A living legend. The man is the absolute best. Always and still a huge fan of his still at 53, I love watching him play and listen to speak! 🤘
Nuff respect to Mama and Papa Smith for allowing Mike and the fellas to spread their wings and fly. Effigy of the Forgotten, Breeding the Spawn, and Pierced from Within were/are death metal masterpieces that have withstood the test of time. The aforementioned wouldn't have existed without cool parents that gave kids leeway to explore their creativity.
Mike Smith is a legend. He laid they ground work they every other extreme drumming followed.
Love ya Mike!!!!
Mike was and will be the only suffocations drummer
Breeding the Spawn is still my favorite album. The songwriting was head and shoulders above everyone else. I love the production due to the fact the bass work can be heard in all its glory. Frank sounded unhinged. The riffs evolved from beginning to end without repetition and the drumming was punishing. I prefer the original recording to the newly recorded versions. Chris Richards needed to be in place for the new recordings to work for me, his playing is second to none. I wish they would do a royal remastering treatment to it. It deserves the love…
Glad to know he's in full approval of all the slam bands coming out. Hope nobody forgets it's SUFFOCATION with Mike who brought that sound to light
I love Death Metal, but I can't stand Slam. I can't approve that statement.
Mike is one of the best drummers alive today
I was so sad to see Mike leave suffocation. One of the best metal drummers of all time. I'll always support you and whatever you do.
Legendary ! He and Frank Mullen = best lineup in deathmetal
Holy shit! Mike Smith
My favorite Death Metal drummer ever and I absolutely love the Breeding album too. I listened to it for about 6 months straight when it came out.
"the REAL Suffocation" Loved when Mike said that! I honestly believe if it were not for Mike, Suffocation would not have become what they did. Still have my original Effigy t-shirt from 92 I think it was when I seen them in Detroit! Frank still actually had hair LOL After their set me and a few friends somehow ended up hanging/talking with Mike and Terrance for a little while and that was cool as all shit and is one of my favorite concert memories of the many, many I have from the 90's Detroit death metal concerts at various venues. I always jump to the mental visual of the red stage lights flashing during Jesus wept. Been a suffo fan from day 1 and for a while even ran a suffo fan forum called infecting the crypts which was an offshoot of a cannibal corpse fan forum called tomb of the mutilated. I still have saved the AIM chat interview I did with Guy I think it was, also think I did one with Derek as well.
Just wanted to say as I continue watching, that was pretty crappy to just shit on slam man LOL Like all music there is good and bad bands/songs in every genre. Just because you want to low key play the death metal elitist card and shit on something you seemingly don't care for is always a cheap, sleazy shot man..We all supposed to be on the same team!..and I love how Mike defended that shit and encouraged it :) When he said those SLAM moments were their most happiest times, that's what a good slam does and good bands do it right. Not everyone loves a melodic, technical, symphony of a song all day long every day. And when suffo did that shit I coined a phrase I still use now since the early 90's.. I call those breakdowns/slams a SufoGasm regardless what I am listening to when the change up slam hits LOL. To me personally, Suffocation is almost the father of slam to a certain degree.
what a great interview ... Mike Smith is a living legend.
Many thanks to Mike for the inspiring drumming. My death metal drumming journey starts since Suffocation 2006 album Suffocation. Still playing this tracks with pleasure and doing my best to learn Smith Blasts. It's not so easy, to play with closest tight dynamic. Actually I still don't know who else can play tight like Mike, no one can hit a hi-hat like that, such a unique style
31:30 too 37:30 the most realest Suffocation Fact! Mikes word's describing that fact is amazing.
His parents are inspirational
Thank you for interviewing Mike. He’s a decent and real human being and an amazing musician and nobody has this mans skills on the drums. My god! Best wishes! Subed and liked
A lot of important insights in this interview, not only to understand what happened to the band but in music business in general. I like when bands refreshes, it is always risky and you ain't going to like everything, but it keeps you attentive to what they do. I didn't consider this from a band member's perspective, from a legacy and economic standpoint. Mike is a standup guy, respect!!!.
Один из лудших !!!
sweet interview. fascinating to hear mike's thoughts on current suffo
Mike Smith is beyond legit! Bad Ass Artist🤘
Such a cool interview, the way it should be in my opinion. It doesn't feel like the artist is interrogated, shackled on a chair with a spotlight on them, it feels like a fan talking to an artist backstage just with good flow.
We always try to just let the artist speak while saying as little as possible.
This is what I love about Nick's interviews. He lets the artist say what he has to say without interruptions or over-lengthy setups to questions. It makes the interviews really fun and engaging.
