I remember as a kid my boy scout meeting were at the American legion. After meetings we would sneak out the back and go over to the bar side when we were waiting for parents to pick us up. They would fry up smelts on Wednesdays and the lady would give us a basket of fried smelts. It was my favorite day.
I grew up in Arizona so fresh fish is rare but my questions is: The bones are they a lil crunchy? Do you even notice em? I'm guessing it gives some unique texture.
When I was a kid I went “smelting” with my Grandpa and Dad. We would dip nets in the River or lake (usually Superior) now and then while people stood around laughing and partying until eventually someone pulled out a huge net full and yelled, “They are running!” My Dad, Grandpa and everyone else would just dip huge nets on the end of poles and pull up smelt and dump them into huge 20 gallon brand new garbage cans. Entire towns full of people around the UP would have smelt fries from these catches everyone would share.
ya now you can still dip net them in the spring when there running 2 quarts a day i think 🤔 I missed it this year definitely going out for that next year !!!
Love freshwater smelts. I've only dipped for them in the spring and occasionally caught a few fly fishing for trout. Toss with seasoned flour and cornmeal and fry in butter. Mmmmm.....
I live in Az. Now, from northern Pa. I watch you and friends, GREG love it all. Did that kind of living off land for days before it was popular, thanks,GOD BLESS!
I must say I have been watching your videos all weekend, non-stop and here it is 2:40 a.m. I use to trout fish in my younger years all the time. We would go smelting in Dresdan at Smitty's smelt shacks. Big river smelts! I am now 68 yrs old and living in Freeport. Born in Lew., raised in Auburn.
I know its been a while.....but I figured out why you won Alone. You created a masterful shelter. Greg didn't. He did not have your creature comforts. I just binged watched that episode again. You are the man.
I've been in Tokyo and deep fried smelt with their eggs still inside is a delicacy, you can find it in grocery cooked food section or in obento shop anywhere. These are soooo good to eat. Me and my 9 y/o son love watching your vids together. Keep it up and God Bless.
13:36 minute mark. I can agree with Zach, making your own lures/ sabiki rigs is overwhelmingly pleasant. And boy when they work better than the bought alternatives it’s a special type of satisfaction achieved. I make bigger daylight sabiki‘s for pier fishing for Atlantic mackerel. Imho thee best patterned and most veracious shoaling predatory fish. Beautiful when cooked or smoked and incredible returns when rendering for oil.
Zachary Fowler is an absolute angel of a human being! I real role model that I aspire to be! Thanks Zach for what you do and how good of a guy you are! ❤️ from South Eastern New Hampshire
I have a magazine from 1997 when I was a kid making flies in Alaska, it was awesome times, my mom kept it all these years.. You and Chris can do an on the ice 3 or 5 day series to give us some fun! That way yall don't have to be away from your family and have some fun
This is amazing! In the parts of Sweden where I'm from we call them "Slom" and we also fry them with a quick dunk in flour and then batter. It's a delicassy here but we usually catch them when they come up the river with a special net with a long handle. Easy as it gets when you time it correctly! We also say they smell like cucumber but maybe that's not just us.
Hi, since I'm a huge slingshot fan I decided to watch some videos on CZcams. I stumbled upon your channel and I all subscribed right away then I watched several of your videos and liked them all. I advise you to test the Ebsone slingshot which is on the Yshoot site and I would really like you to test it it costs 70 € I am French I do not understand everything you say but I really appreciate your videos. With this slingshot, you can fire a rice at 10 meter, its French made
I am use to dipping for my smelt about waist deep and six feet off shore. Usually run from mid-night to dawn fill up a metal garbage can or six if they really thick. Freeze'em for next winter fish fry. That is a true Michigan spring tradition.
I know I’ve commented the same on a few videos but dang your hot sauce is delicious. I love the vinegary taste and it just adds so much to every meal you put it in
Just found your channel Zachary, and am I ever glad, I saw you on Oven's bushcraft and went looking, great channel and big thank you from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, can't wait to watch them all!
Hey Z, if the covid is over and you have a chance to visit Thailand, come and do catch and cook with me, I will teach you how to really cook man, Thai style, and you will change your eating forever... Big Fan here, Cheer!!!
Have you ever went slingshot fishing. I seen this guy on CZcams doing it. It really works it has a string on it to pull the fish in on it. That would be a crazy challenge to do.
I challenge you to make a ice shack out of the tote pontoons for smelt fishing ! That would be super cool if it broke through the ice it would just float and you can have it there all winter.......👍🏾👍🏾
