  • Huge improvement in sound quality and bluetooth reliability over the stock unit. Loving Android Auto and the overall speed of the deck.
    Backup cam, screen dimming and steering wheel controls all work.
    Install was pretty easy with all the info from the NASIOC and WRXClub forums.. Especially SVXdc and "megs wrx".
    If anyone is interested in the install, here's the parts list, wire diagram, and 28 pin changes.

      @@Waxmonster747 I'm not sure if it depends on the Forester model, but I'm coming from the nearly bone-stock base model (with upgraded rims and roof rails) and so the only control over the little dash display is via the toggle under the hazard button.

    Thanks Adam, i have the AX-3000 Sony Head Unit inside a small Suzuki Swift and I put 4 of Sonys New 4-way Coaxial Speakers with 2nd generation HOP aramid carbon fiber matrix woofer for powerful bass and clear highs. Speakers rated at 350 W Total and 60 Watts RMS and the sound is very loud, and very clear. The DSO function lifts the music off the floor and brings it up to the dash and it works very well. The Base works great, the EQ is great and Android Auto works great as well. I love the reverse camera and adjustable guidelines when you change into Reverse the screen shows up whats behind you and where you are using the guidelines. It plays Videos with good quality and sound as well. Thanks Adam again. On the AX-3000 when playing a song, and you want to fast forward to a good part, just touch the next track icon and keep yr finger on it, and it will fast forward thru the song till you let go.
    My Microphone just sits on the top of the centre steering column but closer to the speed odometer so its directly in front of my voice and it picks my voice no problem. cheers KiwiKev

    Just finished my install on my 2016 wrx. I ordered from Crutchfield and they sent me an iDatalink Maestro instead of the Axxess AX-SUB28SWC-6V. Long story short: My SWC didn't even work with the iDatalink, so I ditched that and got the 3-pole 3.5mm male audio cable + the 6v adapter like your wiring diagrams shows. Everything works now!
    I did have 1 question for you though. Do you know if there is any cigarette lighter replacement part somewhere that has a usb port instead? I currently have USB-2 unconnected but would like to replace the cigarette lighter with some grommet or adapter to feed the usb cable into instead.

    Thanks for posting, Adam. Quick question regarding your steering wheel controls. If the screen the head unit’s displaying features a back button at the top left (in let’s say an opened menu list), does the back function on your steering wheel return you to the home screen like it would if you were to press the back button on the screen itself?

    • @adambarichello6392
      @adambarichello6392  Před 6 lety +1

      Great question. No, it doesn't. The deck doesn't have a "back" or "return" button so you there's nothing to map a button to for that. You can map next/previous track, volume up/down, play/pause, answer call/hang up, voice (which works great with Android auto), ATT (mute) and source.

    I know you said this doesn’t need a Maestro for the steering wheel controls, but if my car already has a Maestro installed, can that connect to and interface with this? Would the stereo still recognize the buttons and still be able to program / customize the controls like you did in the video?

    • @adambarichello6392
      @adambarichello6392  Před 2 lety +1

      Hmmm...I don't have any experience with the Maestro unit so I'm not sure if it will work. I believe the way the Sony deck works is that it recognizes the different resistance values that each steering wheel button represents. Then let's you assign that value (button) to a feature (aka volume up). If the Maestro outputs similar resistance values it'll work. If it outputs something else then no (i.e. some kind of digital data).

      @adambarichello6392  Před 5 lety

      Yes, the WRX stock usb port that is located in the armrest box will work but I didn't want to use that port. The reason is that then I'd have a cable from my armrest box to my phone. I wanted the usb port in the opening under the deck so you barely see the cable. Just a preference thing. Just be aware that the Sony deck has 2 ports but only one can be used for Android Auto and video playback. The other is just for charging (0.5a) usb mp3 storage.

    I also have a 2016 wrx and I've been considering upgrading from the stock 6.2 starlink to this head unit. Seems to be going for $300 currently.
    The reviews seem to be very mixed. Do you still like it a year later? Is it still buggy or was Sony able to address the issues you called out via a firmware update? I'd primarily be using it with android auto.
    Thanks!

    • @adambarichello6392
      @adambarichello6392  Před 4 lety +1

That's only happened twice to me since I've owned the deck. Android Auto works awesome. I use it almost exclusively on the deck. For the money and ease of installation, you can't beat this deck.

You’ve mentioned that you didn’t use an extra module but spliced some wires into the steering wheel control jack on the back of the headunit. Did you follow some sort of guide to do that? @adambarichello6392  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, if you have a look at the bottom of the video description you'll see a link to a wiring diagram I used. The plug I used (a standard 1/8" earphone jack) needs to be striped and the 3 wires you see need to be attached to the correct pins on the harness. I've listed the correct pins on the harness for the 2016 but you should be able to find a diagram for the pin layout for your year easily on the net.