Groovemaster Mike!! Effigy is still a masterpiece of sonic tightness and brutality! Legendary release!! 🤘🤛 Keep on groovin', rhyming and ofc blasting! Such an interesting chat, cheers from The Netherlands!
Really nice and cool interview with a Mike Smith, he seems like a really down to earth and kind human being. 👍 🤘👌
Legend! Mike got me into death metal.

hails from Australia.
This episode was fantastic. Mike is a legend and i love how honest and passionate he is here.
I've been lucky to see Suffo live many times with different line-ups, including twice with Mike.
Didn't know he had a podcast... gonna check it out for sure.
And this episode made me wanna listen back to breeding the spawn and the early stuff that had the shitty production :)
EDIT : also : mad respect to Mike's parents... Very inspirational !
Greetings from Pennsylvania!!! 😎 👍
Спасибо за интерьвью! Очень приятный человек, без понтов.
Thank you for interview!
Great talk, just got into his podcast some really in depth discussion.
Great interview! Mike is an awesome dude, met him at a Suffocation show once, super humble. I picked up his Grimm Real CD from that show. \^^/
Mikes the real deal, he don’t wear no diaper on his face because he knows his history as everyone should but most don’t have the backbone in America unfortunately, met him in st.paul, MN cool cat
Meet that band and humg out for days with them at Metalfest. Super rad dude. We party hard.
Legend
An absolutely exemplary interview, I have emailed Mike a couple times and he always responded in kind and truth. I know exactly what you are talking about in Catatonia, I mentioned it to Jerry on Scale It Back as well to examine. I believe it was taken out on Despise the Sun to make it leaner and faster, no idea fully though. Another good one would be to ask about Crippled, Sick, and Starving.
You were the first one to notice and I thought of that comment at the time. If you have links, I will send them to Mike
@@hessianfirm Sure, let me see what I can do.
@@hessianfirm Here is my favorite show of Suffo in 93 with an exact time stamp of the riff in question: czcams.com/video/0EvkHqE9qhA/video.html
@@hessianfirm Here it is in 07 going right into Hobbs solo: czcams.com/video/0EvkHqE9qhA/video.html
Thank you for mentioning that and that you saw my comment, let me know what he says about it.
54:11 so true
Even 19 years ago Mike Smith was I have no words ...................................................................ON THE TOP AS LONG AS THE MUSIC LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAXIMUM DETONATIONS ....................................big dream to me to one day shake your big hand of the hardest hitter than ive heard from AFAR!!!
Dope interview Mike comes across like a dope individual. It sucks to hear about the bands struggles over the years but it’s understandable. Hard to recreate the teen years when you got all the responsibilities of an adult and 4-5 individual lives tryna come together. I still feel like Pierced, Souls, Self titled and Blood oath were good releases tho. You can def hear that Breeding was the peak of creativity tho. I feel like they really pushed tech death with that album. Thx for the interview really well done.
slam is awesome
Yo mike sup bruh bleed on!!!!!!
By the yay iv beeb on best drummer list on 2005 with dave lumbordo and sandoval but i repete im listening to MIKE SMITH Its my choice specially after i tape live suffocation chos when Mike came bach I still got it since 2005 becose i came back after i left my ban And Im still more than impress.
Probably the sickest drummer in the early 90s along with Sandoval. Suffocation lost their edge once Cerrito and Smith left the band. They needed those two to carry Suffocation strong song writing abilities. They would never admit to that though.
Something every actually original artist of note realizes: Don't listen to much! All music off! What happens when you play...?
If you're always listening to something else, hearing everything that's available, when are you going to find time for yourself? You're going to be duplicating what you hear.
Reminds me of getting over the whole Beethoven fiasco. Just convoluted echoes of Haydn>Mozart.
Imagine if classical composers used his advice: you write what comes out of practicing hundreds of hours of playing with your gang, your team, shutting all influences off. Perhaps then we'd have worthwhile classical music.
Shoutout to the big hawmie Mike!
Mike is also right about the business side. I've learned thru trial and ere that it should only be ONE person taking care of shit. It's the reason why I quit my last few bands. Suddenly everyone wants to be a chief and nobody wants to be the Indian. It's bullshit and hard as hell to make people understand that.
Words to consider!!!!!!
The difference between the fake synthetic metal of piece-wise technical wanking, and the organic emergence of true living monsters of sound.
HI Master Mike Im lurning all left side now Im listening to you evry day I also very like all what you say And when Il be a millionaire Il pay for suffocation come back together Im in montreal and if your not there im not there thankyou if you can watch my kataklysm drum solos. love you an a half!!!
This is not a podcast ?
It is.
You use the word legend loosely, but here it sticks.
Mike Smith should listen to some Ghostemane. Cheers!
GREATEST DRUMMER OF ALL TIME!
