Church is not a fashion show… Deconstructing the old me

  • In today's video I wanted to address how there is a stigma around how Christians should look, so join me in deconstructing the old me. I believe there are so many things that need to be unlearned when you become a Christian. Deconstructing is one way to do it because, not everything is just going to come naturally as a conviction. Fortunately, the Bible does provide us with everything we need in order to live a godly life.

My first time watching and I like this angle on the topic . I really liked how you made it known that this is different than the modestly topic but yes! I despised the way our elders approached the topic of dressing when I was growing up. I saw that dressing should be a personal conviction and the Holy Spirit will do that as you grow. If you know that you are modest, just wear makes you feel put together . I do go to a church that’s dressed up but I’m seeing more and more we are relaxing to jeans / pants / sweatshirts. There are more pressing issues than having a suit on. It truly causes a division.

yess! Especially when you’re a baby in Christ, it’s like you’re still on the fence about these things because of the impact of some church when indeed there are more pressing matters & That last part 🙌🏽 thank you for sharing 💕

I can relate to what you have said. I grew up in a church that prided itself on dressing the best and celebrated fashion and our traditional clothing. The downside is I used to feel stressed and anxious going to church because I always wanted to make sure I was dressed 'good' enough, and that my dress was not too tight, too simple, too short or too long. When you entered the church women would stare at you and if they had a problem with what you wore they would make it known. I sometimes did not attend church due to the stress of choosing an 'acceptable' outfit. After I left the church I vowed not to let fashion hinder me from reaching God so I did the opposite and started to be very modest and plain in what I wore to church on purpose. I went as far as wearing a head scarf for most of the year to completely reject fashion's influence on my self-esteem and worth.
Now I dress the way I want to and I'm in a much healthier environment. I love that more churches are becoming more open and less strict when it comes to policing women's bodies and what they wear. I highly encourage everyone to attend a church that accepts tehm as they are, some days you don't want to wear your Sunday best and other days you do. Church at the end of the day is about fellowshipping with like-minded people, encouraging each other in Christ and seeking God.
glad your video reached me from Australia. i was thinking about this topic.

That’s so sad to hear! This is exactly how church hurt, legalism and other stuff happen. I personally believe though that the reason is because not everyone in the church (the physical building) is actually born again, so they don’t all operate in love. Because if they did, no one would feel this way in the house of God. Church has been perverted and people are growing more and more self-centred instead of putting the focus on God. It’s also a heart issue so I pray that God renews our minds daily as well as give the wisdom to talk about these things in a biblical light. Thank you for watching and sharing this 💕

Walk by faith, not dress tight.
I mean Adam & Eve's early clothes were sewn from fig leaves so if that was all the modesty they needed then I think we can overlook dressing concerns so I fully agree with you girrrl! 🤛

I don’t know if this is a Black thing but Going to a black Church is like going to a fashion show and yes people do judge if you are not dressed up in certain attire I also have attended white Church’s it was definitely a culture shock for me, from seeing the pastor wearing jeans and shirt even some of the attendees wearing shorts and sweat pants, I feel like some people dressed to impress, and some for comfort…

I’m glad this channel was recommended to me. You’re so pretty and I love the vibes.
You got me though. The week before last I went to church dressed casually and most people seemed dressed up. so like this week I dressed up a bit more, but then everyone felt dressed down. I guess it was because it was the first Sunday so people showed out before.
P.S. I love your shirt! Want it now 👏🏾

Heyy welcome & thank you! That’s exactly what I meant, why are we so focused on how we look? The focus should be on worship towards God not ourselves 😭 the shirt is from God the father 💕

Love your videos it's a new wave of truth in how we should be towards each other now and days I gotta be a certain way to be approved by man and God absolutely not that was created and decided by man . I'm already in love with your videos . #Godfirst keep telling the truth I'm so happy that theirs people who actually aren't condemed and judgemental towards the true word of God .

If you’re following biblical precepts whoever accepts you that way great, if they don’t that’s also fine. I always have to remind myself too : you’re not living to please man but you’re living for God. Thank you for watching and commenting 💕

I love the fact this channel really touches upon subjects that every Christian experiences but no one talks about it.
Christian life is not just the sermons, but all those little day to day things. I dont know for others, but to me hearing your testimony makes it feel like we in this Christian walk together (and there’s plenty of us)

Not Christian, just Black. I understand there are historical and cultural reasons behind "wearing your Sunday's Best". It's a similar story to what one thinks when they hear "American breakfast". Potatoes, eggs, bacon, toast and/or pancakes. It's a remnant from a time when such a practice was relevant. American breakfast is rooted in a time when most people did agriculture and needed that carb and calorie packed breakfast to make it to lunch. Same way "Sundays Best" is rooted in a time where there were few cultural ceremonies for us and we took the opportunity to use church, a beacon of safety for pretty much the entire Black community at the time, and we indeed WOULD celebrate this cultural/religious ceremony.
We don't farm and we have many many more occasions or opportunities to celebrate religiously and culturally and have such access to "fine clothing" and wear it daily. Defeats the "Sundays Best" purpose. Now it's exactly as you described. Good video

I have seen the competition for attire, accessories and even hair treatments and fresh hair dyes , and various other related activities... just to look chic and fashionable... during Easter Sunday and Christmas Season, and also on Sundays.. then the ladies never revealed where they got the clothes etc.. After Church Refurbishments was a time when ladies would be literally having a show down and critiquing and remarking on dresses and other related matters, The atmosphere of the whole congregation would change.... Men didn't do much on the clothes section but certainly would try to buy a better car or SUV than the one that they had. plus hearing snide remarks..... I found it so opposite to the verse of the Bible
What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and looses his soul

🙆🏽‍♀️ that’s so sad, these things ought not to be so! But true true! God is gracious and I believe He is raising a people that are following Him in Spirit and in truth, not falling prey into the deception of the prosperity gospel because that’s what that sounds like to me sadly.
Thank you for watching and sharing this 💕

It’s a shame that the blood of Christ is not enough in human eyes to save someone in a short tight dress or should I say that God’s standard of holiness is reduced to appearance. Such statements are what causes people to hate Christ. Works are a sign of salvation not a means to salvation. Sin is sending people to hell love. Thanks for watching!

Which in both cases it is not wrong. The wrong thing is the judgement that comes with how one dresses or the pressure to dress a certain way. Thanks for sharing Moses!
