THERE NEEDS TO BE AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION OF THIS WHALE'S DEATH. I wouldn't be surprised if the Aquarium "planned" or at least hoped for it. She was a total liability to them now that she could no longer perform. They didn't even respect her enough to keep her tank clean - you wouldn't let a guppy live there, let alone this magnificent creature if you cared about and RESPECTED her. Reports are that they were giving her rotten food. How long can an animal live like this? Who does that to an animal and doesn't face abuse charges???? And now they were going to have to bear the huge expense of returning her to Puget Sound. I don't think they wanted to put one more dime into her. Her care alone must amount to animal abuse and the Aquarium should be held accountable. I hope there's a special place in Hell for those responsible.

She was killed. Not long after a big fish comes with financial support for her move. There was never any intention to set her free. There are people involved who truly wanted her free but not everyone. They put on a show for the last few months to quiet the people. Now they cash in on the insurance money which is reimbursement for the money they spent caring for her after she was retired from performing and not bringing in any money to the aquarium.

All the Aquariums and Zoos are complying, The circuses and pet stores and every other animal related business are being monitored for other animals. What are you protesting now? When it comes to the Orcas, what few remain in captivity or come into it is to save their lives, and gives the ones who cannot be released due to injuries or other health issues in a safe and as good as humanly possible environment. At least they stand a chance at life with in those circumstances. When any animal is stressed or depressed they suffer both physically and mentally and the health declines quickly. As far as we see, these few are thriving well in the aquariums that still work with recues and rehabs. So leave them alone FFS. You are barking up the wrong tree to not look like fools. @@outdoorsmen49 There are enough tigers in captivity that we could boost the genetic diversity of populations of the ones in the wild, if we reintroduced some of the captive tigers through born free rewilding techniques. I'm not saying we should release all captive tigers as many are severely inbred and therefor would be unfit for reintroducing into the wild in order to create genetic diversity in wild populations. The main issues with releasing tigers are Chinese poachers and not enough wild spaces in Asia to release them into. India is also one of the few Asian countries with tiger populations that actually takes conservation seriously. The rest don't really give a f%^k. Pandas on the other hand are f^&ked as a species without us to help them survive they'd already be extinct. Specialist species like pandas are usually the first to go during and extinction event as they can't exploit another food resource as they are too evolved to only eat one thing. Same thing happened to both Chalicotheres and Gigantopithecus that's happening to pandas and koalas now.

With that being said I agree with the person above who said “give it a Viking burial at sea.” Tow that 6 ton carcass out to sea and let nature take its course!!

Honestly, I am old, had to study and work out how to help many wild animals adapt to captivity, grow, breed and thrive. Chameleons being one of the hardest of all. The reason; In their natural habitats, in other countries using DDT and other chemicals along with the deforestations happening at fast rates lead to severe threats to several species of animals in a small area. One specie of Chameleon were showing mutations of the rostral horns being reduced by 1" over a 10 year period in the wild. Other serious threats to that same specie was sterilization of younger generations, Lowered life spans, smaller and weaker offspring overall. The species were endangered and no option left but to try to save their existence through captive breeding programs. Other species of many different animals throughout the decades have had their own breeding programs to help repopulate them in the wild when numbers are threatened towards extinction. Please, do not protest to cutoff all hopes to save the endangered wildlife. You have no idea how wide spread the extinction threats are even in our own country and these breeding programs begin with adapting the animals to captivity. Much goes into that including diet, stress reduction methods and more. Become active in these type of programs and support them instead, be an ambassador to these beautiful and unique creatures. The sea aquariums were done before any awareness was done or studies completed. That has changed but the few left in captivity are there because those particular whales will not survive if released. Being set free is a definite death sentence.

Also most animals in zoos could not survive in the wild, Lolita included. Her mother in the wild has probably mourned and moved on, as life in the wild isn't exactly a cakewalk for animals either and death happens all the time.

That being said, the time to care about how someone ( human or non-)is treated is when they are ALIVE.
