Beautiful walk through history. The concrete table above the grave is called a tabletop gravestone. Family members would use it as a table and gather together with food so they could “picnic with the dead”. Thank you for showing the lovely architecture and craftsmanship of earlier times 😊

I lived on pollock street in a mansion, right across from the pollock street deli ( which is no longer there) those were awesome times. It’s a great place to live and I love the history!! I agree the cemetery is one of the best to visit.

What an awesome Area/Cemetery. Doesn't look spooky at all in the daylight.

Those are called tabletop headstones they were popular back in the day. You also will find them in Ireland, Scotland, and the UK. No sacrificing going on. New Bern goes back to the 13 colonies and was the original capital of NC, not Raleigh. That's why so many prominent people are buried there.

My home town. Every October they have a Ghost walk through town and this cemetery. The ones putting it on dress on costume and tell the stories of each.
