    After 42 years of alternating being active and not active, you are right in that those common words become phrases we look for during more rapid exchanges and they start to come back when we have been away for a while. We do it automatically, but it sure helps even better to do it by intention. Thanks for the useful video! Cheers es 72, Davey - KU9L

    I’m on board with this for sure. When hunting it’s pretty much everything you said and when activating I would add listen for “at” then a park number. Hunting parks is a great way to get comfortable with cw after you’ve learned it. Learning to hear words is very important and will boost your confidence way up.

    Nice video and over the years I can copy my call at 30 wpm+. I can make the normal DX/contest exchange at 20 to 30 wpm, but I can't send fast enough with paddles and use the PC instead with a K1EL Winkeyer.

    I appreciate these very practical tips, Evan, and breaking down the key elements of preparation.

    Very good info, I like to chase POTA with CW, I do recognize a lot of what you said. I’ve only had one official POTA activation with CW last October, I prefer chasing over activating, for now.

      Thanks for watching! Yeah, hunting is fun for sure. I just finished an activation with 186 contacts. My brain is about fried 😂

    Great content. I am beginning my CW and I am using every tool I can . I did not under stand why all I would hear watching my favorite Pota vids was …… -., over and over. 😅

      Thanks! Yeah, it can be confusing if you don't know what you're listening to. When I first started learning, I would watch Thomas Witherspoon's videos and wonder what Dah di di dit Dah di Dah over and over meant. Once I learned what BK stood for, and how it was used, it made SO much more sense LOL. Thanks for watching!

    Mistakes? I make a ton of them when sending with my paddles as I get older. I need to work on this key. Thanks for the video.

    I'm from the 20 wpm testing era. Never did get the real hang of CW even though I somehow managed to pass the test after two tries. I don't think everyone's mind is built for it. It's unfortunate for me since I'm well aware of the benefits. Sigh.

    I am either going to get the Expedition or a Magnetic Classic. If you practice the shorthand on air during activation sessions, you learn them very quickly!

      It's a really nice key. To be perfectly honest though, I prefer my UR5CDX key, and it's half the price. You should check them out.

    Another one to recognize is rrr for Roger Roger Roger

    Awesome stuff, this is really helpful and I appreciate you putting it out there. I watch K4SWL videos and definitely struggle to copy but I feel like I hear lots of "RR" from hunters when coming back to the activator as in "Roger Roger." This seems common after the activator replies with the call sign and signal report- seems like the hunters commonly reply RR and send their signal report and state- am I hearing that correctly?

    • @EvanK2EJT
      @EvanK2EJT  Před rokem

      Yes, you are. RR is very common. You'll often hear it instead of a BK when the convo goes back to the other operator and they respond with RR. It's hard as a new op because you don't always know what to expect. Most activators stick to the "script" so to speak, but every once in a while someone goes off the rails, and if you can't copy at the speed they're sending it can be a bit frustrating. Just do the best you can do, and copy what you can copy. The more you do it the easier it gets. It'll get to the point where instead of hearing dits and dahs, you'll hear the conversation going back and forth as words and phrases.
