In the olden days, employees would live with their employers. When he is fired, he would pack up his belongings, wrapping them up in a big cloth that has checks (small squares) on them. When we fry the squid, we'd cut small squares on it so that it cooks faster. When the squid is cooked, it rolls up, looking like the big cloth package that the fired worker takes with him. So 炒鱿鱼 (fried squid) means getting fired and packing up your stuff to leave the boss' house.
