In this video, I will show you how I set up a hoist in my garage to remove the camper shell from my wife's truck.
This set up allows one person to do the job alone. No heavy lifting and storage after it is lifted off the truck.

Love how these guys say, "Pretty simple."
@@CP-nf9my me too!
This is exactly what I was looking for-we have the same Leer Locker drawer in our Leer Cap and I needed a way to lift it off our truck. Great video!
This is super dope! I doesn’t look easy to me but the result couldn’t be better.
Funny that I just bought a shell a few days ago and was thinking about this but when looking for ideas to build a kit for the inside CZcams promoted THIS video close to the top so I will bookmark it till I'm ready to do it in the spring. Hand Crank is good because mine only needs to be lifted once or twice a year to use the truck bed to haul stuff for a few days
Hi hi, this was and IS the best idea of a camper shell hoist system I love it!!!👌😍 From a wife to an other wife, thank her for her request. That is what I told my husband I wanted.
Thank you so much for the complement. I will be sure to tell my wife what you said.
I am subscribing to your channel even before I undertake the project, since you are a cut above the guys who ignore questions. Well done.
Thank you very much!
Very helpful video. Thank you for providing a parts list.
Thanks for watching!
Great idea! I want to do this for my truck bed hard tonneau cover, but I would use a Warn Pullzall instead of a winch. That way you’re not tying up the winch just for that.
That sounds like it would work. I originally thought it was going to be a 'seasonal' thing that we would remove it or put it back on, but with how easy it is to do, we have removed when needing to haul something and random other times. Thanks for the comment!
Best design I’ve seen. Thanks.
Good stuff 👍 thanks for the 💡 idea.... My cap is aluminum (very light ) but I want to store it up at the ceiling like this ...thanks again 👍 are the chains just for extra safety ?????
Sorry for taking so long to respond, I just saw your question. The chains are there to take the load off of the cables. I raise it and put on the chains then relax the cable tension. It is safer in my opinion too.
That is really great. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for posting, very nicely done. good idea
Thanks!
Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for posting.
Thanks for commenting. Appreciate the feedback.
Thank you for posting. Very nicely made and good video.
Nice job. Thanks for the tips! 👍🏻👍🏻
Very clean. Nice work!
Nice
Great job. I have the hand crank one. I’ll have to try this one. Do you know if you were to put it on the Yakima rack portion would it holds the weight?
I think it depends on which shell you have and how it attaches to the shell. If the rack has removable components, I would not hang from those since most shells are fairly heavy.
awesome!
That’s sweet!
Question your eye bolts how they are mount in the channel?
I have the sam Sport Cap and really like your idea however concenred about the point load of the eyebolt penetrating the topper and suspending all that weight from it. Have you had any stress cracks on the topper at those 4 points or does it work just fine. Please advise
Zero issues with stress cracks. I do have the Left Locker installed on those points which provides a larger surface area to support, but that could be accomplished with a large flat washer. Thanks for watching!!!
@@ContractorsPOV Thanks for the reply, what is a "Left Locker"?
@@benlombardo9485 Lol, autocorrect + proofread fail... LEER Locker. truckoutfittersllc.com/product/leer-locker/
Great Job ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks! I've since added a few things to make it more heavy duty. Didn't want to take any chances.
well done
Do you think the truck bed tie down things you can get for the bedside that retract back into the bedside would work if I cut a hole for them in the top and then use construction adhesive to glue it to the top of the camper top. So that it's not a visable loop until it's pulled up out of the mount surround.
As long as you have something from underneath supporting with a bigger footprint so it doesn't pull through, I think it's a great idea.
Thanks. What is the lightest strut metal you would recommend?
You can use the deep or shallow strut found in most home improvement stores, but I wouldn't use thinner than that. It is a lot of weight.
Thanks for your video! Question: How long were the eye bolts you used? I found 2 1/2" at Home Depot but there is still room to screw into the strut. Just want to make sure it will hold the weight before I use. Thanks again for the helpful video!
I am currently making some modifications to the strut and eye bolts. Instead of just using the strut nuts alone, I'm backing them up with a square strut washer sandwiched with a regular nut to prevent any slipping out of the strut.
Any concerns with the pulleys used? The ones I’ve found state do not lift or hang with the pulley. Sorry for the questions!
@@ronmiller1731 love the questions, don't worry about it. I would definitely make sure they can handle at least 600lbs. I had one of my eyebolts almost open up on me. Went with much heavier to replace. It wasn't from lifting and letting down, but it bounced when one of the links in the chain rolled straight. Did want to take any chances. Also, you'll need good corner anchors. Lots of stress on those.
I’m subbing ‘cause I want you to have more subs
Where did you find that metal channel?
How much do you think your topper weighs with the Leer Locker installed.
Around 400 pounds +/-. Two decent size grown men couldn't lift it but 4 didn't have a problem.
@@ContractorsPOV I have basically the same setup on my 2020 Super Duty, but wasn’t sure how much it really weighs. Just making sure I buy a big enough winch to do the job
@@Merritt3246 most important is the anchors you use to support the chains and cables. I switched to welded eyelets because one opened up but otherwise this is my favorite project.
@@ContractorsPOV Thanks for the help. This video was very helpful!
@@ContractorsPOV do you worry about those eye bolts leaking, or pulling out, holding all of that weight?
What type of track mount did you connect the pulley too? Is it just strut channel nuts with an eye bolt through it? What is the part number?
Yes, just strut nuts with eye bolts. The home depot numbers are: Internet #202443277
Model # ZA1001/4EG-10
That's great for storage. I just use tennis balls.
What did you use to secure the eye bolt to the Strut Channel?
Probably strut nuts.
Studs in the ceiling are called?......Ceiling Joists...geez...
Brilliant!!! Sometimes the words escape me while I'm shooting a video and it isn't worth going back to record the whole thing over again.
@@ContractorsPOV He was just joisting you...
This a great idea.. Do you by chance know how heavy your camper shell is? I have one that is about 250lbs and looking to create the similar setup you have in this video.
The one shown in the video is over 350#. It has a leer locker in it and it's heavy.
@@ContractorsPOV cool, Mine is about 250lbs.. I found this wench online. Do you think this would be good enough? It says its only 12v though not 120v . or this one? www.amazon.com/RUGCEL-2000-lb-ATV-Electric-Winch/dp/B07V8JZK5K/ref=sr_1_31?dchild=1&keywords=120+volt+winch&qid=1591735086&sr=8-31
@@codyfullmer24 right, the 120V is a little more, and you would have to decide if you want to connect it to a battery when you want to use it. I built mine with the idea that I wouldn't be around and my wife would be able to do alone, and I didn't want her to have to connect a battery. If that's not an issue, you can use whatever you want. I've even seen it done with a hand crank wench. But again, I wanted something my wife could use by herself.
@@ContractorsPOV ok, great. 1 more question and then I'll try to stop bugging you.. ha.. The I bolt you use in your shell, what size is that? and what is that black washer looking thing on top that went with it, is that rubber? Also the loops you are attaching the caribeaner to, to the truck shell.. What are those loops, they don't look like you just looped the cable and clamped it.
The strut nuts tend to rotate and become unseated when I begin to lift the shell...thoughts on how to prevent this?
I drilled in self tapping screws on each side of the nut, through the strut. I guess you could use a clamp, but the self tappers worked.