      Hey Adam, another quick question for you. I just ordered my xavax5000 and it’s arriving by next Friday and I wanted to order the steering wheel control wire as well. You mentioned that it’s a regular 3.5mm jack wire. Was the connector a 2 pole connector or a 3 pole connector ?(like Apple headphones that have inline microphone). Also, would any standard 3.5mm jack wire work? Sorry about the questions !

      @@JapmeetSingh oh gosh, don't apologize for questions. Glad that I can help. Yes, a regular 3.5mm cable will work. I didn't even buy one. I used a spare extension cable I had lying arrive the house. It was a 3-pole (has 3 contract surfaces separated by plastic). So when you spice it, you should have 3 wires. Then you connect those 3 wires to the wires/pins on the harness...as seen on the wiring diagram in the comments.

      Hi Noodlz. So THE place for info on our Subies is here .... forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25 That's where I got all my info. I'm a little confused because you talk about the "factory 28-pin", but doesn't the 2011 models have a 20 pin? I found a few pages that talk about only a 20 pin. Here's one. ae64.com/20-pin-pinout.htm
      I also found a thread about installing a different deck in a 2011 here forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2493168&highlight=2011
      That being said, in the 20 pin setup, I don't see anything about a factory reverse wire. You may have to do a little research on how you can supply a "reverse" signal to the deck.
      For the red/black backup question, again I'm using 28 pins and I think you're only using 20 I'd do some research. But the video output of your backup camera should go into the RCA input of the deck....not through the hardness like mine. My backup video signal goes though the hardness but I think yours is an aftermarket camera, right? It's that's the case it wouldn't go through the factory harness. The Sony hardness red is 12v accessory power (when the key is turned on) and the black us ground.
      I grounded everything using the black ground wire on Sony harness. But you could use any bare metal that you see under the dash. You can always test with a voltage tester to see what gives you a good ground.
      I'd post your questions & pics on the nasioc forums. I'm sure you'll find some 2011 STI owners that know why more about that car than I do.

    Hello I had this radio professionally installed the other day in my 2012 hyundai veloster. Are you still having the issue with the crossfader after the firmware update? @adambarichello6392  Před 4 lety +1

      When you say crossfader do you mean the Balance/fader or the crossover? I haven't had issues with either.
      In terms of the distortion, that's a tough one to diagnose. Couple of possibilities. I don't know the Veloster but it may have a stock amp that the installer didn't bypass so the Sony deck is trying to force its way through the amp. Also that amp may not be powered any longer hence the lower coming. I would ask the installer to double check. Could also be a power issuemaybe the deck isn't getting enough power and starting at 36. unfortunately can't test the volume at 36 this way you would because I have my hooked up to an amp and not using the amp that is built into the deck.

They work fine normally but when I try to use the fader it lowers their volume but only for the rear speakers. Do you experience this same issue?

      @adambarichello6392  Před 4 lety

      @@MrBOBSHANANANA Hmm. Not sure I follow. The fader should send all the audio to the front or back or both depending on where you drag the dot on the fader setting. If it's not gradually fading from all front, to mixed, to all rear as you adjust the setting, something may be wrong. With the deck or the way it's wired. Just curious...what firmware version so you have installed on the deck.

      You can switch to the camera input any time but it will be blank until you put the car into reverse. The reason is that the camera only gets power when you're in reverse. I was thinking of wiring it through that little compartment in front of my stick shift and mounting my phone on my air vent. And, was the steering controls easy to set up? Thanks and great video!

      @@honse That's exactly where I put USB1 on my car. USB2 I wired to the existing USB port in the center arm rest glovebox. Once the steering wiring is done, the set up on the actual deck is super easy.

    • @adambarichello6392
      @adambarichello6392  Před 6 lety +1

      The ports are actually cables attached to the actual unit. I routed one of them so it comes out in the storage area under the temperature control knobs.
      The second one is plugged into the stock USB port using a harness. That's the port that is located in the armrest.
      In terms of installing, there are tons of videos that sure how to get the stock unit out on CZcams. Then you can use the parts list and wiring diagram in the video description.

    • @adambarichello6392
      @adambarichello6392  Před 5 lety

      If you've done an install before, it's not that hard. I've done a few in my past cars. Just be patient. I spend the time to solder all the connections. If you use quick connects then it'll take less time. The hardest thing is taking the 2 bolts at the back off the stock deck to release it. It's such a pain. But there are some videos on you tube that show how to find and remove then.

    • @adambarichello6392
      @adambarichello6392  Před 5 lety

      You do need something to step down the voltage from 12v from down to 6v for the backup camera. I used a different part. Have a look at the parts list in the description for this video.

      You can only change the colours in the display settings. You can't change to a custom wallpaper. I was hoping you could do that with a firmware upgrade but I haven't anything about that yet.

      todd smith Yes, you can listen to audio and make calls via Bluetooth just like any modern head unit. But you can't do maps on the Sony screen until you connect with the USB. The reason is that the mapping is done via Android Auto or Apple Car Play which needs the USB. It doesn't support wireless Android Auto.
