marseille and Salon-de-Provence.
cool :)
LOVE IT
:)
Really helpful ty
de rien!
Salut Maïa ! Pourriez-vous svp faire une video avec la prononciation des pays ainsi que des villes les plus connus ? Merci.
ah oui ok :)
This fun and very helpful!
ah cool glad you like it :)
I loved it
;) thanks for watching!
Great topic. As someone from the other side of La Manche, I'm most familiar with the port cities. I think we used to pronounce St Malo like we say St Helens or St Albans - Sunt. Now it's more likely just 'saint'. And what about Cherbourg? I'd say it as 'Cher' - like the singer - and 'burg'. Calais and Dunquerque (OK we spell that as Dunkirk!) look pretty easy, but Caen?
ah interesting :)
OH MY GOD! (Or Mon dieu I should say)
I''ve been studying french gothic architecture for years, and of course the Reims Cathedral is one of the iconic examples of the style and after all these years reading and hearing in spanish (my mother tongue) or english the word Reims this is the first time I've heard the actual pronunciation of Reims and IM SHOCKED
THanks for opening my eyes (or ears I guess)
Merciii beaucoup 😍💔🇫🇷
de rien :)
Thank you it's very helpful. Can you please make one about hospital terms or when visiting a clinic or emergency? Thank you.
Can you please do a video with famous ski areas in France, Switzerland and wherever else the French language is spoken? Some of those resorts have difficult pronunciations.
ah great idea! ok :)
Yeah, please do Chamonix and Avoriaz :)
Merci
De rien :)
You forgot some town names, like Metz, which is pronounced like messe or Montauban and Besançon which are tricky with their an/on pair. Caen, Tourcoing, Asnières, etc are interesting too.
ah cool for part 2 ! :)
That's really helpful. The ones I have been pronouncing wrong are Aix-en-Provence, Reims, Angers and Le Havre (and I have visited the last two of these cities!) Can someone do a video for Americans to help them pronounce the names of British cities :)?
ah interesting, thanks for your feedback :)
Very difficult to pronounce -- but such a helpful video. Thank you!
aw it gets easier with practice :)
Ahh..beautiful accent. I lived in Caen for awhile. Try that one on for size. :)
Really helpful.
How about Caen vs Cannes - and I think there is a third city, town, or village in France that sounds similar?
Salut, how about Pau and Poitiers? Merci d'avance:)
hi @streetfrench.org
what was the background music being used at the beginning of your video? some sort of really soft jazz really like it could you put up the link?
thanks
check out the bottom of the description we always link the songs and artists there !
Thanks for all your videos! All are very useful ❤️ could you tell what do you say at the beggining of the video? In many of them you say the same, Salut tout mo ?
Thanks ! ☺️
ah yeah I say "salut tout le monde" (hi everyone)
@@Street_French Merci beaucoup !!! ^^
I wish you had done Mulhouse!
ah I'll try to find some videos if I make a part 2 :)
Describing people from the cities would be nice too. Like if you're from Nice you're Niçois or Niçoise. My French teacher in high school called me Nançoise because my name is Nancy. -- I recognize Orleans from Jeanne d'Arc aussi. En plus "Blois" which is REALLY hard for me to say naturally as an anglophone.
ah good idea :))
i from NICE , then i am a NISSSSSSSSSSSSARD !! lol
Thank u
de rien :)
Amazing ! 😮✨
most cities have names that do not follow a certain pronunciation 🙄
Most of these I find fairly obvious...I am still not sure how to pronounce : ALES PONT-AVEN LAON, lots of places in Brittany and South of France especially. I know a lot of people struggle with place-names in Alsace/Lorraine, too.
Quelle est la prononciation pour ?
So in English conversation are we supposed to pronounce the cities in the French way or use the English interpretation to pronounce it ?
reims was the tricky one, did not expect that.
i always gave trouble with place names where the consonants that are usually silent are pronounced.
i think there's a few river names that are tricky too. saone comes to mind. could you do one, svp.
it'll be a good geography lesson as well...grand merci!!!
Salut! Ok maybe we'll thing of a more random kinda pronunciation vid, like wine regions n stuff idk :) thanks for watching!
Places names are especially tricky in french : no rules! You have to Know it or ask! ( A bit like english pronounciation, isn't it?)
@@xouxoful Ah yeah! It's a lot like that xD haha I don't how people learn proper English pronunciation! -Charlie
StreetFrench.org yes pronunciation and not pronounciation, thanks!
@@xouxoful De rien!
wow!
Hello....if you could I would like to pronounce the vowel sounds and there variations....not all in one video....but a few in detail per video...I'm enjoying your channel...David
We're making a French pronunciation e-Course that'll be available on our site :)
I tried to say "Reims" the French way at the train station and they had no clue. Thought I was trying to say Rennes. I showed them the word Reims on my phone and got to my destination. The French R just sounds like a grunt to me, hahah. Wish I had watched this video before I went to the 2019 Women's World Cup - I definitely pronounced La Havre very wrong as well, lol.
I knew all of these but I knew people who struggled with Caen. I'm glad Reims was included as that's even worse for some people. I used to live in Thonon les Bains next to Evian, where the well known bottled water is produced. I'm English and using my own language here because it is likely to be understood by more people than French is.
