    HI David and Erica - This was really helpful to get a feel of the campus. Even if you feel that you didn't have a lot of views, your videos are a great resource for the school to get good insight. Keep up the good work.

    I'm really interested in going but my only concerns are that I may not be able to find nerd friends there (I'm pretty nerdy lol) and the location seems a bit isolating as it is so far from any major city. Wondering your thoughts. Thank you for making this wonderful video :)

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Ryan! Engineering/ STEM majors are super prominent at Cal Poly (a lot of people feel the school favors math/scienc-y type people). You will meet a lot of people in classes and clubs that have similar interests as you. The closest somewhat big city would be Santa Barbara which is about 1.5 hours away. San Francisco and LA are both about 3-4 hours away. I never felt isolated and looking back really appreciated going to school in a college town. Everything is slo is somewhat catered toward the students since they make up such a large population there which I think it really cool snd makes for a very fun college experience!!

    Thanks Erica (and boyfriend) this was very informative. So you can take GE courses mixed in with your major classes your first year right? How many GE's do you need to take or how many classes per year. Also, how did David complete his degree in 3 years and a quarter? Can you take summer classes at Cal Poly? Please continue to do videos with David this was fun!

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi! I would say most students take between 3-5 classes per quarter depending how many units each class is (between 12-20 units/ quarter is typical). Yes, you will be taking a mix of major classes, support classes, and GE classes every quarter. Summer school is available at Cal Poly but it's pretty expensive so we both took many online courses through community college that transferred to Cal Poly. David was able to graduate early by having AP credit from high school in Calc 1, Physics 1, and a few more so he didn't have to take them at Cal Poly. He also took a handful of community college courses over the school year and summer for transfer credit.

    So is it possible to switch majors early into your first year? since I know you said that cal poly gpa is very important. The major I applied with and got accepted with isn't really what I'm interested in as much and I was wondering if in order to change my major, I would have to wait a while before switching?

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety

      I have heard of some stories of first quarter freshman talking with the head of the college they are wanting to switch into and them helping them make the switch from the beginning. It would definitely take you going in and talking to some people for them to help you switch so early.

      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety +1

    I have a question, you said you can camp on the campus, is that open to the public? Or just students?

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety

      Hmm I’m not sure about that but as long as you are a responsibly/ respectfully camping I don’t think anyone would bother you or ask you to leave. You have to hike out to the camping areas from campus but there are no check points where someone would make sure you were a student. Parking would probably cost a lot on campus for overnight so for that reason they probably don’t get a lot of campers who aren’t students.

    As you guys were talking about the majors, I was thinking about that for a bit. Both my wife and I got our majoring in our mind and finished off with it although we kinda knew the possible career paths. Our daughter is going through the process of trying to pick the right major. I really believe it kinda hard to switch if you take too many classes in one major or it will definitely take an extra semester or two to finish off the degree in the new direction. I would highly suggest for any student to try really hard to focus on two similar types of majors if they can't pick one. If the majors are radically different, the new major might be too hard to switch into. If one is going in the engineering direction, you could take the foundation class for most engineers and you wouldn't miss a heartbeat on graduating on time with an engineering degree.

    • @alaluke7159
      @alaluke7159 Před 3 lety

      I would try to work hard and spend a lot of time doing some self-investigation or self-evaluation on possible career paths before starting college if possible. I guess someone could pick the undecisive major and take a few classes in the potential major and go that route. Again, this might set you off in a graduate several quarters or semesters later.

    • @EricaZetterquist
      @EricaZetterquist  Před 3 lety +1

      that is great advice! a lot of my friends aren't working in anything related to their majors from Cal Poly but still loved everything they learned!

    • @alaluke7159
      @alaluke7159 Před 3 lety

       @Erica Zetterquist This advice was just some ideas I came up with since we got more focus on finding out major and we went to the site of flowcharts.calpoly.edu to find out the details of each major and the specific classes one would take based on their major. I didn't realize that majors that were so different would take some extra time to finish in the new major. Thanks for sharing out the some of the people you knew at the school did have a chance to use the major. and glad they enjoyed learning at the school.
