      Hi! the best thing you can do with petrified wood it's to polish. But you need tools and knowledge how to do it. From my perspective (don't take it as an advice), I would just wash it and add the rock to landscaping. If you see that the piece is solid and does not fall apart, you can explore possibilities of making "a window" (grind and polish a spot on the top or on the side to reveal the internal structure). Something like this (follow link below). You will not sell it for that much, obviously, but it may end up looking cool. Stay safe and good luck! www.amazon.com/Petrified-Wood-30lbs-Authentic-Fossilized/dp/B07RQMZJHZ

    Now I have more questions. Is the petrification process 'atom by atom' or is it more on the molecular level, molecule by molecule? There is a huge size difference. And another question, these were not modern tree species. Were they even trees?

    • @KOIstories
      @KOIstories  Před měsícem

      Hi! Both tree ferns and palms do not have "wood". You can call them trees if you think that a tree is a long-living and tall plant. I like to divide plants into grass, shrubs and trees based on size. Scientists may have different opinion. Considering that most petrified wood contains mainly silica (SiO2) in crystalline form, it's probably molecule by molecule, although, in case of crystals, it's hard to tell if a particular atom belongs to certain molecule. So, you may say that atom are building blocks. Anyway, watch the video below. Perhaps, it will improve your understanding and appreciation of the complexity of the structure. czcams.com/video/QKNLYS-vEsw/video.html

I would highly recommend to join thefossilforum community where you can get help from very knowledgeable professionals and hobbyists (www.thefossilforum.com). Post you pictures and you will have much more chances than with us to get the correct answer, may be even people who knows details about the specific locality. We have account there (KOI). How rare is chromium specimens of petrified wood? Is it better to leave as is or slab and polish?

    • @KOIstories
      @KOIstories  Před 6 lety +2

      Most of the petrified wood is better to be polished but it takes time and equipment. I would probably brought the specimen to a gem show and ask people with experience in lapidary work. They will be able to tell you if cutting/polishing is worth an effort in case of your specimen. Some people claim that chromium petrified wood is rare but I also heard that only few locations produce such specimens and in majority of the cases legality of collecting is under question. The rarity also depends on size, location and preservation. Make sure the mineral composition is indeed chromium and DO NOT RUSH to cut.

    • @KOIstories
      @KOIstories  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi! Green is a rare color for petrified wood but there are some green specimens. Look closer and try to find patterns resembling regular wood - lines, dots. Sometimes, a piece of agate could be from the petrified wood but if it small and no wood-like structures are preserved, it''s really impossible to tell. They way scientists identify species is to polish a piece and take high magnification picture in search for cellular structures.

    • @KOIstories
      @KOIstories  Před 5 lety

      Hi, I'm not quite sure what do you mean under "de SAP tubings" but most of petrified wood consists of silica with variations like quartz (SiO2), chalcedony (SiOH), agate ( cryptocrystalline silica) etc.
      Inclusions such as (S, Fe, Mn, C) give the color. The content of petrified wood depends on surrounding rock matrix. Nothing especially valuable except the fact that it can preserve cellular structure of an organism that lived hundreds of million years ago.

      @@santiagorestrepo6339 Hi! It's "petrified" wood meaning that it's not regular wood anymore. It is stone now. No organic material is preserved. Cellulose was replaced with silica. The content of sapwood (salts or organic molecules) was either dissolved (salts) or degraded into simple elements and diffused out. The space was gradually taken by silica-containing minerals that were previously dissolved in ground water and deposited/crystallized keeping the form of plant structures. At least, this is how I understand the process. Good luck!