One thing I never learned despite being fluent in French ( because I lived there "too soon" ....before the internet arrived ) is computer / internet words. Like "right click" "copy and paste" and that kind of thing. Do the French even use "google" as a verb like we do in English ....googler ? What is a website / browser ...etc ....in French ? I have never come across a video by anyone which shows such words and phrases.
ow wow so interesting, that's a great question, I'll definitely make a video about that :))
@@Street_French Thank you....and for replying.
I like how French words have so many silent letters.
Guys, go around paris and do actual application of the lessons. I.e ordering, riding a bus, asking for directions. Etc. More power!
ah yeah great idea :)) we'll try to do something like that :)
3:11
Paris
Can u please help with the pronunciation of Marans?
You should do Reims....
T'as bien mis de côté le désert français lol enfin, c'est sûr qu'avec Guéret, Brive la Gaillarde, Aubusson, Ussel, Limoges, Rochechouard, Saint Junien, ça aurait été coton lol
Vous devriez inclure comment les prononcer dans les dialectes locales aussi.
ah ouais je vais faire des recherches
Could you do a video on how French people view Joan of Arc? She is one of my favorite personages in history.
ah yeah definitely :)
L'Alsace et la Lorraine Strasbourg , Metz , Mulhouse , Nancy, Colmar 🇫🇷🇪🇺💕
Another difficult one for us Anglos is Biarritz. We have a tendency to say "Bee-a-ritz" instead of "Bya-rreetz."
ah interesting ^^
I wanted to pronounce DIJON MUSTARD thanks
Haha nice :)
Love it but so hard
ow I understand. try to slow down the video and to repeat it many times, you'll get better I'm sure ^^
How would you pronounce Nancy? (The city.)
omG, no dislike. Good job!
:D
How to pronounce Amiens please? Thanks.
Thank you❤
De rien!
How do you pronounce tarbes
How to pronounce different countries and their languages in French?
3:20 cool i live in reims
ow cool 😊
Is there a way to foresee a French word to know how it is pronounced? Like are there rules for pronouncing?
There are rules, but when it's a proper noun (like some of these cities) you sometimes just have to memorize how it's said ;)
As an Englishman, you've got me there on Reims. I thought it was Re-ams, many people around me say this. But you sounded like you said Rance, like France?
ah no it's not Rance like France, but "Rince" like "une pince".
"IN" is pronounced like "UN=1"
@@Street_French Oh thanks, I thought you said "Rance". :-)
@@WireSniffer ah :)
@@Street_French Still difficult for me to hear sorry.
Emm... Still didn't det you after the explanation. In the video you said RUNS. "U" like "ah" sound + nosal N.
Everyone in my French class pronounces g as sh and rolls the rs because swedish people find it super hard
oh that's interesting! I had no idea
I wanted to hear Provence :3
Désolé :(
Tu parle super bien Français tes française ou anglais moi je suis française et je trouve que tu parlais hyper bien
Oui je suis française :)
How do you pronounce Arles? We visited it last year but I never knew how to pronounce it correctly!
This one it's kinda pronounced like "Arl" :) hope that helps!
StreetFrench.org thank you 😊
de rien :)
How do you pronounce this "Riquewihr" I'm going to visit because I love little towns.
ow I don't know sorry, never heard of it :/
@@Street_French Ri-ke-vir. In alsace, as in germanic country, the "W" is sound like a "V". (that's different from the north of France, near Belgium).
Omg I have been pronouncing Le Havre as 'Lee have ree' for years 🤣
How to pronounce Lourdes correctly? I do have heard different versions!!
🙏
The H doesn't exist BUT it makes us say le havre instead of l'havre 😁
Haha oui c'est vrai :)
Hi, how do you pronounce "Gaspard Gustave de coriolis" especially the word "coriolis" pleaaaaase =) ty
Bonjour! Haha not sure how to explain that through a CZcams comment but it'd be something kinda like "Cor-eeo-lee" hope that helps ;)
You have to pronounce the final S too : "Cor-eeo-lee-ss" (Accélération de Coriolis - Acceleration of Coriolis)
Cool video! We always laughing at the classes about Reims.. no one never can't remember how to say it correctly 🤪🤣😂
haha ^^
Aussi, j’ai essayé d’expliquer à mon frère comment dire Reims. Il le disait « reems
haha :)
How do you pronounce Reillane?
ah I don't exactly know. I would guess it's "Ré-yane" but it could be different
StreetFrench.org that’s how I’ve been pronouncing it...😁
@@littleogeechee223 ah cool ^^
Do you have a favorite area? Or that you like to visit?
Like a French city? Hmmmmmm I really like Paris and Maïa likes Toulouse :)
StreetFrench.org
Yes just wondered which providence or area of France you enjoyed visiting the best.... if there was one...
you are so beautiful.. i love you, by the way, i do not know any france language, but your english is decent...
T'as vu quelqu'un avec le nom de famille "Esmiol" à France?
Non :)
@@Street_French Jsais pas pourquoi je l'ai posé, plus des Esmiol habitent en Provence.
Lyon, capital of gastronomy 😋
ah oui :)
